We need to stop overrating the offensive talent here

It has been said for far too long that the Cowboys have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL. It’s especially been said by Jerry and Stephen. I’m not here to say that this team is not talented. We certainly have some talent.

But I’m of the opinion that talent should be measured by what it accomplishes for your team. Whatever level of talent we have had the last 5 years has translated into 1 wild card playoff win under two different coaching staffs. TALENT SHOULD BE MEASURED BY THE RESULTS IT GIVES. If all we get is an occasional divisional “title” is that great?

We fans love our team and our players. But sometimes we have to take off the fan glasses and see things as they really are.

To avoid having a super long post, here are just some examples on offense of overrated talent here:
  • WR’S and TE’s one of the best groups in the NFL? Let’s tap the brakes.
    • Amari Cooper- he’s certainly a talented receiver. And he’s paid like it. But the last 9 games of the season he avg about 45 yds per game. Why do we think paying Cooper all that money “is worth it”? What did it translate to? He’s good but he’s not consistent to pay him top dollar IMO.
    • Cedee Lamb had a statistically good year last year, but his drops are nearly league leading. He gets lazy at times and had several lapses in focus in the playoff game against the niners that cost us dearly. He needs to improve a lot to be called “great”.
    • Michael Gallup missed most of the season with an injury and was re-injured at the end of the season. I love Gallup, but he wasn’t there for most of the season. Probably gone anyway.
    • Dalton Schultz- a good but not great TE who will probably command more in FA than we can pay. Blake Jarwin? Unless we’re playing the giants, he’s a spare.
  • OL- too many TV people and PFF people act like this is a top 5 OL. It isn’t.
    • Tyron Smith- the once greatest player on this team has turned into a constant injury waiting to happen. He’s missed a whopping 32 games the last 5 seasons, and hasn’t played a full season since 2015. We need to stop pretending this is working.
    • Tyler Biadz- gets manhandled on a regular basis. Thankfully, Connor “Holding” Williams will be gone next year. But Biadz either needs more help if he’s going stay at C.
    • La’El Collins- like Smith has missed a ton of games- some to injury some to his own stupidity. But he’s not been that great at RT. Maybe he could play LG again as he did back in 2016. But he either needs to get better or we say adios.
    • Zack Martin is still great. But he alone doesn’t make this a great OL.
  • RB and QB-
    • Zeke Elliott- the highest paid RB in the league is killing the cap, barely producing any kind of reliable yardage and just looks old and slow. Tony Pollard should have had more snaps last year but the Jones family sees him as a family member not a football player on their team. He needs to be released.
    • Dak- I’m not a Dak “hater”. I still think he’s capable of leading this team to a SB. Lots of QBs with less talent have already done it. But he’s never going to be a “carry the team on his back” kind of QB.
Bottom line Cowboys fans: This offense’s talent is seriously overrated. We need to seriously upgrade the OL, shave some cap space off the WR and RB positions and draft some guys that can help immediately. Dak’s contract will be restructured.

Rodgers talent hasn’t been enough in GB. Last year Brady was terrible in the NFC championship game, throwing 3 pics. His defense bailed him out. Mahomes couldn’t get it done against the Cincy D in the second half last Sun.

My point is, even GREAT QBs can’t do it alone.

The only difference is great QB’s can take their team further while it’s not always enough without more support.

And why the Elite QB’s are usually perineal contenders while not winning it all.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence the Brady’s, Rodgers and Mahomes for example are usually in the conversation making deeper runs more often than not.

And that’s the difference with these teams fielding great QB’s. They are never part of the conversation placing any blame.

Just like us in our glory years. I don’t recall ever holding Roger or Troy responsible for coming up short.

Dak is good definitely top 10 but closer to 10 than 5
EE should of never been given that contract and should be cut as soon as possible. I'd draft another RB and EE can be the highest 3rd string player in history.
Cooper is good I was against the trade but have really come to like him but over paid not sure can afford him. CeeDee is good but I like him in the slot more than outside.
TE Schultz is average but I'd like to see a game changer like Kelce or Kittle especially since I think Dak is better at getting balls to his Slot WR and TE than his outside WR.
O-LINE. Smith is still great when healthy I just don't know if he can ever play close to a full season ever again. Martin best player on the team still. L Collins needs to move to guard I never thought he was a good fit at Tackle. Center is a huge hole. Really probably need 3 good O-linemen this off season. I think O-line is most important thing on this team for there to be success it has to be great

Those QB's are w/ smarter orgs who built the team around them to fit their skillsets. Put them on a team where that isn't the case, and they would not do nearly as well. For instance, look at Stafford.

Brady didn't pick a crapp team to go to. TB was already stacked, and they then stacked the OL w/ Wirfs in the 1st. And acquired Gronk.
Absolute truth. Brady didn’t carry TB. He picked a team that would best support his skills.

This is a very good post.

Our talent on offense is severely overrated, IMO.

Everything would look better with a rb who could actually move. It cannot be understated how Zeke has killed our offense two years in a row. I was for cutting him no matter the cost but I then actually went and looked at the cost and we are stuck with him for next year. Just a horrible horrible contract that i was never for and can't believe NFL people didn't see this coming.

Our OL is overted but I don't think it is as bad as it is made out to be. I feel like even the "Great Wall Of Dallas" line could not have gotten much more out of Zeke this year.

Our Wrs are overated. Love coop but he was moping this year and didn't run the great routes that we have come to expect form him. I have hypothesized the owner coming out publicly slamming him over covid was when he really put it in neutral. Agree on your Ceedee analysis as well.

Wilson was our best WR this year all around, that is a sad statement.

ZEKE makes us pass the ball so much it's the only way to move the ball

Excellent post. Cooper simply performed average, Ceedee need more strength. OLine and DLines need to be a priority for this team to be successful.

BH, I agreed with everything you said, except for Dak. I keep hearing so many say that Dak does not have the potential to carry this team. Well, what do you call a QB who has passed for the most 400+ yard games (9) since 2016 throughout the whole NFL?

Great post BobHaze.....only thing i personally disagree is about Dak....i do not believe he has the tools to take the Cowboys to the SB...maybe if the Cowboys would be the dominant juggernaut and head and shoulders better than anyone else, maybe......but that is not a realistic scenario in this day and age. No team is that dominant or can be that dominant the way the league is set up. A QB has to be able to carry the team or even make plays especially in the post season to win games. And i mean win games against very good teams. He has not shown that and i doubt he has it in him.

I agree with this entire post; especially about the receivers. Lamb has the talent to be the #1 target but his indifferent route running and concentration lapses are troubling. It also needs to be recalled that Dak threw for 375 yards on Thanksgiving with both Lamb and Cooper out. The drop off from them to Cedrick Wilson, Gallup, and Noah Brown may not be as steep as we think.

This is a really good point. It's not like we have Deebo on this team.

Overrating leads to overpaying in Dallas. And overpaying leads to CAP problems and mediocre performance.

When a couple of dudes put themselves in charge of players and coaches, and love their own choices, you don't get objective assessments of those choices.

"We like our guys". Of course you, because you chose them. Which makes you the last people who should be deciding which players to invest in long term.

Truly shocking that this organizational model has produced minimal success in a quarter century.

“We like our guys” is ok if you’re running a fraternity. If you’re trying to win an NFL championship, it’s a disaster. Successful GMs are accountable for results. Therefore the only thing they fall in love with is winning. It’s the only way they keep their jobs.

In Dallas, you can be a GM for life if you can buy the team or you have matching DNA. “We like our guys” is a very honest statement coming from the Jones cartel. And it’s one of the main reasons we’re watching another SB without the Cowboys playing in it.

Bingo. The Bucs were 7-9 the year before Brady despite Winston having 30+ turnovers. That they won 7 games speaks to the rest of the talent.

Put Brady in Detroit the last 2 years and the myth that a QB "carries" a team would've been put to rest. Of course, he was too smart to go there.

We will need to hit the UDFA pile hard and come away with a few more of these future saviors...
