We have all watched with amazement the last two days as numerous NFL teams make big trades involving WRs requiring premium round draft picks. Many Cowboys fans are asking, “Why couldn’t we get more than a 5th for Amari Cooper?”

Two reasons:
  1. The big thing that happened lowering Cooper’s trade value was Stephen “Giggles” Jones opening his big mouth on the radio and in print and talking publicly about how hard it was going to be to keep Amari at $20 mil a season. He might as well have plastered that on billboards in every NFL city. “The Cowboys are parting ways with Cooper”, thus making it easy to hard bargain the Cowboys in a trade.Stupid, stupid, stupid.
  2. The smaller reason was Coop’s decline the last two years. He has only averaged about12 yds per catch the last two seasons, and last year only avg 57.7 yds per game. Not big time receiver stats.
The first reason was completely avoidable. Front office 101- never talk publicly to telegraph what you are going to do with a player. SJ is the laziest executive in the NFL.

Fellow Cowboys fans- if you don’t know it by now it’s obvious. The Jones FO is arrogant and stupid. A terrible FO combination. They talk constantly about things smart NFL FOs shut up about. Look at JJ last night flashing a copy of their draft board. It’s unparalleled stupidity and arrogance. Jerry has to “prove” to the NFL world he’s smarter than they are. And it’s so obvious he’s not.

In case you didn’t already know it- the emperor and his giggling son are naked.

Stephen Jones is an idiot. Never had to work hard in his life and doesn't care in the world because they own the Cowboys.

Sorry but the OP is a big misrepresentation of how the market works IMO.

Trade value doesn't 'plummet.' It's not like Jones does not say that and poof a team comes offering multiple picks but now that he has said something we only get a fifth.

While it is true that teams can sit there and say 'we can wait until they cut him,' once a team makes an offer they cannot afford to wait or they don't get Cooper. At the end of the day, no team wanted to offer more than the Browns.

Trends show that athletes typically peak at age 27. Amari Cooper is 27, is well into his second contract, been hurt with lesser production the past two years and has a history of injuries and inconsistent play dating back to Oakland.

the question is why did the yards per catch go down system or decline?

And Coop’s production the last two years has dropped. His YAC this year was less than Dalton Schultz, Cedric Wilson, Tony Parker and even Zeke! He’s still good, but not elite.

Foot front office 101: Never make it obvious who you want to get rid of so you can keep their value high for return value.
That’s somewhat irrelevant. I’m
Not saying it doesn’t matter. But if the Chiefs decided they wanted to part with Mahomes do you think teams would be lined up for him or not? You know they would.

We get it bro! They’re still the front office, they’re still the GM and they’re still the owners. Nothing is going to change so why waste your time?!

JJ interviews last night were the royal court show inside the Dallas kingdumb.

Cooper wasn't all that good to begin with.

Neither is Lamb and he still went 17th overall a couple years ago. Cooper is going to look worse than he is this year though, catching passes from a severely disenfranchised and overrated Crybaby Baker.

I don’t have a problem with the front office announcing they weren’t keeping Cooper. It starts a bidding war. When you’re selling a house you don’t keep it quiet. The problem is Cooper isn’t that good or his production/consistency isn’t worth the money which is why Dallas didn’t want him. Cooper is more of a really good #2 now.

Poor Stevie Jones has a knack for inviting trouble! If an apple ever fell close to the family tree, it was he!
Every time he opens his mouth horrible things inevitably come of it. Maybe one blessed day, he'll grow up?!

Good point on the age, but if Dallas would have done their restructures / releases and just sat on Cooper while letting it be known they were open to a trade they could have received a much better offer. Their telegraphing hurt them a bit and trying to disparage Cooper in the media was worked against them, but it think it was more the timing and not being patient. They jumped on what they could get immediately.

I would reverse those reasons. Suitors will show up for a player they are really high on, and if teams were really high on Cooper they wouldn’t want to wait to see if he was released then have to compete with every other team to sign him.

And, realistically, it wasn’t a revelation to the rest of the NFL that the contract would be an issue with the Cowboys keeping him. Saying it publicly didn’t tell NFL teams something they didn’t already know, and it would be a topic in any trade discussions anyway.

I suspect lowering evaluations of Cooper across the league was really the main culprit.

Dak refused to target him. Whether that was because of Kellen and play calling or not remains to be seen.
That’s a perception that’s not really true. Cooper’s targets in 2020 were 113; in 2021 they were 107. Both years he was second on the team in total targets. In 2019, Coop had 119. So his target numbers were pretty close in all 3 of his full seasons here.

What changed were his yards per reception. The last two years were only about 12 yds per reception which is possession receiver type numbers, not a dynamic receiver. Even more problematic were his YAC numbers. He finished behind Lamb, Schultz, Ced Wilson, Pollard, and Zeke in YAC. That’s not good for receiver getting that kind of cap space.
