No clue about this type of surgery......will it impact his career?

https://www.si.com/nfl/2022/05/03/maqb-deandre-hopkins-future-in-doubt-after-suspension

• While we’re there, LSU’s Damone Clark was another player whose stock plummeted over the last few months for medical reasons. Doctors at the combine caught a back issue when he told them of problems he’d had with stingers, and it was determined that he should get disc fusion surgery. At that point, Clark was expected to be drafted on Friday night, somewhere in the second or third round.

But the back surgery may knock him out for his entire rookie season, and that was enough to knock him all the way down to the fifth round, where Dallas scooped him up.
Now see this was smart:
Talented player with major injury concerns you take a 5th round flyer on.
Jaylen Smith you don't risk a premium second round pick on.
Hopefully we have learned our lesson !!!

A mere 5th round, late round pick on a guy with that kind of size/speed ratio, and productivity at a big school competition conference, i'll gladly take that low risk/high reward.

Not like it's a high 2nd round pick ala Jaylon Smith.
this guy could be the better players in this draft in the future. also jaylon smith should have been a fifth round pick instead of a second. he will take over vanderesch spot next year and save us from having to draft a linebacker in early rounds next year.

I will be surprised if hes out all year I've had two of these surgeries and more disks involved now I do understand the team may not
want him rushing back and he is playing football but it wouldn't surprise me by midseason if hes back

Stephen recently commented that his return by midseason would likely be the case, since he's ahead of schedule. Damone Clark's surgeon confirmed that, as well. He stated that the rupture of Damone's disk in his back wasn't as serious as it was originally anticipated.

Hopefully, the Cowboys' people won't gamble on it and make sure that it's a safe point in time to allow his return. I can't imagine how they'd know for certain, however. Playing pro football isn't something that a typical patient would do only six months into his recovery. I suppose there would be definitive tests that can be made by the medical staff to avoid re-injury.

Good use of one of those 5th round picks. Instead of using a 2nd round pick as usual.

Yeah, we decided to pass on an injured player this time and use our second round pick on another one with character concerns.

You see, Jerry hit it out of the park once again. Time to apologize to Jerry and give him kudos for drafting very well.

Here, I wrote a little apology speech for all who have bashed Jerry in recent years, including myself...

"Dear, Jerry...you were right and I was wrong. Please accept my humble and sincere apology for criticizing you and questioning your ability as owner, General Manager and final decision maker of my beloved Dallas Cowboys, especially during the Draft. As punishment, I will call you, "Lord Jerry," for the next year. You are the best owner and GM the Cowboys have ever had, and I put my full faith in you once again, Lord Jerry.

Sincerely,

Your humble Cowboys fan...

(fill in your name here)"

I thought it was a neck issue?

When they said they did an anterior fusion I assumed neck also. But then I have seen several references saying it was his back but I had never heard of an anterior procedure to the back....seems like it would be so much more complicated with all the organs but apparently it is a thing. I'd love to hear definitively what level it was.

But does he really have character concerns. Again more misperception from fans?
He was actually cleared of that allegation.

But hey, still use that against him for the narrative.

He was accused of sexual battery and suspended in college. It was an accusation and he was cleared but it does put his character into question. Just because he was cleared doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, it means it couldn’t be proven. It did cause him to fall in the draft. Jerry spent at least 15 minutes during the Cowboys post draft press conference having to answer questions about his character.

He's had multiple off field issues. Where there is smoke there is fire.Expelled in high school, arrested, charged, and suspended in college.

Doesn't mean he hasn't or can't mature but let's not act like people are making things up.

And it could mean he was wrongly accused.

And sometimes smoke is just smoke, and sometimes has is just a bad smell. But it goes away, and all is good.

Could be and it could also be that he wasn’t wrongly accused. Whatever happened he better hope it never happens again. There’s some concern with him or he wouldn’t have fallen in the draft.

Was this cervical or spinal fusion surgery? They are not the same.

It's a cervical spinal fusion. The cervical spine is the rounded part at the top of your neck. It's problematic because the bones are really small but he is a big man he should be fine.
