This will be a little different, but for today's last word we go to Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay, the draft his yearly baby. On 105.3 The Fan this week, Will was asked about the Cowboys' fourth of four fifth-round picks, "Big" John Ridgeway, the 6-5, 321-pound 1-technique defensive tackle from Arkansas. Specifically, what made him so intriguing to the Cowboys?

"It's a big man's game, and big men who do the right things and know who they are," McClay said, meaning Ridgeway knows his responsibility is to clog the middle against the run, take on double-teams. "This guy knows who he is, knows what he's all about.

"And that's something that is going to be important to our defense, especially in our division. You know, moving forward you've got to win the division first, but you've got to stop the run first."

No kidding, and last year the Cowboys were only 16th against the run, giving up 112.8 yards a game, opponents rushing for more than 100 yards 13 times with 12 of those in the final 13 games. And need I point out in the playoff loss to San Francisco, the Niners went for 169 yards and two rushing touchdowns, one Deebo Samuel's 26-yard run.

Yeah, everyone needs a "Big John" in there to take some shots.

I like the pick on it's surface but I'm not very familiar with the player other than reading about him. Maybe a replacement for what we were hoping to get from Urban last year. Raw and young but bigger. So maybe a little impact year one especially on early downs in a rotation. One of the guys I'm looking forward to seeing in the preseason

He is bigger (not height wise) and better than Urban.

I have looked at Ridgeway a ton since the draft and think he is better than Travis Jones and I really don't see the difference with Jordan Davis. Davis has more size (1" and 20 lbs) and is slightly more explosive (used extremely rarely) but ridge has a motor and a bad man demeanor. I see him on the field for 90% of the snaps on defense and actually leading his defense.

Davis is on the field for 40-50% of the snaps and half of those he is gassed.

I like the point he made about Tyler Smith, as to 3 other teams wanted to move ahead of us the select him.
Also the point about another OT was not taken until the 3rd round. Little known draft facts that fans nor the media realize until after it is all done.

From what I heard and read on draft day. Davis has a lazy type attitude also. Kind of in the Trysten Hill type category. Though over all better. But he could end up being a bust in a way, and just be a JAG.

I watched the draft on ESPN and they showed plays with him getting blocked by one guy and just standing there. They said this is what you get a lot of the itme.

Is Mick still on the Cowboy's payroll ?
Hard to be a journalist with that kind of conflict of interest.

I think there is a high probability of being a bust with Davis. Certainly he won't be able to live up to his draft status.

I imagine our run defense number's would've been worse had we not forced teams to play catch up early and often. As the offense sputtered the run defense worsened.

What?
So a reporter is not credible because he is on the payroll of the team?
Then all the crap that Kiper said is not credible because he is on the payroll of ESPN and we know how ESPN hates the Cowboys.

It's been a big mans game for years. The Cowboys have repeatedly shown zero interest in drafting a big DT (like all fans have been screaming about for years) until this year. They are just now catching up.

I wonder what their next revelation will be? Maybe it's that you don't need to pay a RB $18.5M a year for 60 yards a game.
