The trade for Amari in 2018 completely turned that season around. We wouldn’t have made the playoffs without him. He made a number of clutch catches and contributed to several wins. Fans are trying to minimize losing him but we’re going to feel it. If anything he was underrated here.

Once they started playing him physical and double teaming him he seems to fall off and get inside his own head.

Yep. All of the good teams have one or more elite receivers. We have to replace Amari or the offense will struggle. And it’s not an issue exclusive to Dak either. Brady couldn’t sniff the end zone when Evans and Godwin got hurt and the Cards couldn’t win a game without Hopkins. It’s today’s NFL which is have elite WRs or lose.

The Cowboys better hope Cooper doesn’t end up in the NFC East. If he ends up in Green Bay and Rodgers and Davante Adams return the Packers are my Super Bowl pick. Gallup is coming off an ACL and has had injury issues. It usually takes two years for a receiver to return form after an ACL. He has trouble staying healthy and both he and Lamb have had issues with drops. If the Cowboys lose two key starters the window that was wide open this past season will be slammed shut going into the 2022 season.

His numbers make it crystal clear. I still can’t believe he had less YAC last year than Dalton Schultz, Cedric Wilson and Tony Pollard. He avg a little over 12 yds per reception the last two seasons. That’s possession receiver numbers not star #1 receiver numbers.

He’s a great route runner which makes him very valuable. But he’s not a big play threat every down like about 20 other receivers in this league. This team needs more than he can give.

Again, Coop is a very good receiver. At this point in his career, I see him as a really good possession receiver. Not a $20 mil a year star like he was being counted on to be.
Hard to get YAC when Running the comeback route, or sideline out.

You can easily make a case that a TE and slot WR are more important in this offense than the outside WRs. One of the reasons why Lamb's production and targets are up when he is there. Getting the running game back is also a higher priority than Cooper in my opinion.

Prior to the Amari trade, they didn't have one single WR worth a darn on the roster that isn't the case now with Gallup, Lamb, and probably Wilson.

we will see but my assessment is that we are going to struggle on offense and in the passing game and WRs will struggle to get open but hope I’m wrong

Answer to the question, how many draft picks have we wasted in WR trades under Jerry? The answer is embarrassing:
  • For Joey Galloway in 2000: two 1st round picks.
  • For Roy Williams in 2008: a 1st, 3rd and 6th round pick.
  • For Amari Cooper in 2018: one 1st round pick.
  • For a grand total of…wait for it…four 1st round picks, a 3rd and 6th round pick.
Cooper got you to 2 playoff seasons. The others were bums...Galloway no Pro Bowls before the trade and Roy Williams would have been cut by a team that finished 0-16. Typical Jerry Dumbo GM Jones personnel decisions.

THIS IS NOT A HATE AMARI COOPER THREAD. I like Cooper. But I also think it was a smart move for the Cowboys, both for obvious cap reasons and the fact that he was overrated here.

Now that I have that out of the way, let us count the reasons why Cooper’s release could be a good thing:
  • Amari Cooper is a very good receiver. He’s an excellent route runner. BUT- he is not a great 3rd down receiver (when you need a 3rd down conversion)
    • In 2021, Cooper was 26th in the league in 3rd down receptions for a first down. For $20 mil a season, that’s not great. (Btw- Cedee Lamb was 16th)
  • He’s not as much of a big play guy as he used to be- In YAC yardage, Cooper was way below avg- GET THIS- Dalton Schultz, Cedric Wilson and Tony Pollard all had better YAC numbers than Coop in 2021.
    • Cooper has never been that great in YAC numbers in his career. He’s really more of a possession receiver which makes both his price tag and his lack of big 3rd down plays a problem.
    • His last two seasons, he’s only averaging about 12 yards per reception. Again, more of a possession receiver than a big play receiver.
  • He has tended to disappear in the bigger games when your big play receiver is MOST needed. Not all big games. He did have some big games. But not enough to make him a star. Here are some examples:
    • In both playoff losses Cooper played in, (2018, 2021) he averaged less than 70 yards per game.
    • In 2019’s most critical game that decided the NFC East vs Filly, Cooper had 4 receptions for 24 yds and famously stood on the sidelines in the last drive.
    • Another critical game in 2019, vs NE on the road, Coop got shut out with zero catches. (Randall Cobb and Gallup had 86 and 55 yds that day)
    • In that terrible loss against Arizona last year that cost us the #2 seed, Coop had 3 catches for 18 yds, despite 8 targets and two drops.
I’m not here to bash Amari Cooper. He’s a very good receiver. But Cowboys fans, let’s be honest. Is he a top 20 receiver in this league? NO. Not in receptions, YAC, 3rd down conversions…etc, etc. We cannot pay a WR $20 mil a season with that kind of return.

Will we miss Cooper? Maybe some. But the cap savings could provide more help at other positions without losing much on offense.

In my book letting him go is the right move.
Coop isn't overrated, he just needs a QB who will throw him the ball. The BOYS overrated, underachieving QB the TEN TOE MEDIOCRE SLOTH formally known as DAK PRESCOT who is a lame *** frog gigger who only throws to his receivers when he's looking to put up elite numbers against TOADS!!!!!!

I don’t know if I agree with you here. The offense was hopeless before he came here and he instantly turned it around. He has had a disappointing season but I don’t think he’s been overrated on the whole here. If anything I think he’s been underrated. The biggest issue I have is that they don’t seem to have any plan to replace him and that is going to spell disaster in my opinion.

If Gallup recovers in time for the season opener we should be fine with the trio of Lamb, Gallup and Wilson + a receiving TE.
well looks like wilson may not be here lol, and gallup, there is no way for him to be back at his previous level by Sept.

I said the same about dak last year, that he could not be as good and the season would wear him out, and it did.
That was one reason for the calf injury, and the ensuing slump.

Being able to play and being in football shape are 2 different things.

You realize the Cowboys philosophy is to spread the ball around right? They live and die by this rule!! Mike, KM, and Dak say it every chance they get. WTBS, we will never see dominate numbers from our players until the system changes.

Colossal waste of a first round pick at this point. Keep cooper he obviously makes Dak better
