Whether it is legit or not Mike McCarthy is now a lame duck with Payton available.

It’s going to hang over this franchises head until the day Sean Payton accepts another job.

This is awful for our 2022 season and I think will be bad for this franchise going forward.

Also, how on earth are we just now finding out about almost getting Payton in 2019.. Dallas media needs to do their job.

:hammer:

This is what you call being too in-bed with Jerry and the Cowboys. Local media have a tendency to do this compared to national media or media that don't have a local connection with the team or franchise.

And I agree with you. If McCarthy falls short of a NFC Championship next year, he's as good as dead man walking.

The sad part about this is it shows how dysfunctional we are as a franchise.

Another wasted year so exciting for us fans.

This franchise is doomed.
If McCarthy falters, he's gone.
But with Payton available after a year, what ransom is New Orleans/Gayle Benson going to hang over Jerry's head to acquire his services?
And Jerry will overpay just like he did for D.Law, Zeke and Dak.
We're screwed.

I disagree. He’s a coach with a good team and a second chance. It doesn’t matter what Peyton is doing. If Mike has a good year, better clock and game management, fewer penalties, gets Moore to be more balanced, and wins 1 or 2 playoff games, playing well and only losing to a better team, then Mike’s going nowhere. If Mike doesn’t produce a win in the playoffs next year, he’s gone anyway. It has nothing to do wit Sean Peyton if Jerry sticks with Mike now.

Do better, Mike gets another year.
Do worse, Mike gets replaced, regardless of who’s available.

Payton is going to step away for a year. And basically McCarthy has a year to make a deep run in the playoffs. Pressure certainly is on him. I have no problem with that.
I think that's called being in the hot seat. That was the original topic posted by the OP

I think the existence of Sean Payton on the periphery is a good thing. Competition brings out the best in the best. McCarthy was going to be under pressure this year, no matter what. The idea of Payton out there is the weeds adds a juicy level of drama to the situation. If the Cowboys go to the 2022 NFCC game, McCarthy will remain as HC. If they have a repeat of 2021 or worse, then and only then will it make sense for the Cowboys to commit the necessary assets it will take get Sean Payton.

I don't know how Payton's contract is structured, but it appears his rights are with the Saints for 3 years. They may not want to trade his rights to an NFC team. Is Jerry willing to step aside and let Payton take over football operations? That is 100% going to be necessary, which will likely mean some turnover in the coaching ranks. Will Kellen be part of the Payton's plan or a reason he ends up passing on the Cowboys?

It's comical to read this thread and see how many people don't know what a lame duck head coach means.

Calling McCarthy anorexic would be as accurate.
If you're asking ME, and clearly you aren't, it's a guy coaching on the last year of his contract.

Not one that's gonna keep cashing eight figures worth of Jerry checks after he is fired.

That buys the bon bon factory.

"Lame duck" means a coach on the way out. Not a coach coaching for his job the next season.

If he wins in 2022 he'll be the coach in 2023.

Non issue.
I agree. If McCarthy somehow rights the ship (minimum NFCCG appearance), there’s no reason Jerry wouldn’t retain him.

It's a guy coaching out his last year with no chance at staying. That's not McCarthy. If he wins in 2022 he'll be back in 2023.

This is just more fan rant.

The media is trying so hard to start drama in Dallas. We finish the the season 12-5 and all talk shows would do is dwell on the loses. We get a butt whipping from the 49ers that exposed are whole team but it’s MM fault we lost because of a possibility of a Hail Mary chance. I don’t think anyone can coach or play for the Cowboys under this intense scrutiny. Talking heads are roasting MM like he is the worst coach in the history of the league. They actually have segments saying the Joneses should fire him then keep Quinn.:omg::facepalm:

Wins what though? If Florio isn't lying then he needs to get to an NFC CG to get a hello, probably into the SB to have an argument, and probably win it to stay.

I dunno here, it comes down to semantics, but I'm looking at it from a MM perspective, and you're probably speaking from how the team views him point of view.

Yeah, the players all know he is probably gone and that limits his command of the locker room.

I agree there.

But Jerry takes that away from every HC from minute one just by being him.

The difference is negligible.

I disagree about being a lame duck for 2 reasons:

1. His future in Dallas can still be affected (and perpetuated) by the results of next season.
2. Its far from certain Payton would come to Dallas anyway knowing that he would be stuck with an owner/GM who has his nose in the middle of what should be the business of the head coach

That said, sure the idea of Peyton could loom over his head until (if) Payton takes another job, but that isn't the same as being a lame duck who already knows his job is coming to an end.
