My biggest concern because its the team's biggest weakness is the Oline.Happy draft day!
I heard both Jerry and Stephen state, if the defense stays the same, they expect improvement. Many young prospects are expected to take on larger roles. It appears they are banking on Dan Quinn as the teacher.
When you look at the 30 visits, which usually gives us a road map, the majority of the defensive players are more day 3 prospects or undrafted free agents. Jordan Davis was the only expected 1st rd prospect, where we saw 2 DT's, Sam Williams as day 2 players, but the rest were all day 3 guys.
3 Top receivers, 2 top Guards, 2 1st rd Tackles, 3 top TE's
I've heard from a few different insiders that the Cowboys want to reshape their offense in this year's draft. They want to get more physical and mentally tough.
I don't think it was a coincidence nor just a cap cutting move when the team decided to trade Amari Cooper, release Collins and allow Connor Williams to walk. They were part of the problem, no matter if it was on or off the field. They want to draft dogs, with an edge.
Based on the clues, my prediction is no defensive players until day 3. They believe they are covered enough at Edge, but not at Guard, WR and TE which will be the 1st 3 positions addressed barring any trades.
I mean 8 of 11 picks were on defense last seasonIt's always offense...!... LOL
Is it coincedence ?
LVE was the last defensive player selected in first round ?
Before (or after LVE) who was the next defensive player we took in 1st round before then ..?
...Err... ?
The team has a real talent issue at DE, doesn't have much depth at LB, DT still lacks high level talent but yeah, let's just use all our prime picks on shiny offensive toys for Dak.
Seems like the exact thing Jerry would do. They have to justify that big contract to Dak so they have to surround him with the best talent they can find. Because if Dak is just OK, they will look foolish with that contract just like they look foolish with the Elliott contract.
I think they see Micah hiding a lot of warts. In the Nickel, they can put LVE and Cox out there and let Micah move to DE.Exactly
You can’t have a “dog” mentality when you are being constantly run on and the QB has all day to throw so you can’t get off the field on third downs
We need DT, DE and MLB
I can only hope these guys understand that
Not without going into the top 10. I don't think he gets past the Giants unless they trade out of one of those top picks.Too many teams need WR’s with multiple picks in the first. We are not getting London.
My gut instinct tells me, no defense until day 3 based on what I have read/heard.
It’s going to be OL or WR most likely in the top 2 rds, of coarse depending on their board. Think edge might be the only position in defense they may go over these two areasThe first two rounds are opportunity picks IMO. You can want offense, but it may not be the best pick. Think about it, you know we're not taking QB, TE, or RB in the first couple of rounds. There is some debate on WR. So it's basically OL. In contrast, defense offers a wider range to pick from.
I'm just sayin', it's possible offense is just not there.
A clown show without McClay, thank god for WillLOL at thinking edge is covered so we have to go WR and TE first.
They really have zero clue what they are doing. 25 years and running.

Smith is an upgrade over Conner Williams, he will instantly improve our run game. You're right. But they didn't go edge over OL even though a clear pick was there for them to do so. They drafted to maintain status quo.

Many teams passed on Johnson as well. Heard media scouts much higher on him then the actual scouts. Smith is an upgrade over Connor Williams and we may have our future, starting LT. Status quo, would of been resigning Connor Williams and not upgrading the unit. They will still have plenty of picks to address defense, but we knew this class was going to be more offensive heavy. Outside of Gregory, whole defense is back, but on offense, they lost 3 starters.Quite possibly. And Jermaine Johnson could be all smoke and mirrors and suck to high heaven. I realize all of this. But it is still filling a need to get back to status quo. We hope he's better than that, but we won't know until he plays. Following this line of reasoning we'll take a WR in the 2nd.
I have no problem with the player picked. I like the player. But we could have (theoretically) improved the defense, then picked OL in the 2nd. Had him and Lloyd been off the board, I wouldn't be saying this. Not so much with Lloyd.
I mean 8 of 11 picks were on defense last season
Taco Charlton the year before which include the first 3 picks on defense (Awuzie, Lewis) then Byron Jones two seasons before that where we went defense 5 of the first 6 picks
Since 2012 (ten years) we've gone Defense 6 times to offense 4

I don't see us taking DE early unless Sam Williams falls same with DT and MLB.
I see us focusing on, OG, WR, TE, OC.
He had one of the best run grades in the entire nation. The biggest issue with him lies with pass protection. At least we hope so.
Me, I'm not ready to anoint a developmental player who has to learn OG at the NFL level competition over a serviceable vet.

Jerry did state he was 16th on their board, that doesn't seem like a reach taking him at 24. Several insiders had Tyler Smith as a 1st rd player, where others had completely different viewpoints. Several teams passed on Johnson from Florida State, even teams who needed pass rushers, something out there we aren't aware of. Could be character wise or even his medicals.I have Tyler Smith as an early 2nd round pick. Would they have taken Raimann if Smith was off the board? Kinnard if Raimann was off the board? When I say status quo, I'm not considering if the player was better than what we had. For all we know is he could be HOF. I just don't like seeing them pick a guy I had on the board at 38 over a guy at 9 that fell. Or Lloyd who was at 23. I'd rather improve an area we may be ok in, over reaching to fill a hole of need. I would have been ok with replacing Williams with a T in the 2nd round. Because that's what Smith is.
