As some of us suspected. He just got remarried last summer so why not take a break?

That no one has responded suggests some are having a tough time letting go of their dreams.

Is that such a bad thing?

What a horrible season this is going to be for McCarthy.

Every single blunder, loss, and mistake will be magnified 10 fold with Payton breathing down his neck.

Literally every creditable media person seems to believe it's not a matter of if but when for the Cowboys and Payton.

McCarthy is in a crappy situation right now for sure.

This was arguably Payton’s most impressive season coaching, but his biggest headache. He was 9-7 with the storm, meaning they had to play in Dallas the first month, they probably lost more players to COVID. They had a lot of upheaval and Payton seemed to imply it was very draining, based on the quote I remember reading.

He had a TE playing QB and was still in the playoff hunt somehow.

He last won a super bowl two years before MM and has the same record in many ways. I don't get the hoopla, and I doubt MM gives a rats behind about it.

McCarthy is absolutely standing in Payton's shadow this season. Whether that is being cast by the fans, media, or the Cowboys' FO, it's going to be there and MM is standing firmly in it.

He had Winston at 14 TDs and 3 INTs bro. Even he could make Dak look better.

He’s probably the second best coach in the league, next to Bellichek. I think he’s been robbed more by the league than any other coach as well. That Rams PI was a joke. Bountygate and his suspension was way more damaging to the franchise than Spygate punishment.

If you can lock in Sean Payton, you do it. Forget anybody else.

Everyone all up on Payton over Mccarthy....Rodgers was helped by McCarthy to develop but Brees was already Brees prior to arriving in NO. Payton didn't make Brees.

Yeah, this has disaster written all over it. Jerry needs to get Payton ASAP or Fat Mike might not make it past midseason next year. Never thought i'd say this but I actually feel kinda bad for Fat Mike. He's a terrible HC but even he doesnt deserve this.

He's a horrible coach and I never wanted him, but you're right, he doesn't deserve to come in to work everyday knowing it's only a matter of time.

So I've read conflicting statements saying we would or would not have to give New Orleans compensation. What is the truth? Would we or wouldn't we?

Very true. Short of a SB appearance or maybe a NFCCG appearance, he's a lame duck.

I’m not 100% sure.

But I believe if he sits out and “retires” they could buy out the rest of his contract and he would not require compensation.

But there is no way to get him without compensation unless the Saints let him out of his deal, which they won’t.

If Dallas hires him at any point within the next three seasons, they will have to compensate them.

I think Payton just needs a year away from football and that works out fine since we would have to send NO compensation if we tried to land him for next season. So unless MM gets us to a super bowl next season, the road is paved for Payton in 2023.
