The Paper Roster vs Performance Roster

This time of year, all NFL teams are putting together their “paper roster”; the roster for the coming season that exists only on paper and is months away from even putting on pads. The annual “paper championship” is awarded every off season by media folks trying to sell clicks or subscriptions. This is the time of year when the hype machine is on full blast. Both kinds. (“We’re going to be much better” or “This team sucks”)

What really matters is the performance roster. The final combination of players that show that they are collectively a team that can play well together and actually win games that matter. But we won’t really know if they are good until the live bullets start flying in September.

I guarantee you in mid July, Jerry will don his coaching gear and starting selling whatever collection of guys he has gathered and his chubby sidekick will giggle and throw in a “secret sauce” comment for good measure. After the last 26 years, the hype has never felt more hollow. Prove it. Don’t tell me- show me.

Until the paper roster becomes the performance roster, none of us really know if this team is better compared to the recent past or not. Hold off on buying this car until it has been driven.

Last season, many on here was doing the same thing as usual. Whining about the paper roster and the FO.
Many didn't even think they would be .500 or barely above it.

So the performance roster was better than the paper roster.
I don't see any significant changes good or bad talent wise on paper. So with a good draft, there should be improvement. However, we will get, and already will have the same predictions.

yes we lost 2 OL, however, that could be a good thing. Steele takes over for collins, so is that a loss? Many wanted Williams gone, so draft a LG, that is an improvement if they get lucky and hit.

So performance roster as of today, as the paper roster is slightly less, should be about the same. 11-6 or 12-5.
I say slightly less since Neal or Kearse has not been brought back yet, and the OL questions.

Add OL and another LB, big DT in the draft and it looks better.

Well, most people will swear that the upcoming season is based entirely on the last one.

Here are three things I know:

1. The Cowboys have 3 playoff wins in the last 25 years.
2. The last time Dallas made the playoffs in consecutive years was 2006-07.
3. The same two guys are running the show.

Temper expectations for 2022.

Agreed. And because of the last quarter century, sadly our owner seems to just fire up the hype machine every off season and the buyers line up.

I realized a long time ago that it’s entirely possible to love the Cowboys as your favorite team and be completely skeptical of the buffoons running it. The only thing I buy in about this team happens after the fact not before.

Well right now the paper champions have to be the Browns. They are going all in. They won’t be able to pay for these big names for much longer.

Back to the Cowboys, they came out on opening night and gave the champs all they could handle. Remember how bad this team looked in PS? And than we were almost unstoppable on offense until the final play to win against NE. Than it all went down hill.

See I love the journey, because I love football. But having said that I just can’t trust this team. Because of the culture I just can’t believe they will win it. In big games we fold, and the only thing that is consistent is the culture. Wade, JG, and now Mike have felt the demise in big games and Jerry and his sidekicks are the only consistent thing around here.

the defense last you was certainly a pleasant surprise
In no way did I think we had done enough to fix the D, but it improved dramatically
You just never know what you have till they play football. And what you think you have doesn’t always mean you have all season

Yep - so true. The NFL has become a year to year thing. What you were last year is little guarantee that you will be this year.
I never understood why the NFL needs parity. The NFL is a machine whether your team wins or loses. Contracts get bigger, ticket prices get more expensive and the show goes on. I firmly believe this parity crap to be a mistake. Having power houses like Pittsburgh was like we were made other teams try harder, draft better etc.. Now, you don't have to even have a winning record to get into the playoffs. You just need to be slightly better than average-most of the time. Yes. NE was and is the exception. Parity has gotten everyone a participation trophy.

Whatever the roster ends up being, this coaching staff had better be on their *** as soon as training camp starts about avoiding penalties. There is no doubt that this team had a lot of talent this past season, but they threw away important games via penalties. We were the most penalized team in the league. That's beyond acceptable. It would have been unacceptable to be in the top ten most-penalized teams. But we were number 1 in a way that no team should ever want to be number 1.

The huge number of penalties was indicative of poor discipline in general. We saw poor discipline with both the players and the coaches. There were numerous examples of poor clock management all year with the most glaring example being in the playoff game against the 49ers. It's frustrating when you know a team could do better if it would just get its *** disciplined.

I want them to use refs in practice to call legit penalties, and there should be accountability such as a player with too many has to run extra laps or something to give the incentive, or maybe a player who goes all practice long with no penalties gets some kind of special recognition. And then the coaches and the team should practice crunch time clock management.

Will this paper roster turn out to be a quality performance roster? Bobhaze is right that none of us know. However, I do know that how much discipline they instill in training camp is of paramount importance. Great discipline would be enough to make a very talented roster championship material. It probably wouldn't be enough for a below-average roster, but it would make that roster perform the best it's able to. Last year's roster looked like one that thought that as long as enough talent is assembled together, everything else will fall into place. But that doesn't happen with lousy discipline no matter what the talent level is like.

I'm not holding my breath that this team will be among the least penalized teams and will suddenly have stellar clock management. That's what I want them to do. I think that's what most fans want. But we have to see if whatever paper tiger they concoct in the offseason will emerge as a real tiger.

I think the issue is that players know the Jones family not the coaching staff call the shots. If they are cozy with Jerry they can easily go around the coaches. No accountability. That festers to the point where the needed edge to win in the NFL is lost. This team is soft, undisciplined, and mentally weak. Has been for decades. Players change but the culture doesn’t hence the process repeats itself. It will be worst under Stephen because I truly believes he cares nothing about winning. At least Jerry can fake it. It’s a family vanity project. The Jones family needs to go to have a chance at glory again.

Yes. Teams winning in the playoffs are the toughest. Sure they have talent, but talent alone is never enough. One of these days I hope this occurs to “Jerry Charmin” and his giggling son.

When there is a clear separation of paper roster from performance roster, look to coaching.

Philbin totally underperformed with a lot of *healthy* talent. That's not just me. Nate fingered Philbin as holding back the oline with his scheme.

Well said Rev. Instilling some in-game discipline would be one if the best ways to improve this team. It wasn’t just penalties- it was also the incredibly stupid penalties. Like lining up off sides, jumping the snap count; tackling an offensive lineman; etc, etc.

Unfortunately,
Last year's playoff roster was as healthy as any playoff team and minus not many, if any, opening day starters.

And yet...

"They were prepared BUT just nervous."

Dead horse or not, last year was an ultimate choke job not to at least win ONE playoff game.

Sticking to the OP, this roster on paper looks to me to be shaping into all the previous similar versions of past years.
Hoping to squeeze contract years out of every middle of the road FA signed. It hasn't worked before now and I don't even think the team will be as nearly as healthy as last year come playoff time.

So nothing special, nothing too much expected.

My .02

Advance apologies for my repeating this stat in yet another thread but it is just too appropriate not to.

The Average Cowboys are the NFL model for parity.

224 wins and 206 losses in their last 430 games and since their last trophy 26 years ago.

The Cowboys ARE parity.

Period.

At a 52% winning clip, they are just good enough to keep ya interested but NEVER a TRUE contender.

There has never been a more perfect example of Parcells' You are What Your Record says you are than these...

Your Average Cowboys.
