Buck gets a lot of hate but I enjoy he and Troy’s broadcasts and hope they are together at ESPN.

Same. Troy & Joe are the best duo doing NFL games. Romo’s a hack and Nance is too busy thinking about his wine. Greg Olsen is good and I can see him moving up to the A Team.

The Gifford Cosell Meredith MNF team was lightning in a bottle, generational. We'll never see that again, just like Pat Summerall and Madden. I looked forward to seeing them. Their last year at CBS (1993), I read that Madden made $2.5 million and Summerall $1.5 mil. The network commentators and play by play guys now couldnt hold Pat's and Madden's jock straps.

Michaels and Madden was pretty good too. I think they were together for like 8 or 9 years.

But the MNF crew in the 80s-90s with Gifford, Michaels, and Dierdorf was great

The ESPN crew with Mike Patrick/Joe Theisman/Paul McGuire from like 97-05 was pretty good too and I never liked McGuire before that.

NBC had Dick Emberg and Merlin Olsen which was a great pairing for nearly 15 years I think. Summerall and Madden and Buck and Aikman are probably the only two that did it for over 20 years together on national broadcasts anyway. I'm sure there's some radio pairings that did that.

Greg Olsen is ultra generic and adds nothing to any broadcast he's on. I guess you can guarantee he won't be memorable in a bad way. Aikman gets a lot of hate for his calls at times. That won't be a problem with someone like Olsen I guess.

Would love Gruden back. Never been a huge fan of the Troy/Buck team.

Troy isn’t worth that much money. No one tuned into Fox to watch Troy’s commentary. They’re already paying Buck obscene money as well so I’m sure their budget is maxed.

How CBS can afford to pay Romo and Nantz 30 million per year combined is beyond me. They must pay the rest of their talent peanuts.
FOX pays 2.2 billion annually for the NFC Sunday broadcast rights.
CBS pays 2.1 billion for the AFC.
Nantz & Romo's combined salaries = 1.4% or what CBS pays the league.
The advertising revenue the networks get for putting on the games make it happen.

The Monday night game is not scheduled as a marquee game by the League, so why does ESPN think people will treat it as such? I like Troy, he will be wasted there doing Dolphins vs Falcons or whatever forgettable matchup is there most weeks.

There has only been one ex HC make it as a color analyst and that was because of his personality. Payton does not have that, not even close.
Hank Stram....

Dick Vermeil worked for CBS and ABC for a combined 14 years.

Fox pretty much always had either Buck or Summerall as the lead announcer for the most part. I guess the top guy will be Burkhardt and Greg Olsen. I see a lot of people like Olsen but he's so bland and forgettable and indistinguishable from Daryl Johnston or Mark Schlereth or anyone else there. I don't see why he gets the love. Aqib Talib is the only guy on Fox with any potential as a color commentator.
I guess I'm in the minority here, but Daryl Johnston is one of my favorites. And I don't see Olsen nor Daryl as bland. But, what the heck do I know. o_O

Troy adds absolutely nothing to a broadcast.

In fact, almost no color analyst does. Nobody tunes in to hear their opinions, and millions of people are capable of explaining a trap block or a dig route.

The fact that any of them make more than $100K a year is dumbfounding to me.

I agree, at least you can listen to them. The guys they had on ESPN last season were brutal, in fact since gruden left ESPN the broadcast has been brutal. I hate having games on ESPN based solely on the commentators, which is sad. If Aikman and Buck take over at least it will be tolerable.

Not as much "how" to me as "why"?

I have never watched any football game because of the broadcast team but I have turned the sound off on some of them.

MNF will never recapture what they had with Gifford-Meredith-Cosell, the Dennis Miller experiment failed and these last two MNF broadcast teams were just bad.

ESPN is hoping by adding Aikman they accomplish two things, rekindle interest in MNF but just as importantly, influence the scheduling of games. He is a high profile name and if they pair him right, they could affect the schedule. Moving TNF to a streamer opens up some scheduling I think.
Maybe having better matchups will help?

I think they look at it like hire him and they will come and the TNF game is moving to Amazon so they don't have to reward Fox for taking that over.

ESPN is showing the NFL that they're making the investment so they deserve a better lineup. And if Michaels leaves SNF, how does that affect the scheduling?

What the NFL knows is that cable nets and steamers cannot make the same money and the promotional value for Amazon is not like the nets so if ESPN is willing to go top shelf on the team and not a recycled group already under contract, they will reward that. And I think they will. It is not good for MNF to lose any more steam for the league.

Griese and Riddick fighting for mic time was unlistenable and I could hear the tension. Levy was getting ready to ref the fight.

I know Payton and Eli have their own ESPN broadcast during the games, but ESPN should have just given them the main broadcast. At least they're entertaining. And some of their guests are hilarious. Like the time they had Kevin Hart!! LOL

They pay billions for tv rights to the games. The announcers are a big part of the show. Particularly Romo.
