Williams led the league in holding calls because he was too weak and had no anchor, so he had to hold. Smith is not weak and has a strong anchor, he just has poor technique. That can be fixed. Not saying that Philbin can do it, but the draft is about projecting what the player can become, not what he is.

So, year 4 of Williams being in the league he got weaker and had to hold? Or was it the hand technique/style that Philbin that brought in that caused him to be penalized more?
The first 3 years of Williams being in the league he had 6, 5, & 5 total penalties.
Then last year he had 14 accepted penalties.

I don't buy that Williams was too weak, unless he had an undisclosed injury hurting his play even more.

I'm not opposed to Smith as a prospect, but for a guy who will play guard to start here, I think we want a more rounded prospect. If this was a round 2 guy, sure, I'm fine with rolling the dice with his ceiling there.

But being strong as a bull is nice, but if his technique is poor he may win against the brute force guys that Williams struggled with but he can be a holding machine vs the quicker DTs.

Me likey too! 6'5", 305 and room for more. He'll go on a weight lifting regimen in the pros and maybe put a stop on the best NFL DE's.

Getting Charles Cross in round one would be outstanding. He's equally adept at both run blocking and blocking for the pass, also. :)

If our FO is willing to go wacko and make a bid for him, he'd be a likely choice to serve them for a long time. It'd be costly, though!
As long as have an oline heavy draft, I will be a happy camper.

It was well documented that that Green Bay taught their OLinemen a technique to is technically holding but that the refs generally won't call.

Connor Williams didn't have a holding issue until McCarthy and Philbin arrived.

It does give some credence to the conspiracy theories that teams like Green Bay get favorable treatment by the refs and that teams like the Cowboys & Raiders get penalized more than average.

The interesting concept with Connor Williams is that he was terrific against Aaron Donald.
- However, he struggled against 320+ no name DTs due to the power differential.
- CW has NFL LT foot quickness. His foot quickness is elite even compared to top NFL LTs.
- CW's struggles are one reason that I'm hesitant about Linderbaum.
- CW was very good with technique and awareness on picking up and passing off stunting/blitzing defenders.
- That's based the same description of Linderbaum. Great technique/awareness and foot quickness but can get over-powered by big DTs.

He's a gamble. He is raw and he did play at Tulsa. Can he plug in at guard year 1? I think I rather have Burks if these are my 2 choices. I can find a guard/tackle just as good in rd 2-3. I may not find a wr as good as Burks later. But I must say the wr depth is great this year. Its throwing darts,

HIs OL coach in college was a grad assistant 2 years ago...

TS is reportedly very intelligent and had a good Wonderlic score.

He was 20 years old when he last played...

It all depends on the team's evaluation of the person. If it's a coaching thing, he's worth a shot. But I'd hate to enter a Trysten Hill situation, where we are making assumptions to explain his poor performance.

good thoughts.i would love to trade down but i am not sure sure its feasible this year.i doubt the cowboys will trade out of RD 1 so they might have to trade to teams like KC.

There's plenty of room still left in the first round behind us. And KC is a very good option if they want a WR with one of their two picks.

I think Tyler Smith is the option if you've got nothing left as the other OL, DE and trade down targets dry up.

Maybe FO feels different, just my two cents.

Whether at 24 or in a trade down, I think he fits both a need (LG) and has the long-term potential and upside to replace Tyron at LT in a couple of years. He has all the physical traits you want and a nasty attitude. However he is raw with technique. Which can be hidden at LG and with his brute strength for the first year. He will be a work in progress, but can start year 1 and the clay is there to mold. Thoughts?

Congratulations. Well done.

Starting to get some wood now thinking about an interior line that CAN dominate.

I'd like to think that his penalties were largely due to mistakes in space that won't be nearly as much of an issue at guard.

In McClay I trust

Agreed! I was a little surprised by the pick just because he wasn't on my radar but that is not necessarily a bad thing!

I 100% trust McClay! The scouting department is not to blame for some of the team's failures the last 5 or so years!
