define how well for a center, guard and NT...is it number of starts? sacks? tackles? what if my role is to occupy OL men while LBs make the tackles and make all the money based on their tackling performance? what if the players on my team suck (ala Lawrence being with Jags), and his coach got fired half way through the year....

it doesn't work, because in that system the players take all the risks and owners take non of it.
Kind of like PFF grades but more elaborate and not entirely based on stats. Take Cooper for example. He could have a game that he catches 3 passes for 27 yards. Statistics would say that's a bad game. But if he dictates that the defense can't stack the box and Lamb and Gallup get big numbers cuz if Cooper's attention then that's a good game for Coop.

but how do you measure that for coop? that he was doubled and that allowed others to get open? then every play has to get graded and every defensive play in this case has to be understood in regards to the scheme they were running and if coop was truly doubled or not, and understanding roles and responsibilities of every player on defense.

PFF is far from perfect.

now for WRs it might be easier to come up with stats to grade them. how do you grade a center? or a guard? or a tackle? if a tackle gives up a sack for example, but it was because they blitz three people from his side and the offensive formation didn't account for that, then is it the tackles fault or the OC for not calling the right play? what if the QB held the ball too long.

this opens a can of worms and argument and law suits..

way too imperfect. way too complicated. it also puts players against each other on the same team. for example, a DT whose job it is to occupy OL men and allow LBs to get to the ball and make tackles, vs a DT that his job is to rush the passer vs. a DT that his job is to stop the run.

sorry, it doesn't make sense when you dig into the details of how it should work.

Well keep in mind that I thought of this at 5 AM when I was fighting insomnia. I haven't been planning this or working on it for weeks. Just some thoughts I had about how I wish this could be.

Basically to summarize how I wish the NFL worked is teams would get rewarded for drafting well. Players would get guaranteed money based on their play and players would be protected in case of injury. So teams that draft well can keep their draft picks and players could cash in on their play.

So take DeMarco Murray for example. Or RBs is general. In general their prime part of their careers is their 1st 3 years. You get DeMarco Murray who's offensive MVP in his rookie contract. But he doesn't make a lot on that rookie contract. His 2nd contract he gets paid but the wear and tear on his body causes him to miss out on bonuses and salary cuz he got cut because his body broke down. So when he was younger he dominated but was paid low and then when he got a 2nd contract his body slowed down and he lost salary cuz he was cut and his contract voided. I wish there was a way to help WRs, RBs, CBs that are better younger to get the most money they can.

So my dream system would be teams get rewarded for drafting well, players get rewarded for playing well on a more frequent basis and not have to wait for another contract. Teams get to keep their players and players get more money is my wish. Now I haven't thought through all the ins and outs and mechanics and legality of all that. But that's just a summary of how I wish the NFL worked.

no it could be done with existing cap, just no rolling over, no pushing money into future, all of the cap is paid out each year to the players
in a fair fashion.
There could also be a bonus cap which only teams that make playoffs can use.
The further a team goes the bigger that cap gets , so a SB winning team/players would make a lot more than the teams that dont make playoffs.
This would also encourage teams to try hard to make playoffs and win once there.

I didn't think of the roll over situation. I'm not sure how that would play out. Still, if a team spends all of the available cap space, they'd be spending more than they normally would.

No salary cap is my dream get rid of it.
Me too. I feel like there are 2 time frames in the NFL for me. Pre-Salary cap and Post-Salary cap. I personally enjoyed the pre salary cap era more than the post salary cap era. I wish we could go back to it.

now I get your point and I agree.

I think the team that drafted a player should get some kind of a break in resigning their draftees, like counting less percentage against the cap....this brings about loyalty to a team and they can offer players more money for similar cap hit some other team that would be vying for their services...

also, adding more performance clauses in the contracts for rookies at least, so if they out play their draft status based on round, then they get paid more for better performance. I believe there is something like that already in place, but I don't know the details.

pay for performance should become standard in NFL contracts, but that's where it gets really really really complicated if teams want to use it. CBA would not agree to anything complicated.

No way players would agree to that
And why would they want to be locked into one team for over half their career?
Would you want to be locked into your job for that long?
The players get a percentage of revenue so just that means players salaries aren’t going down
Now I think a more equal distribution of the salaries is needed
I think capping what pct of the cap can go to any one player spreads the money more equally around the rosters
But the idea of more money going to owners is never happening g
And more restrictions on FA is probably not even legal
As a reminder sports leagues didn’t decide to grant free agency to athletes
They were forced to and they should have been
Signing a guy out of college and holding his rights for more than half of his career is kinda unamerican

I made a post like this awhile ago. I'm tired of seeing every season another player has set the market. Cap each position off at an affordable number so all teams can shop
It’s simple
The players get a percentage of revenue and revenue is growing and will continue for the near future
Salaries will only go down if revenue goes down and that’s not happening anytime soon
It’s not like the nfl can just implement any system of pay it wants

If I could change the landscape of the NFL as far as contracts go then this would be my dream NFL. The salary cap and FA as we know it would change. This is just a rough idea so I know there's flaws in it but try reading it to get the general idea.
-every draft pick would be immediately under contract. 1st round is a 6 year deal, 2nd round 5 year deal and 3-7 rounds and UFA are on a 4 year deal.
- every player makes a minimum wage. So all players make the same amount. Once a player has played a certain %of snaps then he goes to the next tier.
-the next tier is starters and contributors have a system of metrics, numbers, stats, etc that would determine their value and they would be paid accordingly.
-every season the NFL would release a salary cap number for each position. So the best QB in this system would make 50 million, the 2nd QB would make 48 million and on down the line depending on your end of the season grade.
-injured players who contributed but had season ending injuries, ala Michael Gallup, would be paid on a projection of their metrics.
- when a contract is up the team can decide to keep or release the player. So kind of like when an expansion draft comes. Every team would be able to designate half of their FAs as keepers and the other half exposed.

So in my dream system teams would be rewarded for drafting well. So in my system for this year we entered FA with 12 or so FAs. We then could say we are keeping 6 and exposing 6 for other teams. That would mean Jayron, Gregory, Anger, etc would be retained and if they ball out next year then they'll be well paid. If Gregory gets high all the time and sucks then he won't get paid. In my system the players would be more motivated to play harder since it directly correlates with their paychecks.

Also in my system if you have someone like Dak Prescott who explodes his rookie year, then his rookie year he makes 35 or so million. He doesn't have to risk his body hoping he doesn't get injured before he gets paid. Also in my system if Zeke is the 31st best RB in the league then we don't have to pay him 18 million.

I'm just brainstorming on a way to reward teams for drafting well and then reward players for playing well and giving them some form of guaranteed money in case of injury on a rookie contract. Also I feel this would help motivate players to play hard and stay out of trouble.

Also i know that most people would like this, especially agents, and there's some kinks that would have to be worked out but that would be my wish for the NFL. The NFL was funner back in the 70s and 80s before FA hit. Teams that drafted well usually lasted. IMO I wish we could get back to a system like that but also a system were the players can make serious bank if they play well.

I would reorganize the league into 1 company with each owner as a shareholder.

Then the league could unilaterally set salaries without breaking any collusion laws.

They would only need to keep the salaries high enough to prevent a new league from starting and signing away NFL starters.

While your proposal resolves certain issues, it creates others. Can you imagine coaching players who are all fighting to create these performance driven stats? The Hoodie would become irrelevant, because players would never sacrifice anything under that system for the common good.

Yeah my proposal does create some different problems. I do think players like Collins wouldn't come to camp completely out of shape if he knew his play would determine his pay. Or Albert Haynesworth laying on the ground in the middle of a play in a blowout loss to the Eagles.

I don't feel my idea is perfect, more like brainstorming and creating a discussion. I do feel the current system has problems. I don't feel there ever will be a perfect system that rewards players on any contract for maximum performance and effort.

In my dream, Jerry is forced to sell the team to a passionate but competent owner who then hires qualified people to both build and coach the team.

Yes!!! That's ultimate dream. I'm trying to dream up proposals that nullify our incompetence at GM.

To me the best system would be no player can make more than 8-10% of the cap and no cap juggling, $$ hit is the year payed, I can't believe the rank and file allow so few players to get a majority of the cap $, that's not what a strong union does. It's crazy the way the system is set up currently.

I agree, I don't like how the system is set up. No one player should take up 20% of your cap. Now the team is held hostage by that player. If that player has a bad season or gets injured then 20% of your resources are wasted.

Top players deserve more, just don't get screwing the others players, the paying fields needs to be leveled

Here's a novel idea:

1. Get rid of the Cap.
2. Get rid of "Market Value." The job is worth what I, as am employer, am willing to pay for the job to get done. What someone else is willing to pay is irrelevant to my business. Some teams will flourish - some will not. You know, kind of like the real world.
3. Get rid of inter-Conference play
4. The two best records in each conference playoff to see who goes to the Super Bowl.

No one wins a "Tournament" to be declared World Champions - they actually would be.

I'm all in on a reduction of the cap hit for drafted players for as long as they remain with the home team. Even into their second and third contract. I've also wondered about removing the cap from the QB room and having the cap only count against all the other positions. But, there's probably more reasons that doesn't help than reasons it might.
