It was the Cowboys doctor who diagnosed Clark with a herniated disk

The wonderlic is about common sense. You don't need common sense to track and attack the ball carrier. All you need is instinct. This guy's tape says he's an early rounder, that's all I need to know. They took a chance hopefully it pays off.

Logically if a player was good and was injured a team would check and see if he could eventually play. They would assume he would be back to normal or close enough to risk a second on him.
But Jaylon was a great player.
Logically, if you're going to spend a second round pick on a player, you want some indication that player will be back to what he is capable of.
Otherwise, why not pick him in a lower round?
This is done all the time, which is why Damone Clark was drafted in the fifth round when he was initially projected in the second.
Simply put, the Cowboys knew his talent was in the second round but because of injury, they chose him in a lower round. If they were confident about his injury and his recovery, they would have chosen him higher.
Similarly, the Cowboys doctors must have let them know that Jaylon was going to return to the player he was. Otherwise, if they had not, the Cowboys would not have taken him that high. So, from my perspective, the doctors didn't let Jerry and crew know he would be back from his injury but that he would be back as the same player he was before the injury.
Otherwise, the Cowboys would have taken him lower.
It doesn't make sense to gamble a first or second round pick on a blue-chip player you're not sure will return to blue-chip status.
Then again, Jerry loves taking reclamation projects in the second round. Sigh.

Are you wondering how he got a Wonderlic score of 9 too?
Trying to figure out if he would of just went undrafted and then sign him then or spend a 6:7 pick on him but what do we know Jerry is the best lls

This may have been mentioned already. From Bob McGinn.

5. DAMONE CLARK, Louisiana State (6-2 ½, 239, 4.60, 3-7): After backing up Devin White in 2018 and Patrick Queen in ’19, he started in the middle the past two years. “Big, long-armed (33), athletic and fast,” said one scout. “His instincts are a touch off. They were off two years ago and improved since then. Very productive; he was a bright light in a dark room at LSU this past season. As the season sunk he just kept playing and got better. Reluctantly, he could do it (wear the green dot).” At the combine, one of the Cowboys’ team doctors diagnosed him with a herniated cervical disc. On March 24, he underwent a fusion through the front of his neck and won’t play in 2022. “There’s no way he goes first- or second-round now,” the scout said. “He’s going to sink like a rock.” Finished with 249 tackles (23 ½ for loss) and 10 sacks. “He was the No. 1 (linebacker),” said a second scout. “Not as talented as Devin White but he was all over the place. Just makes plays. Explosive as hell. He can cover and blitz. He’s a Pro Bowl linebacker. He’ll stack. Strikes people. They man him up a lot. He was amazing.” Wonderlic was 9. “Good man (cover) on running backs,” said a third scout. “Inconsistent tackler in space more due to technique than skill. Can have delayed reactions at times. Probably can play all three positions but you might be a little hesitant to put him at Mike based on the mental. Very talented. He’ll start.” From Baton Rouge, La. “I guess you could draft him late or sign him as a college free agent and pay him for the year and see how the surgery goes,” a fourth scout said. “Just redshirt him. But a linebacker with a fused neck? I don’t know.”

Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

Pretty clever of Jerry. Yeah you need surgery, kid. My God this is terrible. Hey, do we have your contact info for the draft? Okay. Tough break.

Ok my dad had this surgery and is in pain even after the surgery. thats cool we took a flyer on the guy but really we could have just signed him a UDFA and used the pic on someone else. he's more than likely NOT going to play football at the same way as before the surgery due to A. worry about breaking his neck and being paralyzed. and B. just whiffing on tackles due to A

Agreed but then again Jaylon probably soured them on doing it again so early. Plus different coaching staff. It's alot of things that go into those decisions

This is the same surgery that Tyron and LVE have had I believe and they both have said that it’s night and day now. Hopefully he heals quickly

Didn't the Cowboys doctor do Jaylon Smith's surgery and was confident in a full recovery.

“I’m perfectly fine,” Clark explained. “The only thing that I can’t do is contact to the neck and head area.”

Unfortunately that’s a huge norm and hazard at his position. Good luck, hope it pays off, but not banking on this pick at all.

He's talking right now a month after surgery. He can have contact in five more months.

I'm going to have to call "Shenanigans!" on this.

If he can come back at where he was, then I think we got a better NFL player than Dean who I don't think will look as great in the NFL.

Good for him that he's playing behind Davis.

Yikes. Is that true? A 9?

To score that badly you can't have done the test properly. It suggest to me that he turned up and put "A" for every question as he's gotten just under 1 in 5 questions correct on a multiple choice test.
