Titans propose adding 2-point conversion to win in overtime

Proposals to change the rules for overtime have been submitted by three NFL teams, with Tennessee seeking to include 2-point conversions as part of the process of deciding the winner, the league announced Wednesday.

The Titans have recommended that both teams possess the ball in overtime unless the team receiving the kickoff scores a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. That would end the game.

Indianapolis and Philadelphia have proposed that both teams must have an opportunity to possess the ball in overtime.

Under the Tennessee proposal, a team would not be required to go for the 2-point conversion after scoring a TD on the opening series of OT. But going for it and being successful would win the game.

The league’s powerful competition committee, which presents all rule proposal amendments to the 32 owners, will announce its suggestions next week. The owners meetings are in Palm Beach, Florida, from March 27-30.

I like this over the current rules. A team who scored first really has to weigh whether or not it’s worth it to go for 2. If they get it game over and if they don’t get it the game is likely over on the next possession. The other team needs to score a TD and extra point to win.

I still prefer giving both teams a chance to possess the ball. After that if the game is still tied I would go to sudden death.

You would think that teams didn't have 60 minutes of game play to settle this before OT.

The rule is fine as is. If a team plays a regular season game where it's decided on the last possession of the game in regulation, and the winning team had 10 possessions in the game, while the loser only had nine, would anyone complain that the losing team was treated unfairly?

It's idiocy. Teams don't play against air - the other team's kick coverage team is out there, as is their defense. Make a play.

Both teams must have a chance to possess the football in OT. It's asinine the league has let this go on for so long.

That doesn't address the issue of tired defenses making the coin toss too pivotal.

They already give the other a team a chance after a field goal. Just do it after a TD as well.

Once that "other chance" kickoff happens, it's sudden death. It's not complicated.

I think both teams should have a possession.
If 1st team scores td and 2
Then 2nd team has to match that, and that isnt easy.

if they do match it , then the 2 HC come to center of field and do a rock paper scissors contest to determine winner!!!!! :p:hammer:
our coach mike, would use analytic's to determine whether to go with rock paper or scissors!

I'd suggest the owners meet at mid-field and fight it out for the win. This could benefit us when jerry doesn't get back up after the game goes to overtime. he's down and out. call in the gravedigger. :omg:

Play 15 minutes and each team gets one possession. Sudden death after that.
This allows the coin flip as part of the strategy such as wind and direction. A team may want to go on defense first.
