Troy Aikman has watched the Cowboys’ endeavors from the broadcast booth a close eye on the organization. As a member of the FOX broadcast team, he’s commented on Dallas’ decisions during games while popping up now and then to criticize his former team.

“I thought my skills would be better used in the front office, but then my personal circumstances changed,” Aikman said. “And as I was talking about earlier with my girls, I became a single father when they were quite young and I was raising them and I just felt that it would be extremely selfish on my part to pursue a career as an executive knowing the amount of time that was required.”

Now 55 years old, Aikman noted the league’s trend of hiring younger guys for GM positions. He hasn’t completely closed the door on being of help to an NFL front office, though.

“I think the GM road has probably passed but what I wouldn’t rule out is at some point in time, whether that’s with Dallas, now they’ve not reached out to me, or if it’s with some other club,” Aikman said. “I could see having some kind of role to where I do think that I have something to offer that I think could really help a club if utilized and used the right way and if it was, it might be something down the road I would consider.”

I think Aikman may be selling himself short with the age issue.
There are at least a dozen head coaches over 55 (three over 60).
Belichick is doing HC and defacto GM - and he will be come 70 in a week.
I'm sure there are some GMs in their 50s.
I get him entering the front office at a late stage is his drawback; but Aikman has still been connected to the league through broadcasting - observing and garnering knowledge about franchise operations (and the changes over the two decades since he retired) through his work.

Aikman as GM ?
Interesting.
Maybe this is somebody Jerry would step aside for ?

Que the Aikman gave his approval to draft LaFleur posts.
Everyone has a poor draft pick. Landry took Howard Richards in 1st round.

Does this mean you’d be against Troy involved in our front office ?

Nice idea but Jerry isn't giving up his gig for anyone, not even Aikman. I do think that Dak could benefit a great deal having Aikman as his QB coach, but I doubt Aikman would take the job. He would rather coach someone who truly has a passion for winning and I don't think Dak fits that category.

It is assumption that Aikman would make a good GM. How many ex players are actually GM's? And damned few ex players are HC's.

The skill sets are different. Matt Millen made an excellent GM.

Al Davis was a former coach who became an owner. I'm not saying he was a good one, though.

Especially Aikman, he hasn't been hanging in the Booger amen corner like Irvin and Smith. He has at least insinuated the problem with the Cowboys those two point at every thing else but the problem.

Booger is not giving up control to anyone. He'll let his son screw around and step in when he feels he needs to like the Gregory situation but he is the final word on the Cowboys.
