If Jerry was willing to pay Gregory $70 million

The other thing at play, I would guess, is that deep down they look at last year as a success. They won 12 games after people criticized their 2021 offseason.

But last year wasn't a "success". It may be a high water mark for them when compared to the previous quarter century but it was hardly a success.

What's sad is that they probably SHOULDN'T even sign those guys for what they will demand at their ages...but they've sat on their hands for so long they really have no choice if they want to improve this team for this year.

The money might be right, if you can keep the terminate the contracts by year 3 or 4. As long as they aren't asking for lengthy deals I think it works out.

“‘We love you, we will support you. This is the best place for you. We know who you are.'”

This says it all. The stupidity of the GM. And then he left anyway. These players aren’t your friend.

There are comparable, if not better, options at DE in FA.

If you were willing to spend that on Gregory, there's no reason to not be willing to spend that on another edge player - Miller, etc. That ZaDarius Smith contract was totally manageable. He's been a better edge player than Gregory before he got hurt last year in GB.

But we weren't willing to make an offer on a player that is now getting paid less than Gregory.

Don't let the front office spin this after the fact.
I'm sure it was a trust issue.

And there goes Miller. Rumored to the Bills.

Curious to see what he got.

Imagine what happens in 2023 though. The cap shoots up and FAs sign record contracts to the extent of which we've never seen before. It will be the mother of all ridiculous contracts off season. This is the one to take advantage. Next year will be mayhem.

Pretty much. But— remember— you gotta trust the process lol

This upcoming season looks like a disaster in the making and if things don't change in free agency, we might be headed towards 7 and 10 territory. But hey, at least we have a bunch of cap space so we can load up on players that won't make the team.

All things considered I would have liked to keep him, but at the end of the day he had 6 sacks, 4 TFLs, graded out as a horrible run defender, and had 29 pressures. He missed 5 games with nagging injuries/COVID (I can't 100% remember the details - but know he wasn't on the field for 5 games). He's never played over 500 snaps or registered double-digit sacks in a season. He's a great athlete and a talented pass rusher, but the overall production is replaceable and since he's pushing 30 I'm not sure he's a surefire homerun FA signing for 14ish million a year. Not hating on him for smoking weed or any of that, just looking at the numbers. After a while they do tell a story and show what you're likely to get moving forward.

Granted Jones got more but not significantly more.

Again, I don't think they actually have a plan. It's basically let's sign some of our own if we can and then if we can't just wait it out and sign some low hanging fruit and we'll trot out the yearly, "We build through the draft" BS they love to sling around.

That's exactly what it is, they are arrogant and never have a plan B.

Because this Jones clown show truly isn’t interested in doing what it takes to win. Just good enough to keep taking our money.

Might have to settle for a settle for a stopgap/cheap veteran like a Justin Houston or Melvin Ingram player to pair with an early draft pick like Jermaine Johnson/Karlaftis (could fall)/David Ojabo at 24 or someone like Cam Thomas/Sanders from Cincy/Nick Bonito with the 2nd rd pick. You could also spend a late rd pick on a pass rush specialist later in the draft like Ali Fayad.

Bank on Tank playing in more games than last year, Parsons continuing to be Parsons, and improvement from Gholston to help. It wouldn't hurt to get more push from the inside by signing a guy like Suh or Hicks to a short-term deal and using them as a situational DT.

I don't think those are unreasonable projections. If you then take the additional savings from not signing RG and spend it on an impact player somewhere, Bobby Wagner, don't see why you can't field a pretty good defense.

Also, drafting a dynamic player like Dax Hill or Pitre to play in the nickel gives you a lot of blitzing ability.
