The fan anger and frustration this off-season as the Jones circus adds yet another ring to the show is palpable. After another frustrating end to what seemed like a promising season, the NFL’s most nepotistic front office shows its capable of going even lower this year.

By now we all know the Jones sales “process”-
  1. Overrate their own talent, then overpaying its perceived “stars”.
  2. Use the “we can’t afford top free agents because of the cap” excuse. Meanwhile, competent front offices like the rams, chiefs, packers, bucs, and many others somehow find a way to add quality FAs under the same cap rules.
  3. Draft a few good players, then fall in love with all of them (“We like our guys”)
  4. Sell it HARD to the fans starting at training camp that “this team is a contender”. Follow that up with JJ and SJ’s stupid weekly radio “shows” to continue the sales job.
  5. If the team wins early in the season, start the “Super Bowl talk”. If they lose, start the “excuse train”. Especially undermining the HC. He can become the scapegoat.
  6. Wash, rinse, repeat.
But here’s how we can all maintain our Cowboys fandom along with some of our own credibility- stop buying the sales pitch. Just adopt this philosophy: I WILL BELIEVE IT WHEN IT HAPPENS.

If the Cowboys ever do anything worthy of respect again, when it happens, we can all enjoy it. Because if it does happen with these Bozos in charge it will be because Lady Luck had sweet mercy on us fans. Until then, it’s ok to be a fan who loves the team but can’t stand the clowns in charge or the pathetic sales job they throw out every year.
Bob are you reaching critical mass?
Lol
I know you are just frustrated.
I get it.
I agree with your post btw

Because by paying their own draftees second contracts and usually on an over paid scale, this sets up the excuse for the Jones duo that they are doing their jobs

It also gives the illusion that they are these great draft guru's - we like our own.

They aren't the top players. The are being paid the top money is all.

This "going market rate" and "next in line payday" is complete BS.
These player's pay should be determined by their production on the field.
....not by what Joe Smoe got paid
or
....by their future potiental play improvement

Agree with everything written but want to add something: Jerry has used the same sales formula for literally decades and it has worked, despite the team results. There is a very good reason for that. It feels good to have hope. That's really what Jerry is selling to the fanbase and when its carted out there, its hard for fans to turn down. We want to believe the draft class is the best ever or that the OC is a boy genius. It feels good to support a super bowl contender even when the team really isn't one.

Jerry is really good at preying on that desire for hope. Maybe the fanbase has reached a point where we will tune him out but I kind of doubt it. His "process" is very disciplined. First they will say they got who they wanted in the draft and are ecstatic with it. Then we will hear how guys are lighting it up in offseason workouts. The hype will continue to build through training camp and then early in the season they will beat some hapless NFC East team and it will reaffirm everything Jerry has been selling, turning all of the skeptics into believers. When the losses come, they will be discredited with excuses. That's going to be when this thread needs to get bumped.

I will sell some hope for a second myself. Jerry isn't selling an 0-16 team, which is why this works. Despite Jerry's missteps, the team really isn't bad per se. IMO, the big reason to believe that the team could suddenly get lucky is that whomever is doing the talent evaluation isn't bad at their job. I guarantee that Stephen and Jerry aren't looking at college tape. That's someone else and that person seems rather competent.

It was the 2008 training camp. Lots of hype coming off the 2007 season and the disappointing loss to the giants. Cowboys seemed to be going all in and signed a bunch of risky free agents like Pacman Jones and Tank Johnson. Right before a preseason game vs San Diego Jerry was interviewed and they asked who he is most excited to see. He said without a doubt Tank Johnson. He has been unblockable through out camp.

The Chargers immediately ran right at him and blew the doors off the Cowboys. Even in a preseason game I just knew disappointment was coming. That was when it REALLY hit me! I have not gone into a season with high expectations since and like you said they have to prove it to me before I believe anything the Jones say. Some years I am more optimistic than others but until they truly show me.......

With this franchise, it is caveat emptor and only the gullible or unknowledgeable believe the sale pitch.

The process truly is no matter what they do, it will lead in ratings, revenue and value and they know it. There are no repercussions to poor decisions and therefore no reason to change people or procedures.

Years ago, I was getting hammered for lowering my standards but what I was doing was just adjusting my expectations by what I was seeing and now I have more company and do not get hammered at all. Acceptance of what is and will not change is the only way to remain a fan for me. And like the team, I am not the fan I used to be.

This locally owned and operated family run business is unlike any other in the history of business. The product is mediocre yet it leads the industry it is in every year and there is not another that the talking heads talk about more or one that makes more profit, gets more attention and cannot be derailed even by buffoons making poor decisions and selling select round steak as prime rib. And people will pay more prime rates for that select round steak this year and not complain about it. Thank you, sir, may I have another?

When I watch a game online, it skirts around the viewership because whoever is hosting it is the 1 viewer that Nielson can track, the hundreds of additional viewers are not tracked.

You're still watching from someone's who's contributing, and they're still getting paid

Thoughtful note, @Bobhaze

When I think of "process", or more to-the-point, a continuous improvement process, I visualize something like:

Set a vision or direction

Assess gaps and needs

Create and implement a plan, and

Continuously monitor performance, adjust and provide feedback. Loop back to the beginning

I really don't see much, or any, of this with the Cowboys. Now, the organization is not obligated to share any of this with the public. Nevertheless, the year-to-year performance provides insight on the Cowboy's "process". As an outsider looking in, it appears the vision is to win the SB (If was a bit more cynical, I would say the vision is to make money which, to be honest, I wouldn't fault them if they overtly stated it).

Beyond on that, the "process" seems to be patch holes through the draft and cheap FA.

As much as I dislike JG, his tenure may have been the closest the Cowboys have come to an actual continuous improvement process... JG just wasn't very good at it.

Nice post.
And I'm not a JG either but there was some semblance of identity...ie think 2016...dominant o-line, power running game and pick your play action spots down field.

This new version of haphazardly attempting to throw it all around the yard with this QB is a recipe for failure.

If there is no effective running game they will ultimately lose with this QB against above average defenses.

It's pretty much proven at this point.

Exactly bro. Especially your next in line and market rate remarks.

My bud Captain Crash's take on second contracts to his own guys is funny..."Maybe if I pay 'em more they'll win." lol

As I said previously...
By Jerry paying them more further creates the illusion that those "are" the top guys at their position when it's just a ploy to the public to convince you to watch all of Jerry's homegrown stars.

I mean,
I thought they paid both CBs Brown and Lewis decent contracts last year based on how they produce on the field. I mean maybe a little wiggle room of overpayment could be debated but nothing like the BS Dak, Zeke and DLaw are totally not earning and being paid.

Heck, they even cut Jaylon!

It's all a part of the Jerry Master Plan, lol

To keep suckers like me and you interested by doing these half measure sacrifices as toward the improvement of the team.

Unfortunately, these band aid fixes ain't what's needed though.

Some things will never change unfortunately.

I'm fed up with this team. I like the players. But the front office putrid at best. They surely out of their league. And that we "can't afford good players" is just an excuse for bad or lack of a strategy. They want cheap....they got it. Then they give big contracts to underformers and lazy bums.

I don't think I can stomach another season. The front office needs to go.

With similar results. Go figure.

In 2 years compared to a decade plus? Considering Garrett was here for 13 and had Jerry's ear the entire time. Even after that the process was a complete mess.
