CFZ The main reason Cooper’s trade value plummeted

The problem is that it was known that the cowboys were going to possibly CUT him, making it so that teams have no incentive to hurry up and try to nab him because they could potentially get him without having to give up many draft picks or any playeres.

When he refused to renegotiate they had to cut him or trade him. Everybody knew Dallas was in a bad spot as regards the cap. If anything, finding themselves in that situation is more to blame than answering a reporter's question about Cooper's future.

Coop’s still a good player. He’s just not elite. Cleveland restructured his contract so it was clear even to them he wasn’t worth being paid at the same level.
I still feel a part of that was the play calling or lack there of or... Dak. It will be interesting to see how he does in Clev where he'll be the clear-cut #1 for Watson.

We have all watched with amazement the last two days as numerous NFL teams make big trades involving WRs requiring premium round draft picks. Many Cowboys fans are asking, “Why couldn’t we get more than a 5th for Amari Cooper?”

Two reasons:
  1. The big thing that happened lowering Cooper’s trade value was Stephen “Giggles” Jones opening his big mouth on the radio and in print and talking publicly about how hard it was going to be to keep Amari at $20 mil a season. He might as well have plastered that on billboards in every NFL city. “The Cowboys are parting ways with Cooper”, thus making it easy to hard bargain the Cowboys in a trade.Stupid, stupid, stupid.
  2. The smaller reason was Coop’s decline the last two years. He has only averaged about12 yds per catch the last two seasons, and last year only avg 57.7 yds per game. Not big time receiver stats.
The first reason was completely avoidable. Front office 101- never talk publicly to telegraph what you are going to do with a player. SJ is the laziest executive in the NFL.

Fellow Cowboys fans- if you don’t know it by now it’s obvious. The Jones FO is arrogant and stupid. A terrible FO combination. They talk constantly about things smart NFL FOs shut up about. Look at JJ last night flashing a copy of their draft board. It’s unparalleled stupidity and arrogance. Jerry has to “prove” to the NFL world he’s smarter than they are. And it’s so obvious he’s not.

In case you didn’t already know it- the emperor and his giggling son are naked.

The Cowboys did an awful job promoting a Cooper trade. They could have just leaked they were open to exploring a trade and see what happened, but frankly they wanted ro clear cap for free agency and ran short on time. Same thing with Collins. Even if they're declining can't let productive players in their prime years get away for nothing.

...but at this point, they are around 15 mill in space. I just think they could have made all the same cap space moves (DLaw, Dak, etc) and then wait till draft to make a better trade. Could have easily gotten at least a third during the draft for him.

I think the timing due to the fact that they had guaranteed money coming due and had to move on from him was the difference.

The entire NFL knew the Titans wanted to move on from AJ Brown yet they still got a 1st and 3rd for him.
I just listened to an interview with a guy who covers the Titans and he said the exact opposite - no one knew about Brown. Even Vrabel didn't know. That's why he publicly guaranteed on the Rich Eisen show that Brown was NOT going to be traded, and it's why he was so upset when the trade was announced. I don't follow the Titans so I don't know what the truth is, but this guy sounded like a solid source.

LOL, Fans crack me up. Dallas was trading or releasing Amari.
The NFL world knew that LONG before Cheapie chirped in.
That card was dealt when Dallas allowed him to play for the full base salary the prior two years but especially the 20M last year.
Amari himself knew it and his agent knew it and every NFL team knew it.

Amari's draft value was nil because he's played a lot of NFL football and his body has taken then shown that wear and tear.
He wasn't a regular practice participant last year and has been declining in performance as CeeDee ascended.
Dallas got stretched out on his deal because other teams, see WFT, were ready to overpay.
So they paid him 2 years and 40m for ok performance.
Cooper was a luxury item that was declining in value and Dallas wanted the cap space.

Perhaps Cooper goes out next year and proves the world he's a top 15 guy still. But last year he was 34th in catches. 33rd in receiving yards and tied for 40th in receiving TDs.
The year before wasn't really elite either. 11th in receptions, 14th in yards, tied for 44th in TDs. For that he is 8th in cash payout at WR in 2022.
31 NFL teams had to compete for Amari. Any one team wanting him meant 30 others had a number to beat and Dallas told the world they'd take a 3rd for him, maybe a 4th.
No one bit.
Perhaps Amari isn't actually worth to the league what he is to the fan base.

But who knows. DeShaun Watson, if eligible is a heck of a QB, and Cooper is easily WR1 in CLE.

As things go, Amari gets what he wants in a true WR1 job with associated target preference and Dallas gets 20M AAV off its book.
If that pick today becomes of note anything at all it is icing on the cake.

The first reason was everything. Based on what we saw, Cowboys should have gotten a 2nd rounder. But when you tell everyone you are cutting him, its over.

Cooper and his 22 million collard salary would actually have been a discount on what these other guys are getting.

Man I really appreciate your posts. You are a great poster. But if you think the entire NFL doesn’t know the second part of your post, you are missing the boat. The first part is largely irrelevant.

If a player is worth a lot, teams will bid against each other for that player. If not they won’t.

I dont agree. If you are telling the market that you think the player is worthless and you will probably cut him.............why would anyone offer you something of high value for him? You have already set the market very very low.

These same Bozo’s did the same with Dak’s negotiations, Zeke before that, on and on. I’m actually embarrassed by them. When they show the war room on TV they look like imbeciles sitting in that room. Everyone else has just an office and we have to have this stupid evil looking empire room.

Not really
His contract is why he didn’t have great trade value on top of the fact he’s now on his 3rd team for a reason and it ain’t talent

A lot of the ills the Cowboys continue to face season after season would be cured if the Joneses just kept their mouths shut and stayed out of the spotlight.

Cooper will have a bounce back year because they will consistently feed him the ball which is not what the Dak led cowboys do at all.

He should and I am pulling for him.

I just feel come December, in Cleveland, snow on the ground and he will check out. Cooper seems to disappear in the cold
Ha that’s funny maybe there’s something to that, maybe he’s the kind of guy you line up in the backfield to get a toss early in the game to keep his spirits high, he definitely always looks stoic/mopey

Thanks for the good post Bob.
I agree with you, mostly on point #1.
Truth.
My question on #2 is how much of that may also be on Dak and Moore?
A few years ago, Moore seemed like he was an innovative offensive mind, the last 2, not so much.
I'm sure you watched the Kurt Warner video on the Noners playoff loss.
It blew me away (seemed to blow Kurt away too, lol).
We kept calling the same plays, over and over, that were not working. The Niners had good tape and had us figured out, and Moore had no answer.
Kurt also subtly called out Dak. There was one play, near the end of the game, where we came to the LOS and the Niners were is 4 deep zone. The called play was to run one WR, deep, into each of the 4 zones. The absolute wrong play for this defense.
Dak did not change the play, as he should have seeing this D.
So I think scheme had a lot to do with Coops decline, and lack or targets. (I believe Coop was 89th is WR targets)
We will see IMO, if Watson plays, and the Browns use Amari like a true #1.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Coop put of huge numbers, and his salary will look like a bargain in light of some of these new WR contracts.
IMO, Coop is yet another great example of asset mismanagement.
I would have restructed him, and if you wanted to trade him later build his value so you get a good asset in return.

20+ million for a 865 yard WR was there for all to see.

You can't force teams to offer more than a 5th AND take that on.

tis far better and agree more then BOB and his cronies making these statements when we have seen many NFL players announce they want out and be traded..AC didn't have the value over his deal, his chronic foot and other issues ie can disappear at timed. No matter what Jones said AC didn't have enough value..

maybe at best if they held out and hoped for 4th possibly but it isn't over SJ announcing heir plans happens al over the NFL.

If the cap was stagnant, you'd be right, but it is not.
The Cap is set to EXPLODE.
It is expected to increase as much as 40 mil next season, and hit 308 mil by 2026, just a few years from now.
20 mil on a 200 cap is top of the market. 20 mil on a 300 cap is not.
Look at the WR contracts that have been signed this year. Hill got 30, Adams close to that.
Coop was I believe #2 last year. This year he currently sits ties at 10th. . 7 WRs have passed him this offseason.
This will only continue. Next year he may not even be top 20 in compensation.
I don't necessarily agree with the "next man up sets the market" contract situation in the NFL, but it is real.

brown got less he was last but 25 is not the new market. well if no team needs to worry about the cap explain why the packers and chiefs allowed their best WR top 3 players on their team walk instead of giving them a max new market deal? same with the titans? if that caps not real why do teams trade way greet payer in the peak of their careers?

AC is not gone just because of money, its $ vs production vs attitude he disappeared in many games some with his foot issues other his lack of motivation, especially the biggest games of late, missed those 2 games last year and IMO for 22 mil player doesn't score enough TDs that's elite money with just being very good player..
