A great OT that you can have for 12-13 games still has a ton of value in this league. Anyone suggesting it's time to cut bait is too stupid to talk on this subject.

Pretty much my take. Hopefully some of the youngsters develop to the point where we don't have to rush him back from any dings he gets and we aren't rolling him out there in a wheelchair. If he gets hurt, bit the bullet and sit him until he's as close to 100% as one can get in the middle of a season. Same really goes for all the guys frankly.

That's fine....but would you agree that we saw a "decline" in several critical players? Dak? Zeke? any others?

I'm looking at the bigger picture here, if this is true...very concerning! Just coincidence? Or systemic health issue?

Well both Dak was coming off a serious injury and Zeke was banged up. Both suffered due to the O-Line's decline, which started with Tyron's injury and exacerbated by playing him when not 100%.

You can tell most in this thread only pay attention to Dallas.

Every top LT misses games.

Go look at Trent Williams who is the best LT in the game and just got a new contract making him the highest paid.

Go look at the top paid guys and how many games they have played.

You don't throw these guys away--especially when they have a good contract like Smith.

Clearly Cowboys Zoners do.. cause you know.. they grow on trees.. just go pick a new one when the old one breaks down..

You don't get physically better with age unless you're a child.
And when you age, trouble in one part of your body affects another part of your body.
I give Tyron Smith two more years tops.
He's a warrior, but even warriors must retire from the battle field.

I've gotta say I'm extremely reluctant to "dis" Tyron in any way. He's been a heroic member of this team for a very long time. Through no fault of his own, he's gotten longer in the tooth these days than he once was. Mother Nature takes her toll on all of us, given time to do so. He's hanging in there nowadays and when he's at his best, he's still very good. When the wear and tear of so many years confound him, he's less than he once was. Hopefully, when that's the case, one of our current backup OT candidates will step up to save the day. We could surely be in worse shape than we are now at LT. The good news is that there are hopefully those in place to take up the slack when he can no longer be our LT stalwart. That's encouraging in itself. ;)

For three years his issue was the neck which he tried to play through. Once that was fixed he was good to go.. until Pollard happened. I think he plays at least 16 games this year..
One can only hope, right? I’d love for that to be true but history would disagree with you.

Sorry but guys like zeke, smith, and d law are making too much for their production. I'm done giving high dollar guys passes for not playing up to their contracts.

We don’t need to get sentimental over aging players that cost more than they’re worth. What good is Top 10 skill if you aren’t available?

It's not about sentimentality, it's about understanding what's going on outside your Cowboys bubble. Trent Williams is older and missed more time than Smith & just got the contract for the highest paid LT in the league.

Green Bay's guy missed games. Tunsil misses games.

Smith has only 2 seasons where he's missed more than 3 games.

Absolutely -- that sums it up quite aptly, in as few words as possible. Kudos for your astute observation!

I don’t think he I nearly the player that he used to be. I think it’s rose colored glasses thinking he is still a top flight offensive tackle.

Before getting hurt he was rated 2nd behind Trent Williams. He was playing very well.

A lot of people have been trying to bury the guy for the last 2-3 years.. but lest we forget, if Tony Pollard doesn't get knocked into his leg he very likely plays all 17 games last season. The neck and elbow both held up fine. Pollard's ..er.. lack of ...er... prowess blocking is often cited as the main reason the coaches trotted one legged Zeke out there the last 10-11 games of the season. Not just to protect Dak, but maybe to protect our offensive linemen from Pollard.. Pollard has certainly gotten better each year as a blocker.. but that play were the dude threw him into Tyron's legs is a recurring nightmare.. He's got a ways to go and really needs to get better, especially if Moore is going to insist on throwing the ball 50 times a game.
13-14 games from smith is much better than 17 from almost anyone else
That said it’s getting time to look at a replacement and I expect tackle to be a high pick next year
Also Steele is due a contract soon

That's fine.. but I remember a lot of people popping off about how Demarcus Ware was "done" and we needed to move on from him. Then Denver somehow managed to squeeze two more reasonably productive seasons out of him by being smart about how they used him. Tyron may be done playing full seasons.. but I hesitate to declare him completely done.

Wow...you don;t see the forum...or ANYBODY, really... referencing Teddy Pendergrass these days. My compliments!

It’s the first time I’ve seen Teddy Pendergrass referenced on this site and it happens in the Fan Zone in a thread about Tyron Smith.

Love Tyron, dude is still impressive to watch when he’s all there, but Zack is the last stalwart of that great offensive line we enjoyed in the 10’s, mainly due to injuries not age when it comes to Tyron. My greatest rebuilding fear was always that offensive line. We hit gold on three freaking drafts. That’s very unusual. It’s hard to replace that. Everyone wants to blame Philbin, blame player like Steele who was nowhere near first round talent, Or blame Zeke’s decline, but bottom line is that was one of the best offensive lines, if not the best, of last decade, and you don’t just come back from that. No one will ever give Garrett credit for establishing that line. He tried his best to bring back the formula for that 90s dynasty, and that’s really all he repeated which was one hell of an offensive line and running game. I do see stuff like Whitworth on the Rams and know anything is possible. If we’re going to get as much faded glory back as possible, Spending a first round pick on the Oline again this year was the first step to supporting it.

I think Tyron’s best years are behind him. The main difference between Tyron and Ware was cap cost. Tyron’s contract is very team friendly. Ware’s would not have been in the same class.

I think most people were not surprised that Ware played a couple of more decent years. It’s that long term his contract was more of a liability than an asset.

I really don’t think Tyron has that much left.

This is by far your most laughable excuse yet in your defense of the slow and plodding zeke.

He was still gimpy.. He missed games because of a high ankle sprain and tried to come back .. He wasn't nearly himself those last two games hobbling around. I think he gets back closer to peak Tyron this year if we can just keep Pollard away from his legs.

P.S. If you think the 49ers defensive front was "no names" you need to watch more football.
And we all know what big game zeke did in the niners game. Nothing.
