Are we sure Ferguson can’t be a star?

We're gonna be watching McKeon and Sprinkle. Lmao

It took Jarwin and Schultz 2 years before they ever played a snap.

That's how it goes when ya don't invest any draft capitol or resources into the position.

We coulda won some Superbowls if we woulda had 2 good tes. As much as we use 2 tes ya'd think we'd have a great te core.

Our te core that plays 140% + of the snaps has avged 4-6 tes a year for over a decade. Lol

We ain't gonna win playoff games and Superbowls with trash stats like that.

You lost the argument when you claimed Wydermeyer was an uber athlete.

Are we sure ferguson can’t be a star? They say he’s not quick but has the best hands? How do we know he can’t be the Fitzgerald or m Irvin of tight ends? They weren’t fast.
Well the proof is in the pudding.

Irvin was a master route runner, extremely physical.

Good hands alone doesn't qualify you. Speed ar TE helps.

At this point he has potential but NFL is NFL, players get chewed and spit out every year and a few become stars

His 40 time is slow but his other (more relevant) times were somewhere in the 95-99 percentile.

He could be a really good player for us.

Biggest knock they had on him was the expectations were sky high after his first year in college, but he just kinda stayed the same. As I understand it he wasn't really in an offense with qbs to showcase his talent either.

Thats what I got off of the Locked On podcast at least.
In other words he peaked his first year in college.

I think our problem with blocking in the run game was all Schultz. He had been pretty good at it, but struggled last year. I think we see Ferguson as similar to him, and I think the Cowboys are fine with Schultz returning as the starter and we'll be watching to see if he can clean up his blocking. If he can, he'll likely get a long-term deal until Ferguson proves to be about as good.

I don't really think it's comparable to safety. I mean, Schultz was drafted while we still had Witten (albeit Witten near the end of his career). Now, Schultz in that lead role proved to be a capable starter, except for the blocking slip. This year will determine if we need to invest better resources into the position.
TE blocking is secondary to run game. Your run game starts with scheme and OL. Having a good blocking TE is icing on the cake. We struggled because of Williams and Biafasz unable to get any push up the middle. And we telegraphed our run plays. If Blocking TE was the main key to a good run game every team would be drafting a blocking TE in the first two rounds..

Agreed.

Cowboys did a very nice job finding and picking up Jake Ferguson. He may be the reason the Cowboys have yet to give Schultz a big longterm contract?

So cowboys didn't negotiate with Schtz because they knew they will pick Ferguson I. The draft?? Wwhhhaaattt:facepalm:

Witten had average speed but had quickness. I remember him catching a deep pass on prime Al Harris in 2004.
He was a very good route runner that set up the defenders and get separation. His 265lb frame helped and he used it well. Despite la k of speed he was not easy to bring down.

He has all the signs. Next Mark Andrews. Maybe Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, or TJ Hockensen.

Cowboys wanted to wait until after the Draft to see who they could pick up.
True. But not because of Ferguson. They had no idea who they might get. So he is not the reason they didn't negotiate. And he is on a one year deal so depending on how Ferguson will work out. Schultz is not a fan favorite,. Doesn't sell a lot of jerseys so I doubt if he gets resigned. The Jones family hands out contracts based on jersey sales.

It was based on the comment that he really didn't improve as expected...

I get that. I don't know the context of what he was up against, though. I'm sure he will improve from college. Being in a professional strength and conditioning program, along with pro coaching, should help. Whether that makes him a great player or a jag is beyond me.

People are saying the same things about Ferguson that they said when Schultz was drafted. Now they call him Sarge.

On paper, Ferguson looks a lot like Schultz. Time will tell if he develops similarly.

well, most college players peak in their Jr. Sr years. if he didn't imrove 4 years in college, that's concerning. we hope he can improve in the pros.

Ferguson looks like a less athletic Jarwin to me and he’ll never have a big role once Schultz is paid.

All it takes is one good game then, and the Jones Boyz will sign him for major ducats.

Blocking is not secondary when you have a QB that needs 100 yards on the ground to win. Blake Bell would be a better fit for this team.
