And replaced them with another and same coaches. I’m not saying kid can’t be good, I’m
Saying it’s poor drafting reaching for someone who exemplifies your bugaboos
I didn't love the pick at first.

I am still not totally convinced but I understand the thinking and do see the potential after looking into him more.

I love that he is big, strong, versatile and nasty. Those are things we absolutely need on our OL.

I hate the penalties but those can be cleaned up with technique. This isn't someone who will get pushed into the qb's lap...and he isn't someone who won't get push in the run game.

Those are all strong positives.

I don’t know how this player will end up. But a couple of things that I like hearing:

1. He’s nasty. Erik Williams type of player.
2. very physical. Glad he’s not a finesse player
3. Sounds like a road grader in the run game.
4. Larger player. Glad to hear he has some weight to really dig in in the trenches.

Negative:

Penalties and raw. With raw comes upside though.

I get you. I posted on the draft forum today that OL was my main love in 1. I just never thought it would be this guy. It’s not like I don’t want to be wrong. It’s just he exemplifies issues we’ve had

Kiper had the Cowboys taking him in his final mock. He also had him at the #33 "top prospect".

McShay had the Cowboys trading with the Texas to move up to #13 to pick an OT and had the Texans taking Smith @ #24 too.

Reid had him going at #39

Miller had him going at #19 to the Saints.

These are all of the top ESPN mock draft guys so most pundits shouldnt be too critical of this pick for what its worth...

Cowboys writer Nick Eatman had Smith as their 1st round pick today.
"I think the other writers might be right with Kenyon Green, but I went with Smith, who could be there in a trade-back scenario. He's played tackle but has the size to play guard now and eventually slide outside down the road. This is a pick for the short-term at guard and hopefully the long-term at tackle."

Apparently according to the FAN there was a lot of pre-draft smoke about Smith and the Cowboys. I guess in this case, where there's smoke, there was indeed a fire. Mel Kiper certainly picked it up, and you can even hear Steven A. mention it at the 4:30 mark of this First Take. (below)

One of the things that was brought up on the Fan draft show tonight was the ability of a team to have multiple (no limit?) pre-draft meetings with a kid within a 60-90 mile radius, which meant no team had a better opportunity to get to know Smith before the draft than the Dallas Cowboys. For whatever that's worth.

Let's hope he is EWilliams 2.0 and not CWilliams 2.0 ......I still think we need a legit LT to replace Smith when he misses his usual part of the season.

Again, project. You can try to discredit my opinion all you want, but I’m not wrong. There were a handful of players who would have made more of an impact in 2022. No spin job you try is going to change that.
The Cowboys suck anyways. Why you concerned about immediate impact?

Dude had to work his way up the Tulsa ladder. He’s inexperienced as hell. Sky is the limit.

I’m still trying to digest his comment that Smith grabs a lot and is a penalty waiting to happen. We just got rid of a player like that.
Here is DJ’s scouting report on Smith from last month.

Smith is a thick, explosive tackle prospect with tremendous upside. In the pass game, he has quick feet, powerful hands and plays with knee-bend. He has issues at times because he doesn’t stay square and hooks defenders with his outside arm, resulting in penalties. This is fixable. He is dominant in the run game. He can roll his hips on contact and finish with regularity. He has a nasty/violent play style. Smith has the tools to be an incredible guard, but I would give him a shot to stick at tackle. Overall, there are some rough areas to smooth out but this is a very gifted athlete with the right play temperament.

He better not be hooking defenders at the NFL level or we’ll have another penalty machine on our hands.

They have to find some way to try to generate some excitement for this utter dud of an offseason

+1 ......pretty much said this earlier. Fix his technique, most of the penalties will go away.

Jerry made sure to say he wasn’t any lower than 16th on their board. He said a couple of days ago they only have 14 to 16 players with first round grades. lol

I think guard is easier to play than tackle, so I would expect less hooks. I think he’ll do okay at guard because guard is more of a bench press position than heavy technique position like tackle. I can see Smith looking like Collins when he played guard once they coach him up.
