The Rams are a model for the Cowboys

"Mortgaging the future" is code for stupidly overpaying in a trade. All that would accomplish is the Cowboys wouldn't win now, and then they'd be handicapped from winning later.

There is no trade that would fix the Cowboys. There is no head coach who will succeed. There is no free agent who is the missing piece.

Nothing will change until the Jones Family's connection to the football roster ends at dollars and cents. Until then, this franchise will continue to flounder and fail.

0 for 26.

Hopefully Jethro will pay attention to how they turned this around by making bold moves in FA and blockbuster trades not satisfied with just a playoff team.

They took a chance mortgaging the future to win now. This is definitely a model our owner could follow . And could be the best path to bringing in more talent to get over the hump, now.
Gonna laugh in 5 years when this team is picking in the top 5....this is a horrible business model.

There's no reason for Dallas to not be all in right now. Look around at the NFC. Even if Rodgers stays in GB or goes to SF, Dallas is at worst the 3rd best team in the conference. There's a golden window in the NFC right now, while the AFC has four generational QBs ready to kill each other for the next 10 years.

Right , with Brady gone and if Rodgers moves on now all that should be left in our way or ahead of us in conference is teams in NFC West. Unless of course if other teams improve which is possible of course

Our roster building hasn’t been sound enough. Our problems lie in the core weaknesses of our roster building. Along with culture .

The Rams choices do carry more risk but the rewards can certainly warrant.

My bigger point is that if our current process isn’t achieving our goals what do we have to lose . I’m surprised our ownership wouldn’t entertain as such. It seems right up his alley .

I’m not saying we should do this now but at some point we might consider.

It used to be right up his alley if you can remember. It didn’t work out. It usually doesn’t work out, even if it worked out this once for the rams. I think people need to be less reactionary and evaluate more closely what is actually happening. The cowboys have not had the same philosophies over the last 25 years of failure. It has changed and changed a lot. In my opinion it has changed for the better since the days of Joey Galloway and Roy Williams. They have changed to focus on the draft, be frugal in free agency and be careful with trades. It’s been a lot better since in my opinion. The roster is good. Can it be better? Yes. I think they can be a little more bold in free agency at times, take a few more risks, but there is no reason to do a 180 here. They are not that far away, even if people don’t want to hear that after this years’ disappointment.

Would he do it for a Super Bowl?

No because now it would reinforce his failure as GM , his process ....and everyone would know for sure he should have done this long ago. That is why he keeps banging his head on the wall, figures he may get lucky and crack it. :banghead:

All we can do is watch, til his head splits open.

They’ll be I. Trouble in two years though. You can be 90% draft, 10% free agency. For example, if we have everyone we drafted but ended up signing a rodgers, we win the super bowl without cap trouble. It’s just an example.

The Rams are a model for the Cowboys.....

I'm looking at the words as if I would never EVER imagine them being placed in this order.

You would just have to look at the Ram's franchise history to understand just how ironically twisted they seem to me.

I mean absolutely no disrespect to the OP and I understand that his title is in context to this season but I just can't help thinking about the events of the past and aligning them with this title.

During the 70's, while the Cowboys were going to the conference championship game just about every season while going to Super Bowls every other season, the Rams had built some of the most powerful teams in NFL history......if we are talking strictly about the regular season.

A few years back I took every team's seasons from 1970 to the present. I created a score of each team's seasons. The won/loss records were ranked and counted for 50% of the score. They were ranked in the five categories of Points scored, Yardage, Opponent points scored, Opponent yardage, and turnover differential. Each of those categories counted 10% for a total of the other 50% of the score. I then ranked them according to that score to see which were the best and worse seasons in NFL history. Naturally the Dolphin's undefeated season in the 70's ranked #1.

Keep in mind, the data was taken only from the regular season. Their playoff results were not a part of the score. Part of this was I wanted o see how many of the best team for individual seasons actually won the Super Bowl

Apologies for the long winded explanation and it may seem a deviation from the subject matter, but it isn't.

Two of the top ten teams in NFL history belonged to the Rams in the 70's. What makes this so surprising was their almost immediate exit from the playoffs. They perfected the art of the playoff choke.

In 1973 the 12-2 Rams were #1 in offense, both points and yardage. They were #1 in the defensive category of yardage, #4 in opponent points. They were #1 in turnover differential.

They lost in the 1st round of the playoffs....to Roger and the Dallas Cowboys.

By the way, one of the coaches on the Rams team, their defensive backfield coach, was a guy named Dick Vermeil.

In 1975, the 12-2 Rams had the #1 defense and 10th ranked offense. They were confident going into the NFC championship game. Their opponent had barely won their first playoff game the previous week with a desperation bomb during the last seconds of the game. Besides many of their positions were manned by the 12 rookies on their team........Rams 7 Cowboys 37.

Apparently this current Cowboys team has managed to follow that particular model.

And then if you want to consider the former Rams owner has his family's involvement in the franchise, it gets macabre.

Rosenbloom was a highly successful businessman. He had originally owned the Colts and them swapped even up with the owner of the Rams. His son played a central role in the team's management and it was assumed that his son would inherit ownership.

However, in his will, he had given 70% of the ownership to his 2nd wife, Georgia Frontiere, for tax purposes. It was understood that she would then return ownership to her stepson. However, when her husband drowned mysteriously in a swimming accident, she reneged and this led to bitter court battles that she eventually won.

Flamboyant ownership.....Yep, when it comes to being a model for the Cowboys, they are way ahead of that.

We aren't, but we desperately need a competent GM to evaluate talent and make decisions.

The Cowboys have one already in McClay.

The problem is he doesn't have the final say because as we all know everything goes through the Jones gang.

Not just the Rams, but what about Cinci? The Bengals starting defense are a majority free agent pickups. And they played lights out tonight. Most were not drafted by them.
Let’s be honest here, we all know Jerruh & Stephen are bad at free agency. Would you trust them to be able to fill the holes through FA? Absolutely not.

If the "model" includes 3 red zone penalties on your opponent on your game-winning drive - when that team had 2 penalties in 3 and a half quarters - then sign me up.

The Cowboys could follow the Ram model, but they still wouldn't get the calls like the Rams did in the SB....

Credit for pulling this off but I am still not a big fan of this all or nothing model.

They could have easily lost this game and have been f***ed for a long time
