CowboysZone ULTIMATE Fan
I'm born and raised in Ohio, still live here, but I spent summers in Texas with my aunt in the 70s, which is how I came to know the Dallas Cowboys and become a fan of the team.

But as I sit here now, in 2022, this team is barely recognizable. The Cowboys of the 70s were innovators, doing things before others do them, regularly competing for titles and sometimes winning them.

What is this team now? An egofest for the owner and his children. Win, lose, it doesn't matter. The money rolls in and how the team operates does not change. Sure, they wear the same uniforms (thank marketing), but this team has become an internet meme. Do you really think Jerry & Stephen, after 26 years of failure, are going to strike gold? It's become a laughingstock outside of its own fan base.

I noticed how much things changed for me this postseason. Not only did I bet on the 49ers, previously unheard of, I wasn't the least bit surprised that I won that bet. The Cowboys are all hype, lacking substance. Thinking Jerry and Son are going to turn it into substance is a fool's errand - if they could they would've done it by now.

So the question becomes, why bother? Is "loyalty" until death - to an entity that doesn't even know you exist - a source of pride, or foolishness? I can't answer for anyone else, but I decided a decade ago it would be foolish to keep giving my money to this team, so I stopped doing it.

Leadership did not change (I didn't expect it would), and the results haven't changed either. I'll still follow the team out of habit, but thinking this joke of an organization is actually going to win anything...no thanks.

The Arlington Jonesboys will continue to live off the Dallas Cowboys name, but they won't accomplish anything other than making money off diehards who are still in love with the name. The Cowboys have 5 SB trophies, and they'll still have 5 when I die as long as they remain a Jones family business.

Go ahead, talk about this free agent or this coach - it doesn't matter, and deep down you know it. It's all false hope, rooting for a brand we all loved but that exists no more.

For us older fans who remember what the Star represented today's reality is sad indeed.
It will get worse before it gets better.........:(

@Jake You’re a good loyal fan and to put it so eloquently this team has you by the boo-boos as they do all of us otherwise why would any of us be here. If and when the time comes that they win a championship it will be that much sweeter. So many bandwagon fans these days it’s good to know there are still a ton of us loyalists out there. Hell look at @Aerolithe_Lion how long he had to wait for a championship(not a shot but a respectful comment on your loyalty to your team and what it means to be a good fan).

It's the Dallas Jones Family Sport Entertainment Franchise.

It's about merchandising, marketing, and money.

Gridiron greatness is secondary.

Most of us "suffer" from the obsession /love/hate relationship we have with "Our Cowboys"... it's like the relationship we have with that significant other where we want it to be like the way "it used to be" (back in the day... the good Ol' days)... we know they won't change but we still hold out hope for change for the better........... we just keep hanging on hoping and dreaming....:)

The good news and reality is the Cowboys are just an NFL football team that we happen to like, root for, and follow.... and at the end of the day there are more important things in life like family and loved ones so once we put it into perspective it becomes what it should always be = Entertainment! ;)

I referred to myself as "stupid" because I know I'll stick around despite having no faith in the people running the show, and disliking how they've changed the organization. I don't think there's anything special about being loyal to something that doesn't know you exist, though. In fact, it almost makes me question my sanity. Why do we do it?

Then I remember "fan" is short for fanatic. Our reasons for following aren't based on logic. It's purely an emotional attachment we could choose to break at any time, yet find it very difficult to actually do it. Instead we complain about Jerry or whatever player or coach we think stinks, and keep hanging with them anyway. It's nuts.

I was a diehard Spurs fans, when the Admiral retired I lost interest. I have been a Mavs fan ever since. Nothing says you have to stay.

…wasn’t the “Admiral”, Ross Perots running mate in the 92 presidential elections?

When ownership puts themselves, and their children, in charge of personnel they own the results. Jerry only did that because he hated seeing the head coach - someone he hired - getting credit for Super Bowls.

Most sane people would be fine with the person YOU HIRED getting credit for your Super Bowls, but (obviously) Jerry's ego couldn't handle it.

He needs the "credit", which is why I created this thread for the silly, old man.
Is that why Barry Switzer said “we did it our way, Jerry” after the Steelers SB win?

Only they didn't really do it their way. The rode on the backs of Jimmy's future hall of famers, Switzer getting a SB ring in spite of himself.

Once those guys were gone, we've seen how Jerry's "way" goes. It goes nowhere, but he's having fun with his kids and the money keeps rolling in, so he'll keep doing it.

But I’m asking if that’s the REASON he said that quote.

that is it exactly !
The only thing that bothers jerry is not being able to get past div round, in all these years.
Thats why I now enjoy seeing his team lose in playoffs.

I have been a cowboy fan and lived in the Philadelphia area all my life. Started religiously following the cowboys the year they lost to the colts in the super bowl remember Bob Lilly throwing his helmet which was pretty big back then.

I am a survivor of many battles that took place at the old veterans stadium against the eagles and I don't mean the battles that the cowboys fought against them as it was a very dangerous place to be a cowboys fan.

Like Jake the team s of the '70s hold a special place in my heart and are the reason I still watch the cowboys today.

It really can't be put into words what Roger Staubach, Tom Landry and the rest of those iconic cowboys of that era did for the game of football and the fans privileged enough to be able to see them in the moment.

Those teams gave me a lifetime of football enjoyment and a loyalty that I am unable to shake even though my better judgment tells me I am a fool to continue.

Sadly I have adjusted my expectations to making the playoffs being my super bowl for this cowboys team. Unfortunately I still down deep want more and have horrible difficulty controlling my frustration when I see what could have been.

Occasionally there are these little glimmers of hope like when Dak and Zeke broke into the league and are offensive line was a total powerhouse. But we never have the coaching or the defense or the special teams to take things to the next level we are always missing something.

I hate to blame Jerry but he is the common denominator in all this.
I don't want to find another team The cowboys provide us with some very good football to watch at times so I will keep my expectations conservative and stay the course
