I’d think if you had to choose you’d rather have the jacket but if you have both the rings are probably sweeter.

Individual recognition is immortality enshrined forever. We never forget the few inducted . But the rings are a team effort and without the jacket many are forgotten .

1962 World Rankings

1.......................................Jerry Tarr (US)
2..................................Hayes Jones (US)
3.............................Blaine Lindgren (US)
4....... Anatoliy Mikhailov (Soviet Union)
5...........................Fran Washington (US)
6..................Giovanni Cornacchia (Italy)
7.......................Brian Polkinghorne (US)
8.................................... Don Styron (US)
9.....................................Mel Renfro (US) ^*******
10............................... Russ Rogers (US

At that seasons NCAA's Mel took second to Tarr (as we can see top ranked) in the hurdles and third in the long jump (Paul Warfield taking second). He along with Tarr, Mike Gaetcher and the great Canadian Harry Jerome would run a world record 4x1 relay, unusual for a college team to accomplish that.(not at the NCAA's)

Renfro a stud running back while at Oregon.

Not sure why the switch to DB, he was a good RB with over 1500 yards and a 5.7 average in three seasons.

Mel Renfro
School: Oregon

Position: RB

Early on they had him and Bob Hayes back to return kickoffs. He scored on two KO returns and a punt return. 10 time pro bowler.

I was fortunate enough to watch him play for Oregon at memorial stadium in Austin when they played the Longhorns a looonng time ago. I was a kid, and got to watch some memorable games in the “knot hole” section of memorial stadium (the end zone for .50 cents!)
