Objectively, how does Jerry compare with the average NFL owner?

So Jerry gets a pass on 26 years of failure because of the early success? Holy hell....

In that case lets give the Ford family a pass because the Lions won championships in 1952, 1953, and 1957. Cleveland gets a pass too since they won it all in 1964.

Nobody said he gets a pass did they??? Nope!! The question was is JJ an average owner. I stated why he is above average.

I feel for this discussion we have to acknowledge that different fans have a different expectation for what qualifies as a good owner. I'm seeing 2 different opinions being expressed based on 2 different premises.
Premise 1- the Dallas Cowboys are a business to make money.
Premise 2- the Dallas Cowboys are a competitive sports team that is there to win Super Bowls.
Fans operating under premise 1 are 100% right in their views of Jerry as the owner being successful. It's proven fact he's the best owner in the NFL under premise 1.
Fans operating under premise 2 are 100% correct in their opinion that Jerry is a failure at being an owner and is in the bottom 5% of NFL owners.

So my take away is fans operating under either premise is completely right in their belief and has data to prove it.

As an owner, there is no doubt about his financial success.
But, a good owner hires a GM and gets the heck out of the way.
He fails in that regard.
Grade: 50% at most. Eyeball test: 10%

He has made the NFL much better no question about it and that's all the league cares about. Give the man credit for that.

As the owner of my favorite sports team he pisses us all off. Gonna stop there just got banned for 30 off Facebook.

Even as a business entity premise no.1 is not supported. All Dallas Cowboys corporate registrations and trademarks are under the name Dallas Cowboys Football Club Inc. Therefore it is an incorporated club to play football.

It is also business coded as GS1071 ENTERTAINMENT SERVICES-NAMELY, FOOTBALL EXHIBITIONS RENDERED LIVE IN STADIUM AND THROUGH THE MEDIA OF RADIO AND TELEVISION BROADCASTS. So, Football entertainment is the business. Tex Schramm, Tom Landry, Gil Brandt, Jimmy Johnson, Bob Ackles, and John Wooten understood the winning is the business of a entertainment football club.

Bottom line, The Dallas Cowboys Football Club Inc. is an entertainment Sports Football Club. So ask yourself...

He needs to buy McCarthy a super bowl. Looks like he's just buying bowls of spegetti. Weed is now legal we can get another Gregory cheap.
It requires a License where I live and I have one. I'd take Gregory back if we could get him but he signed with Denver

Jerry is a top owner. He might even be the best. It’s certainly arguable.

If you want to judge him on the lack of playoff success then go after Jerry the president or Jerry the GM or both. That Jerry is not good at hiring coaches and staying out of the way.

It is the owner’s responsibility to replace a failing GM or at least the President of team operations who is in charge of the GM search. In not doing so, it shows a negligence toward the product on the field

He's an excellent owner, arguably the best in the sport.

He's an extremely poor GM, arguably the worst in the sport. One can only hope that as his personnel influence continues to wane Stephan will eventually shift such decisions entirely over to a qualified "football guy".

Most owners dont hire their GMs directly, they hire search firms and then make hires based on their recommendations.

I didn't read all the threads on this post. Sorry if this has already been said. But you have rank Jerry before and after the cap. Before the cap Jerry dominated the NFL. After the cap Jerry started to slide. He did build a primo stadium, so you can't rank him at the bottom. But I think he is rather close to bottom today!

Without the help of bellicheck and Brady the pats would be too. Doesn’t the owner get credit for hiring the people he hires? The majority of owners aren’t football people so that would mean they are all tied for last lol

There's a world of difference between the likes of Bill Belichick and Jerry Jones. Belichick could do well with another less effective than Brady, although, it would likely be on a lesser level of success. Without Will McClay, the Dallas Cowboys would suffer catastrophically for NFL talent. Jerry hasn't even been able to employ head coaches that fit the bill because of his reputation of being a toxic manager. His list of HCs bear that out, by and large. Other owners know better than to falsely pretend to be worthwhile GMs and avoid hiring family members, despite their sad lack of qualifications.

I think compared to the majority of other owners, Jerry comes off as extremely insecure and somewhat backwards.

Most of these guys didn't purchase an NFL football team as a means of making a living, they were already huge successes, most of them owners of well known companies. This was almost a side interest to them. As far as the football operations, the majority doesn't want anything to do with that. Their only participation is when they hire/fire a GM. They are mostly in the background and most of the time you only really see them when their team wins the Super Bowl.

I think they first saw Jerry as a nuisance when Jerry would try something new in the marketing process. However, they later determined that Jerry is a great salesman who comes up with more ways to make money. I think Jerry's entry into the Hall of Fame was their way of thanking Jerry for the increase in revenue.

I think Jerry amuses them with his desire to be seen as an actual NFL football authority. Sometimes I think they deliberately appeal to his vanity so their team's management can take advantage of him sometimes.

Jerry hired Jimmy then bought him a Superbowl team

92 probably the best cowboys team ever had the 19th league ranked team salary. Not even in the top half. He didn’t buy Jimmy anything!
