It was more than good enough to be a Super Bowl caliber defense.

The offense did in the playoffs but they were pretty good for most of the season but yah, I think it even underachieved a bit.

Ah the defense
In my humble opinion this was a bit of smoke and mirrors.
The total yards given up last time I researched was very similar to last year.
When are defense I believe was historically bad
What saved this defense was our two young stars Micah Parsons and Trayvon Diggs.
One could create havoc like Charles Haley and the other had the ball skills of deion Sanders.
That said the defense was no day at the beach couldn't stop the run and gave up huge chunk plays.
Those two young stars covered a multitude of sins for this defense.
Micah and Trayvon get a 10 rating.
The rest of the defense gets a 5
And Gregory gets a special award for being the stupidest player in a playoff game

The only thing the defense did real well is get takeaways. We gave up more 25+ yard plays than just about any team in the league. Our defense was ranked 19th overall and was 14th in sacks. Our front four doesn’t get near enough pressure on the QB. Our leading sacker was a part-time edge rusher/LB. We’re still struggling against the run and are getting manhandled upfront. We still struggle to make critical stops. The defense was certainly better than last years historically bad unit but still has a lot of room for improvement. My grade would be a 6.5 mostly due to the takeaways.

Pretty consistent with the occasional blip. They kept us in every game though, outside the first game of the year which was a shootout. Even in the playoff game the 49ers did a good job running the ball but second half we held our own. Kittle, Debo, Ayuke and Jennings had like a combined 8 catches for 130 yards.
I'd give them a 7. Definitely going to need to find some guys to replace the players leaving next year though.

like 8 or even 9 imo
they was not great and even just bad some time (give up big play, against the run, etc) but they gave the offense a chance to win almost every game if that side even come close to doing their job and live up to their pay
