If he can win the center battle, all the weak links from the OLine will be gone assuming Tyler Smith wins the LG job and there can be a power run game again.

And now Ryan Nall is coming to take the FB job from McGovern . Cut down to 53 might be a tight squeeze for Route 66 this Sept .

That's trouble. Why have an incompetent backup?
Are you confused about starters vs backups? Let me break it down for you. The starters should be better players than the backup. End of lesson.

Generally speaking (not saying the original poster is one, to be clear), when posters here complain that a player is "terrible" they do it because they expected too much from him. McGovern's draft profile, in an overall sense, was "Will Eventually Be Average Starter".

While it's disappointing that he's not gotten there, it's not like he should have been expected to be another Martin or Smith or even a Collins. And it's just as likely he won't eventually be a starter. His draft profile in specific areas showed a lot of shortcomings. Basically, his upside was that he was big and strong, and he had played center and guard in college. That's a long way from being an NFL starter.

I have expressed doubts about our new draftee Tyler Smith, (and been roundly criticized for it, which I get) while many are all atwitter about his "nastiness" and "power", which is great, but conveniently ignore his many technical faults, especially the extremely high penalty rate. For despite the NFL, and football in general, being full of very strong people ignores the fact that most everybody is very strong, Smith isn't going to overpower guys like Aaron Donald or Fletcher Cox, e.g. on a regular basis. He has to have the footwork, etc. to be a top starter in the league.

McGovern hasn't gotten to where he needs to be, but we can't count on every 3rd rounder to be just as we hoped for...

It would be a disaster to go into the season with him as our starting LG IMO. But, I'm fine with him as a backup especially since we are told he is better as a RG than LG. He can play a little of that FB role and he also plays some STs snaps. Also can be an emergency center. Good player to have on the bottom of the roster IMO.

Steele played great, until the brilliant coaching staff moved him. Collins, should have never been inserted in his spot.
Great aint it lol. He went from the worst graded tackle per pff in 2020 to average at best. Hes not that good. Lael was better than him. They got rid of lael for personal reasons not because of his play.

McGovern is terrible but if you go back when we drafted him a lot of fans loved the pick. Some were making bold predictions that he would become a pro bowl player. We could be seeing a thread like this about Tyler Smith in three or four years.

We overdrafted him, plain and simple. 4th rd pick at best and really should’ve been a 5th.

Yes, I could not, and still do not understand that pick. Thought the same of Williams at OG though also at the time when he was drafted.

Just like Chaz Freaking Green - dude was a 5th at best and really a 6th.
