Here’s a very interesting link showing EVERY COWBOY PLAYER EVER DRAFTED YEAR BY YEAR. You can judge for yourself the players who have been surprisingly good and who has been surprisingly bad over the years.
https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/dal/draft.htm

Three things to notice which players were “successful picks” and those who weren’t:
  1. Total Games played in the NFL.
  2. Honors (if any- pro bowls, All Pro, HOF)
  3. Value (example- a 3rd- 7th round pick who played a ton of NFL games is a HIGH VALUE pick.
This isn’t the “be all, end all”, but it is a fairly simple and accurate way to know if a draft pick turned into a quality NFL player or not. If a drafted player only plays in 10 NFL games in 4 yrs…not good. On the other hand, if they play in 60+ games in 4 yrs, good player.

Some quick examples of a “high value” and low value pick:
SOME HIGH VALUE PICKS:
  • Anthony Hitchens-LB, 4th round pick in 2014 draft- has played in 119 NFL games, made a pro bowl and is still playing in the league.
  • Dak Prescott- QB, 4th round pick in 2016 draft- played in 85 games, NFL Offensive ROY, made pro bowl, etc. (whatever one thinks about Dak, he’s “high value”)
  • Tony Pollard- RB, 4th round pick, played in 46 games, and probably current best RB.
SOME LOW VALUE PICKS
  • David Arkin- G, 2011 4th round, only played in 4 NFL games.
  • Gavin Escobar, TE, 2013 2nd round, played in 64 games in 6 seasons; was out of the league in 5 years.
  • The entire Cowboys 2009 draft, lol!
You get the idea. Interesting to look at the history of Cowboys draft picks.

I didnt know they drafted Brig Owens. I remember him on the "Skins which are red" (this forum has to be the only spot on the internet where you are not allowed to same the washington franchise name for decades)

I remember that 2009 draft and how much I hated it then and really hate it now. Legitimately the worst draft in Cowboys history.

Micah surpassed the career value of that entire class in one season what they collectively did their whole NFL careers for 12 players. Sheesh.

I wonder if the undrafted Qb ,we once had here, would have been considered “high value” if he had been counted on this list…..”whatever one thinks about him”

Almost all those guys were completely out of the league in 3-4 years.

Man I wanted Arkin to work out. Too bad Escobar didnt work out either. If he didnt tear his ACL that year I think he wouldve been a stud. I knew that 2009 draft was bust after listing to JJ speak about them the first time. I wonder why they traded out the 2nd that year. They shouldve traded up that year and grab 2-3 players they knew they wanted.

Have use this for years and this is also on Wikipedia...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dallas_Cowboys_draft_history

Wikipedia is a little better as you can click to post 2005 players combine results in their biographies.

An interesting note about the link- if you click on the column that says “wAV” (which stands for “weighted approximate value”) it will rank every draft choice by what their value to the team was over their career. It includes games played, honors, etc.

The top 5 on the wAV list are:
  • Emmitt Smith
  • Randy White
  • Bob Lily
  • Tony Dorsett
  • Michael Irvin
All five were #1 picks. And all are in the HOF.
