I’m Over It

My Problem is I'm not sure Philbin is the best OL coach.
He had Williams (2nd round pick) and McGovern (3rd) and couldn't do much with either.
Additionally Collins regressed as well, so I'm not hopeful.

While it may turn out to be ultimately true that Philbin ain’t the guy), in fairness to him, he got here in 2020. Connor Williams was drafted in 2018.

Also, there was no traditional off-season 2020, so there was time lost on the field for individual coaching and development.

I also don’t think Collins regressed. He had an injury and then had problems with availability getting suspended for skipping drug tests and the COVID issues. I believe the team likes Steele’s upside and availability better.

Philbin wasn’t here when McGovern was drafted. Garrett era.

Lol, then I don’t know what Broaddus is chirping about because he won’t shut up about his theory that Philbin is not a fan of McGovern and that it was a “scout’s” pick.

I mean, I guess the overall takeaway could still be true. McGovern was picked by the previous regime and Philbin is not a fan of the player or probably not a player he would have been pounding the proverbial table for had he been here in 2019.

If you are a good coach should it matter if the player was drafted before you arrived?

It does have potential to blow up in our faces. And again, this is the consequence of doing jack **** in free agency to address your glaring needs. And pretending you will 'build thru the draft' but then not being aggressive there either

We HAD to get a guard and got the last one left. Not ready to play? Who cares! We got one. Just like we HAVE to get a De and will force that pick too.

Meanwhile positions that also need improvement will be neglected, again.

Well, you already know they will be saying they “feel comfortable with the guys we have there,” meaning McGovern, and that they “aren’t done in free agency.”

I’m kinda thinking they may trade a mid-round pick for veteran OL help. At least it would make some sense for a team that’s maybe just drafted a starting caliber OG to replace an older pricier vet.

So McGovern would be OK at RG but so bad at LG that he gets benched?
I don't buy that.
That’s what the theory is. Notice last night Stephen said Smith is a left side player and Ball is a right side player. Remember Steele was terrible at LT but pretty good at RT. Don’t know why that is. I’m not an OL technique expert

If being a good coach was the only variable from a player developing there would be no bad players in the league because they would have all been “coached up.”

I do think Philbin probably has a voice in the room in terms of who they draft on the OL. Some guys they drafted that predate him may not have had certain traits he would have wanted had he been on staff. Sometimes you can’t fit a square peg through a round hole.

I just can't get on board with a project from a lower level of football in round 1, I truly hope he's an all pro in waiting but I just don't see it in anything I watch, he's out of control, terrible footwork and usage if hands, he got by on pure strength alone and I can't justify that at 24, ESPECIALLY when jermainejohnson falls into your lap.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they felt they had to force an OL

There are still some good tackles left, especially ones who play both G and T. As stated in another thread, we may not agree but I think they really like this kid. In other words, they apparently have no issues with the flaws fans are seeing.

I get what you’re saying.

I’m just trying to make this pick a good one through the sheer power of positivity, luuulz.

I know pal, I was in such a bad mood last night, woksup today feeling a touch better, I just got a feeling this is just the start of a really poor draft, if you have this guy as 16 on your board I'm worried how the rest stacks up...

They may have removed guys like Green due to medical and Johnson due to character. In a weak draft at the top it’s not that crazy to think he is 16. They said they only had 14 1st round grades

Let's be real here, not all coaches in the NFL are good NFL coaches.
I see three scenarios here.
1. The initial talent valuation was wrong and remember O Linemen drafted outside the 1st have not been a great success in Dallas.
2. Philbin is not a particularly good OL coach.
3. A combination of the two above

I favour the 3rd.

I could not believe this pick. Had so many high rated players in the board. Take a freaking 92 graded d end sitting there. If you did not want him had the 1/2 ranked inside linebackers sitting there. Had a top ranked outside line backer there. You had the number 2 ranked safety there. Take a position that could let them put parsons where they want or help diggs out. No they took a highly penalized player when they are by far the worse disciplined team in the league and have been for a long time. That’s probably more a culture thing and don’t see that changing so actually maybe he was the perfect fit there

Smith wouldn’t have been my first, second or third choice but if that’s who we wanted why not move back with a team that wanted Linderbaum or Johnson who both would have been better picks for us as well imo. Oh well the Jones boys like their projects so maybe in a couple two or three years Smith will develop.
