Least favorite - Matt Waletzko

I just know nothing about him yet.

Favorite - Jalen Tolbert

This guys floor is a good #3 receiver. His ceiling isn't a #1, but it's a pretty good #2 and getting that in the 3rd round is money.

In regards to Smith - it's how the board fell. High ceiling, but also bust potential. If they can hit on him and Williams, with a safe bet in the 3rd and a lotto ticket LB in Clark - this draft could be pretty huge.

Don’t know who to give credit to but someone had a post on the main zone calling this draft this class a “shopping list” which I think nails it.
Tolbert in the 3rd seems like the only pick where they had to look at a draft board and pick the best guy, all other rounds seemed almost predetermined. It’s not even that I dislike the players that were picked, it’s more about going into any draft with such a rigid strategy. I think this class could have been better if the front office was willing to pivot and take the best players available rather than fill needs.

The lack of aggression was also annoying. While almost every other team was aggressive in acquiring talent, out front office sat back with their “we like our guys” mentality. I think that aggression could/should have been used to move up and take a much better prospect than Ferguson

My favorite pick by a mile was Damone Clark. I also like Jalen Tolbert, he's a small-school guy who definitely looks ready for more.

Least favorite was Tyler Smith. High-risk pick at a low-impact position. If you want an interior OL, the best center in years is sitting there. If you want high-impact BPA talent, Jermaine Johnson is also there. Passing on both for a project guard was bizarre.

Favorite: Williams. To me getting a guy who is a potential 10 sack player in the 2nd round is a win

Least favorite: Ferguson. He just looks like a poor mans Shultz to me. They should have been more aggressive and pursues someone like Otton or Kolar

Honorable mention favorite: Ridgeway. Good two down utility late in the draft. Ridgeway had 39 tackles last year. Bohanna had 58 in 4 years at Kentucky.

Honorable metion least favorite: Smith. Not so much the player, but passing on a top 15 pick caliber edge rusher to take him
Smith is my favorite, reminds me of a young Leary with healthy knees.

Damone is my least favorite. Cheering for the kid but like Jaylon I could see the board getting pumped up on his workout videos. Then we gets on the field he will be afraid to hit someone. A fused neck just scares me.

In order as I like the picks (not teh player) and why:

Favorite-
Ridgeway love his toughness and nastiness, been screaming for this for years, could be the real missing piece on the D-line.

Smith I don't understand the Smith hate, dude is a big nasty that will dominate as a LG, plus he has all the tools to potentially become a very good OT. I love the value that brings to the team. Sure according to the experts it was a reach at 24, but so was Fred beard. Who became an all pro. You can't always listen to the pundits, sometimes you just got to go with the raw ballers who fit your needs.

Clark stud LB taken that late could be the steal of this draft if he comes back 100%

Waletzko is a guy I had on my radar as a possible late rd steal. Again, all the tools to be a really good OT for us, just needs some coaching and time to gain some strength. I think between him and Smith we may have our OT's of the future, if they get coached.

Tolbert is decent, still needs some refining. At 88 he was a good selection, just felt like we needed a more pro ready player.

Ferguson is a good TE prospect too. He is ok at blocking and has good hands. Can see him replacing Shults if we lose him.

Bland has the traits they want for a CB so we will how he develops. Decent option that late of a pick at the position.

Harper ST and back LB that can make the team and that's all you can really hope for from a late rd pick.

least favorite- Williams I just don't see it with him, he has some traits but IMO a big reach at 56. At 88 sure, there are things you can work with and build on. I hope he makes the jump we need him to!

Favorite- Williams

Least- Bland because I don't see him starting and even UDFA Issiac Taylor- Stuart might beat him out....Taylor- Stuart ran 4.42 at his pro day but coming out of high school he ran a 4.26 forty.

Favorite: DE De (formerly Sam) Williams

Least: OT Tyler Smith

- Willliams is lightning fast off the edge and produced high number of sacks his final year . Parson like physical specimen in 2nd rd is great value.
- Like it or not, Tyler feels like a developmental project in the first round, so we reach than found value.
Flaws can be limited at guard

I feel content with most of the picks
JJones gambler trait i think was focused in this draft from the back we got wiped out again but but Steam Boat Willie drew the right card and we got Smith my favorite left on the board.
We didn’t have nearly the best draft but our opponents knew we got in some licks.
I dont know enough to have a least favorite.

I prefer meat and potatoes drafts, heavy on the lines, which it was so that was to my liking.

Favorite: Ridgeway. This team has been getting run on far too long. Also like that between the lines has a kill or be killed mentality, something this team has lacked as long as I can remember. Lets hope he represents improvement in those regards.

Least: Bland, a traits guy from a lesser conference. Feels like they draft one or two of these types every year hoping for the best but getting minimal returns. I expect his special teams play to be his ticket to make the team and be active game days.

Most likely to not be on the roster in three years: Waletzko. Feels like the last small school traits O Lineman they hit on was Larry Allen. Has been mostly a parade of disappointment since with those types.

My favorite pick is Smith. The Cowboys instantly have the 2 best OG's in the NFL once Smith is ready to step into the starting lineup.

He will be light years better than Williams and the running game will be amazing. And that will make Dak better.

Favorite: T. Smith - He is as mean and physical an OL as I’ve seen in a long, long time. He wants to demolish his defender and backs down from no one. I know that people view him as a project, but I don’t see him that way at all. People are parroting that take because many of the draft experts were saying that… but I think they were saying that for Smith as an OT. His penalty issues were almost all because he would get beat around the edge. Playing inside at guard he won’t have those issues. The defender will need to go through him to get to the QB or anchor down to stop the run game… both of which will be damn near impossible against Smith.

Smith is a very smart guy, likes to punish his opponent, loves to play football and plays with a demeanor that has been lacking too long from the Dallas offense. He has great feet and athleticism, and I simply don’t really see him as a project at LG. Does he have some things he needs to learn? Of course he does, but he’ll start game one as one of the strongest, most athletic, most aggressive guards in football who is going to bring toughness and attitude to the Dallas front. I don’t think that he’ll struggle much to play LG and he isn’t going to have any issues with big DT’s. He’s a bully, and I love it.

I very much think that there is a focused effort by Dallas to increase the desire, toughness and the physicality on the team. I think that trading Cooper and Collins is part of that process. IMO, it definitely wasn’t all just about money with those two. Cooper was all finesse and no toughness or desire, while Collins I feel like was just earning a paycheck. Letting Connor Williams go was too. Not physical nor aggressive enough. That was step one, and I feel like getting a guy like Smith (and Waletzko) is just the next step in their effort to get toughness back on the team.

This draft is a very good start in that direction.

Least favorite: Damone Clark - I could end up with my foot in my mouth here, but I just don’t like the thought of a LB with fused vertebrae in his neck. It just seems like too much damaged goods. I’m aware that he would’ve likely been a second round pick without the injury and I admit that he could make me look foolish… but I would have just gone with a player that wasn’t recovering from a surgery like that.

Of course, I’d much rather use a 5th than a second on a risk/reward like this, so I’m not freaking out about it or anything.

Honorable mention favorite: Waletzko - while he lacks the physical strength of Smith, he lacks none of the aggression and toughness that Smith brings. Waletzko is a project but I love getting that in the 5th round. He has great athleticism and moves extremely well for a big guy. He will arrive in Dallas with the feet and movement skills of a starting LT. He will need to add strength and experience, which he will spend a year doing… but the guy definitely has the ability to become a good LT. And again, he has the attitude and aggression that Dallas is wanting up front in the trenches, which is something you can’t teach the players. Waletzko’s demeanor and play style is exactly what you want. He will compete at a high level and I won’t be surprised if he does end up as the swing tackle as a rookie.

Very good 5th round pick, IMO.

Honorable metion least favorite: DaRon Bland - Truly, I have nothing against Bland but I don’t see a real good chance for him to squeeze out a roster spot. I think the developmental CB’s on the team already will end up taking the roster spot from Bland. However, I do admit that I could be wrong on him and he make the team.

——————-

I could have given the honorable mention favorite to WR Tolbert or DT Ridgeway very easily. I loved both of those picks, which I feel were very good value where they were taken. I think that both will get playing time this season and that both will help in 2022.

Ridgeway’s toughness and physical nature also fit’s right in with the Cowboys efforts to bring in bullies along the lines… and Tolbert’s love of the game and physical play gives the WR’s a little more toughness as well.

I feel like this draft will go a long way towards helping Dallas build a team that is better prepared to go toe-to-toe with teams in the post season. It is, IMO, just what Dallas needs.
