I think I see where the confusion lies. Over the years the term "World War III" has become synonymous with "Nuclear War". It's not necessarily the same thing however. The possibility of World War III was stated, not nuclear war.

That doesn't mean to say that he didn't mean to imply the risk of it, but clearly he stated World War III and not Nuclear War. All of these journalism sites are going by the assumption that World War III is the same thing as Nuclear War when it doesn't really mean that.
I think it was more rhetoric than anything. He gave that statement a day before Defense Ministers/Secretaries from 40+ countries were going to meet at a US Air Force Base in Germany. He wasn't going to say the word "Nuclear".

Kinda like in those mob movies, where they tell a witness, it would be shame if there was an unfortunate accident.

I don’t see a nuclear war happening. It’d just be mutual destruction. IMO…

I agree completely. Whenever NATO or the EU are showing solidarity, or their Ukraine war is going badly, Putin and his punks trot out the “Nuclear” word again like it’s the boogie man meant to show how tough and scary they are. Not only would it never happen and be mutual destruction - the Russian missiles are probably all connected to dead or stolen batteries.

Maybe, but he did say World War III. Journalists ran with it to mean nuclear war though.....sensationalizing it as journalists always do rather than report factually.

There are some people that when given the chance and feel they have nothing left to lose would burn it all rather than accept defeat. Putin strikes me as the type. If he feels Russia is failing or more importantly to him that he's about to be deposed, he might try something. It's whether those around him let him do it that's unlikely.

I remember when I was in Basic at Fort Bliss in El Paso.
That installation was for the 56th ada Air Defense and we would occasionally see soldiers from different countries training there.

Have to wonder if they will be getting an influx of Ukranian soldiers as of late.
I learn something new every day. Thank you for your service. I had no ideal that you had served.

I didn’t advocate sending troops in, but instead enforce a no fly zone. Ukraine has proven they have the infantry to do the job by themselves on the ground. And keep sending them lots of weapons.
I am shocked that Russia has not gained air supremacy. I feel like Putin has been totally shocked at the lack of success from his armed forces. I think that Putin has been misled by his generals about their capabilities. Putin is not the only one that is shocked. I have watched the Russian war games for the last few years and they were impressive to say the least. I guess the armed forces looks a lot better when nobody is shooting back.

I came across this article that may explain some of the reasons why. It's a pretty interesting article about the Intelligence US is sharing with Ukraine, may also explain why so many Russian senior officers have been killed too. Here's a small bit from the article......

"As Russia launched its invasion, the U.S. gave Ukrainian forces detailed intelligence about exactly when and where Russian missiles and bombs were intended to strike, prompting Ukraine to move air defenses and aircraft out of harm’s way, current and former U.S. officials told NBC News.

That near real-time intelligence-sharing also paved the way for Ukraine to shoot down a Russian transport plane carrying hundreds of troops in the early days of the war, the officials say, helping repel a Russian assault on a key airport near Kyiv..........

Ukraine continues to move air defenses and aircraft nearly every day with the help of American intelligence, which is one reason Russia has not been able to establish air dominance. In some cases, Ukraine moved the targeted air defense systems or planes just in time, the officials said.

“The Russian military has literally been cratering empty fields where air defenses were once set up,” one U.S. official said. “It has had an enormous impact on the Russian military’s ability on the ground.”"

Russia’s Putin To Hand Over Keys To War While He Has Cancer Surgery

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/worl...while-he-has-cancer-surgery-report/ar-AAWN94M
"Putin will reportedly put hardline Security Council head and ex-FSB chief Nikolai Patrushev in power while he is dealing with surgery. Patrushev, 70, has played a big role in the Ukraine war thus far and convinced Putin that Kyiv is overrun by neo-*****, the Daily Mail reports."

I extremely doubt anyone convinced Putin other than Putin himself.

Relations between the two countries have been hostile since the 2014 Ukrainian revolution, which was followed by Russia's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, & due to Russia's backing for the separatist fighters of the Donetsk People's Republic & the Luhansk People's Republic in a war, conflicts that had killed more.
Russia-Ukraine War LIVE: Russia warns of nuclear war
Nuclear saber-rattling is an unattractive habit, & Putin & his aides resort to it often. In 2008, they warned Poland that it would risk annihilation if it joined a U.S.sponsored missile defense program. (The Poles joined anyway.) In 2014, they warned that an attempt to push Russia out of Crimea, which they had grabbed from Ukraine, could trigger a nuclear response & so it goes on....

Russia's tanks in Ukraine have a 'jack-in-the-box' design flaw. And the West has known about it since the Gulf war

Experts say battlefield images show Russian tanks are suffering from a defect that Western militaries have known about for decades and refer to as the "jack-in-the-box effect."

The problem relates to how the tanks' ammunition is stored. Unlike modern Western tanks, Russian ones carry multiple shells within their turrets. This makes them highly vulnerable as even an indirect hit can start a chain reaction that explodes their entire ammunition store of up to 40 shells.

The resulting shockwave can be enough to blast the tank's turret as high as a two-story building, as can be seen in a recent video on social media.

"Any successful hit ... quickly ignites the ammo causing a massive explosion, and the turret is literally blown off."
The flaw means the tank's crew -- usually two men in the turret and a third driving -- are sitting ducks, said Nicholas Drummond, a defense industry analyst specializing in land warfare and a former British Army officer.
"If you don't get out within the first second, you're toast."

Want to contact CIA from Russia? Agency points to darknet

The CIA says Russians disaffected by Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine may be trying to get in touch with U.S. intelligence — and it wants them to go to the darknet.

The agency on Monday began a new push to promote its presence on a part of the internet accessible only through specialized tools that provide more anonymity. The CIA has a darknet site that has the same features as its regular homepage but accessible only through the Tor internet browser, which has encryption features not available on most regular browsers.

A CIA official speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence matters says the agency knows “there are concerned Russians who are desperately trying to reach CIA.” The official declined to say how many people had tried to reach out since the war began.

“It’s not safe to directly engage Americans physically or virtually” in Russia, the official said. “For those people that want to engage with us securely, this is the way to do it.”

Russian troops stole $5M worth of farm vehicles from a John Deere dealership, which remotely locked the thieves out of the equipment

Russian troops occupying the Ukrainian city of Melitopol stole nearly $5 million of farm vehicles from a John Deere dealership and shipped some of them more than 700 miles to Chechnya, CNN reported, only to find they had been rendered useless by a remote-locking system that prevented the thieves from turning the equipment on.

But the remote access technology of the equipment, which allows for GPS tracking and some of the vehicles to be remotely operated, prevented them from being used.
