One of the best articles I seen explaining the Russian army's ineptitude and why some many military analysts were wrong about Russia's ability to overwhelm Ukraine.

One of the great things about the 21st century (and really the last part of the 20th) was that most armies no longer "practiced" the art of war with large units (Corps sized or larger). Most of the wars post WWII were small unit affairs.

Prior to that armies were mobilizing and conducting large-scale movements & assaults every 30-40 years, so that the low-level unit commander in one conflict would then became a large-unit field commander in the next.

Doesn't work like that anymore. Most militaries no longer have the "Old heads" that have been part of large unit campaigns.

The result is what you see with today's Russian military. The lessons learned from WWII are long forgotten.

In addition, there is such a reliance placed on technology that human thinking has gone by the wayside– Not that soldiers and unit commanders in the old Soviet system were encouraged to think for themselves based on the situation hence a big reason why they had such incredibly high losses in WWII.

According to a decree published on a Russian government portal Thursday, the troops will be called to begin service on April 1 until July 15. The Defense Ministry promised earlier this week that they “will not be sent to any hot spots,” and that all those called up in last spring’s draft will be sent home.

I understand the Ukrainian Air Force's position but stating weapons being supplied and fighter jets/SAMs not being supplied are not mutually exclusive. It is totally understandable the need for air defense support but other United States or NATO supplied weapons that have been used in the war against Russia's military is not a myth. The tweet is likely emotionally charged, which is, again, totally understandable.

Totally understandable, but really what the jist of their string of tweets is about what is more desperately "needed" and that's air defense. It's great to have weapons to stop tanks from rolling into your towns, but being able to stop the assault from the air is crucial for them.

The thing is Ukraine could have invested in such weaponry and did not.

After what happened in the Crimea, the possibility of more Russian land-grabs in/from Ukraine was a distinct possibility.

To a lesser extent many countries in Eastern/Western Europe had their heads in the sand when it came to the USSR... Er... Russia.

I just shake my head at the ineptitude of the Russian military.

They mostly sent barely trained conscripts into those areas. Of course they'd be inept. They held their best troops out of it. I half-believe it was a miscalculation on an epic scale and half-believe it was a trap for the West.

I 've wondered about that. If they did invest in such weapons, would that have just provoked Russia at that time. Seems like the prudent thing is to always be prepared for potential Russia intrusion.

Good point.

Keep in mind the mobilization of the Russian army took some time and it was watched every step of the way.

And yeah, if Russia is your neighbor who's already absconded off with your dog, he's probably going to be back for your wife at some point.
