The Dallas Cowboys were not shy about their desire to land a top receiver in the draft, but in the end, the team opted not to trade up instead selecting Tulsa offensive lineman Tyler Smith at No. 24. Locked on Cowboys’ Marcus Mosher reported the team attempted to move up on draft night to land USC wideout Drake London, Ohio State receiver Chris Olave or Mississippi State’s offensive lineman Charles Cross.

“Again, some of this is based off what we’re hearing and behind-the-scenes stuff, but the Cowboys were looking to trade up for Drake London or Charles Cross,” Mosher explained on the April 28 edition of “Locked On Cowboys.”Drake London goes eight, it’s far too high to trade up. Charles Cross goes nine to Seattle, I believe, too far to trade up. At that point, at least it seemed like the Cowboys were going to be patient and wait.

"Tried trading up" probably overstates things. Sounds more like they anticipated that London or Cross could slide and were prepared to try to trade up and grab them if that happened. As it turned out they were both picked in the top 10, which is not a range the Cowboys were looking to move up to, so the Cowboys never made any effort to move up.

They apparently put in a trade off to move up to get Olave but they took the Saints offer.

Exactly. If 8 and 9 were too high, we never 'tried' to trade up. Most likely 'would have tried' had one of those guys fell into the teens.

If we were intent on going OL in 1st round we could have moved up to like 15 and taken our top OL on our board Kenyon Green from Texas A&M who went to Houston.

I wonder what OL we could have drafted in 2nd round if we had taken DE Johnson in 1st round ?

And If Smith was still there in 2nd round we could have moved up to get him then.

That to me would have been best case scenario.

Is called doting your "I's" and crossing your "T's". The Cowboys searched for trade partners before the draft just so they could know what's actually available. I'm sure they looked into trading up and trading down. So there's no real story here because they look for trade partners like this every year.

In no way am I a fan of this front office, but I have no issue with them investigating a trade up to see if they can improve the roster. Keep in mind that in 1990, the Cowboys tried to trade up multiple times to get Ray Agnew, then James Francis before they did trade up to get Emmitt Smith. Can you imagine if the trade offer to move up for either of those guys were accepted and they ended up with Agnew or Francis instead of Smith?

We should only worry about what the actual outcome was, and not what didn't end up happening. Because, at the end of the day, that's all that matters.

Given the run on WR I can see why, 6 WR taken in the 1st rd. Glad they did not take WR but given the run on the position I do get why they may have looked to move up

This is what happens when you basically give away a top 20 WR in the league for absolutely nothing.

Nothing? We cleared out massive space on the cap space. You guys complain about Cooper contract and yet now can't seem to understand why the let him go. Cowboys needed the cap relieve

Yes I heard the same about Olave, but the Saints put together a better package. I'm happy we didn't cut Coop just to trade up and burn more picks for a WR.
