I say Dan Quinn should continue helping buy the groceries. Maybe not all of them, but certainly some of them.

Looking back at last year's Dan Quinn influence in last year's draft, Quinn certainly did well by convincing Jerry to draft LB/Edge Rusher Micah Parsons. DT Osa Odighizuwa was a pleasant surprise and contributor throughout most of the season. Even the recently criminally troubled CB Kelvin Joseph showed signs he could become a key contributor if he is able to stay out of jail and make much smarter off-the-field decisions. LB Jabril Cox is definitely going to be a gem starter if he's able to fully recover from his torn ACL. And DE Chauncey Golston, DT Quinton Bohanna, CB Nahshon Wright and S Israel Mukuamu showed flashes of their potential and how they could grow into very good contributors to our defense if they keep improving under Dan Quinn's tutelage.

So, I would say Dan Quinn absolutely hit it out of the park for the Cowboys during last year's draft, and I am so glad he decided to remain for many years to come. Definitely am looking for Coach Quinn's continued influence in future drafts.

Don't forget the FA's he had influence to bring in to fill some gaps. And was able to retain some of them, a few of the key ones.
As now the defense for vet players, many 2nd year players, going into year 2 of his defense. We should see an improvement of the overall defense. and if they get a few impact rookies in the draft as well to contribute year 1 in the system.

I can see the defense being better, even if slightly better. Improve the run defense and they still do not have a killer type pass rush. Need to work on that.
Even if they knock off 1 or so yard per carry average will help.

Obviously Quinn milked a lot out of a horrible defense last year. As a coach I would say that Quinn as a coach is a plus.

But Quinn also obviously had a huge part in draft decisions last year. Was the improvement in defense more attributable to Quinn or just adding Parsons?

So far Quinn’s hand picked selections on defense haven’t done much. That doesn’t mean they won’t, but I’m not so sure he should be bing the groceries. Maybe he should stick to cooking the meal only.

Everyone sucks..............booohooooo!!!!!

That is completely unfair to say.

No minicamps. No training camp. Expecting big contributions from them last year is unreasonable and unrealistic expectations.

Quinn got lucky just as the Joneses did.

They would have taken Horn or Surtain over Parsons and even got cute with that trade because they could have lost Parsons and then where are they?

The number one objective in this draft was to fix that awful run defense and how does a CB do that?

Just how involved was Quinn in the ATL drafts?

I can see them going lb or Jordan Davis for Quinn to open up the defense even more. But I feel oline is the main priority. We’ll see who wins in the draft room.

  • The key issue is that Dan Quinn and McClay developed a great working relationship immediately.
    • Per local sports talk radio reports and Cowboys dc.com media people.
  • There was always a strain between Marinelli and the scouting dept.
    • McClay's predecessor, Ciscowski, failed to get coaches input on the draft board.
    • It was the primary reason that Ciscowski was demoted and McClay promoted to the top spot.
    • McClay and Stephen Jones went overboard giving Marinelli input because they wanted to prevent the Ciscowski type issues.
  • Due to personality issues with Ciscowski and then with Marinelli, the scouting dept. and the coaching staff were not in sync in building the draft board.
  • Summary:
    • The Cowboys finally have a legit NFL coaching staff.
    • Dan Quinn knows how to work with people including the scouting dept. and players.
    • Kellen Moore as OC is one of those coaches that grinds through long hours. Garrett was a 9 to 5 type.
    • McCarthy knows how to handle a coaching staff and player personalities far better than Garrett.

The pick of Joseph over Humphrey (and a couple of other corners) is concerning. Jospeh is really looking like another one of those train wreck second round picks so far.

OSA did look pretty good in the first half of the year, but tailed off some at the end of the year. Maybe it’s the rookie wall, but so far he seems to have promise.

We took Wright in round 3 and a lot of people shook their heads on that pick. It is clear that he was a Quinn favorite. I don’t have an issue with the pick so much as we probably took him two (or more) rounds too early. That’s how much we liked him and he really wasn’t a factor at all last year.

Cox was clearly BPA type of player when we selected him. I think he will turn out to be a good one, but I don’t know how you pass on him in the 4th. The better question is why take Wright over Cox in the 3rd? These are the types of moves that make you scratch your head.

If Marinelli was still the D-Coordinator, they probably would have drafted an OT instead of Parsons.
- Even if they did draft Parsons, Marinelli likely would not have used him as a pass rusher.

Joseph was a better prospect than the CBs available at that pick.
- Joseph was as good as it gets in his first NFL start.
- He gave up -2 yards receiving and zero catches beyond the line of scrimmage.
- Immediately after returning from 6 games on IR, Joseph became a top special teams player.
- If he fails, it is due to character, not due to a lack of on-field ability.

Odighi was terrific as a rookie.
- He started 12 games and played a high percentage of snaps.
- They over-used him in the first half of the season.

CB Wright was one of the top 3 young players in training camp.
- They had 3 veteran starters in front of him plus a higher draft pick (Joseph).
- i.e. He was not going to get much playing time regardless of how he performed.

Golston was a solid contributor.
- He was thrust into more snaps than they would have preferred due to injury issues with Gregory and DLaw.
- He played at much as 70% of snaps in some games as a non-starter.
- Quinn's scheme allows for CBs that don't play the traditional CB technique.
- Diggs has success in part because Quinn schemed to allow Diggs to play his style.
- Wright projects to play a similar style (i.e. Physical and often with backend help which allows the CB to be a play maker).

Jabril Cox fell to the 4th because he needed a year in the NFL and because he might not be a full-time player.
- He is a perfect fit in Quinn's scheme as the LB next to Parsons on passing downs.
- Last season that was Neal's role.
- Jabril Cox was top 2 in the preseason in big plays made but was #1 in big plays allowed (i.e. All or nothing).
- His preseason issues were exactly what was expected of him pre-draft (i.e. Run fit problems).
- Quinn schemed to have a spot for those types of coverage LBs (Jabril only needs to be better than Neal in run defense).

Josh Ball was on IR all season.
- He was better at LT with Florida State in 2017 than Steele was at RT with Texas Tech in 2020.
- Ball has not been in trouble since 2018 and was never arrested or charged with a crime.

Simi Fehoko was active for multiple games which is about all you can expect from a 5th round rookie WR.

Quinton Bohanna averaged 25% of snaps.
- Even veteran starting NT types only average about 60% of snaps.

Israel Mukuamu was active for some games.
- They had 4 veteran Safeties in front of him (Kearse, Hooker, Wilson, and Kazee).
- i.e. He was not going to get playing time unless they had multiple players injured at that position.

Matt Farniok was active for the majority of games which is rare for 7th round rookie interior OLineman.
- He looked good in the snaps he played in the regular season.
- He looked good at both OC and OG in the preseason.

Or a DC that can make a gourmet meal regardless of the ingredients.

They really have let the DC have a lot of say during the draft/player acquisition process. Which isn't a bad thing but has been odd was when they get the groceries for Rob Ryan then can the "chef" after buying the groceries thaw and then ask Kiffin/Rod to work with man corners when they were from the cover 2 defense philosophy.
Then they believed Rod and his hustle over talent(not 100% serious) mindset making them pass over certain DL for "hard" workers that had shorter ceilings.

I just hope when Quinn goes they try to find the next DC that shares his defensive philosophy and not someone that needs all new ingredients for his scheme to work

I think this is the core of our problem, Jerry as a GM did not establish a cowboys system amd drat players for that system and hire coaches who can maximize talent in that system. He has Garrett telling him whom to draft, Rob ryan, Kiffin, Rod, Quinn...coaches who are long gone before the players they like actual
develop. Take Pittsburg for example, they stick to their system and draft players that fit their 3-4 and hire coaches who can coach 3-4. NE too, strong DE's, intelligent LBs and one one CBs

We keep changing systems and coaches every few years, just nuts

Still way to early to tell about the guys picked last year not named Parsons and it's 100% normal. Maybe they don't work out but I like the type of guys he is trying to bring in and some of them will hit, taking the next step this year.

This…can we give the kids a chance to develop?
