What Restructures Need to Occur to Sign Big Free Agents?

I think the majority of this is true, but I don't think Jerry has or will give up on Dak until the end of his deal or even later.

I definitely agree with you that 2022 should be treated as a 'get right' year when it comes to contracts and the cap. Make the tough decisions and trade or release the bad contracts.

For sure. JJ will never quit Dak lol… JJ is the elephant in the room and the true reason why this club is as dysfunctional as it is.

The list above is merely the first steps to even attempting legitimate contention of a title. We will never get there because JJ lives in denial and delusion that we are actually contenders right now… therefore why make macro changes at all?

Which is why he can trot out on 105.3 and puff out his chest and tell the fanbase to feel good about MM, DQ, and KM returning. Status quo and continuity because “we are soooo close!!”

He can sell it because he actually believes it himself.

Greg Hardy was one of the last ones I can remember. He didn’t cost us a lot of money due to his off the field issues. The last big free agent we broke the bank for was Brandon Carr who never lived up to his contract.
Hard to do that when you are a #2 CB asked to be the #1. But he took the money.

Overpaying free agents doesn’t work out for most teams. A lot of these players are playing for a big free agent contract. Once some of them get their money they lose motivation and never play as well for their second team as they did their original team. This is why the Cowboys focus more on the mid to lower tier free agents. A lot of times you can benefit by signing a free agent to a one-year prove it deal.

The man who commands 22% of the teams salary cap has to answer that question
It's a team effort with the exception when it pertains to the CASH.......Mr.75 million has proved he isn't worth 7.50 $:omg:

they may restructure but it won't be in the pursuit of "big" free-agents...but home grown or to sign someone to an extension.

Agree.......Dak's contract allows him to become a free agent after the 2023 season? I think we'll start getting some little before that......remember how many times they restructured Aikman and Romo deals additional years. We'll see if they restructure Dak in the next couple of years.......IF they don't, I think you have your answer.

Not many fans are aware but the team is already scheduled to pay Dak $13 million-plus for 2025, when he won't even be under contract. But yea, let's "restructure" and push even more money to a year when we don't even have him under contract...

I'd be SHOCKED if the trigger wasn't already discussed when they negotiated the deal. If I'm Dak, I'd pull that trigger every year - turn that base salary into HUGE BONUSES each year - because, if he doesn't improve, this is it for his BIG $$$ days.

he’s got to do what’s best for him…..

everyone is different. On a personal note, I’ve lived long enough that if I’ve made 50 million a year minimum in endorsements and insurance, like Dak has since his 2nd year, I would be looking toward my legacy in my profession rather than lumping more tens of millions over the existing tens of millions. A few million restructured wouldn’t put me back in the bread line

I also don’t have a Tad or entourage that I have to make a living for …..so there’s that.

He will be here beyond the current deal.

This may be more difficult than the Garrett breakup.

I guess the long term plan is to have Payton develop the next Romo.

These guys are pretty easy to figure out.

What's so sad is they have such a knack for getting it wrong.

According to overthecap, the top 5 players (from a savings perspective) for restructures would be:

Prescott ($15.2M)
Lawrence ($11.9M)
Cooper ($12.6M)
Elliott ($9.1M)
Smith ($8.3M)

Not suggesting that they will or even should restructure these deals. Just presenting info from the following site:

https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/dallas-cowboys/

I agree they have the right to maintain status quo……they also right to retire without sniffing the Super Bowl as well……decisions, decisions…….the problems some people have

I honestly didn't know a team could push dead money beyond the length of the contract.

Dak and Tank would need to take massive pay cuts. And we’d still have to cut Cooper. And we’d have to forego signing some of our own guys like Schultz, Gallup and Kearse.

What happens if DeMarcus Lawrence is restructured? The team looks stuck with him. The team also looks stuck with La'el Collins. What would a restructure for him look like? Also Zack Martin? The team is not stuck with him but restructuring him seems to make sense.

Void years. Just wait till they restructure him again and we have dead cap in 2025 and 2026 for accounting purposes

Yeah, it's the newest trend. Teams have found even bigger and more egregious ways to kick the can down the road. Teams will eventually hit the point of no return where they will effectively have to punt on a season or more just to get their cap in order. The 2022 Saints are a great example and there's no doubt in my mind that that played a significant factor in Sean Payton's decision to step down.

Yea but apparently his gf isn't a super model like Tom Brady's wife and plus he has a human anchor in the form of Tad he needs to support.

Brady has to pay for all of that HGH and carry the bill for that phony doctor not to mention the fake hair, plastic surgery, hair dye, Botox, and whatever else he is doing that lets him pretend he is still 25.
