Perhaps the Cowboys really did get it right.

The Dallas Cowboys offensive line is in an interesting place as it still features some prominent players in Tyron Smith and Zack Martin, but is also in need of a reload and replenishment with the future on the horizon. It is the latter reason that seemingly drove the Cowboys to select Tulsa’s Tyler Smith with their first-round pick a week and a half ago.

It's all based on assumptions. Had Tyler Smith gone to Alabama next year and played as expected (and filled up more of his frame considering he just turned 21), maybe he's a top 10 draft pick in 2023. Or he struggles and is a mid round selection. Only way to tell is to see how it plays out.

Chance Warmack and Jonathan Cooper were both considered can't miss prospects and neither lived up to their draft spot, and the two guards in this draft had even more question marks, so its tough to guess before anyone plays a game.

Chance was never a super motivated guy. Alabama gets the best out of everyone b/c their coaching staff is amazing. Then he goes to TN , they switch positions on him, and the team is awful. He stops caring about football and pretty much mailed it in the rest of his career. Its a tough transition going from the winning tradition at Alabama to some of these NFL teams.

True.

Tyron wasn't as much of a finished product for a top 10 pick as one would like, we just forget.

He didn't play any left tackle at USC and was a bit undersized.

It worked out.

I just hope Tyler doesn't need to take a single regular season snap at LT this season.

Bingo. Tyron was like 295 if I remember when drafted.

If Tyler is just Ron Leary good we’ve improved 10 fold already. I think he’s going to better because he appears to be a worker.

Different type players. Zion is a better prospect for a guard who could also play center for you and is built to play inside the phone booth. Smith is a better prospect for a guard who could also play tackle for you and is built on athletic traits that could help him play in space. I liked the pick. It may have been a little early for some but he was never going to make it to 48 and in the end they got the player they wanted without having to trade anything for it.

"there was at least one who agreed with Dallas having Smith over Johnson and arguably Green."

I have no problem with the pick and am excited to watch/hear about this kid at LG, but this isn't exactly proof of much and is a little bit like a weak attempt at digging up any semblance of justification by BTB who are really just cheerleaders writing ridiculously pro Cowboy stories. I guess it's no different than feeling the need to waive your draft rankings to the world to try and show how you aren't a complete buffoon, while clearly doing the opposite. I mean could you imagine if out of 31 other execs none of them agreed?

Judgement of any draft pick is purely speculative at this point. I agree that it's impossible to tell how a draftee is going to play until he plays, but we start bashing and hyping these guys soon as their names are announced every year.

I like the way he speaks and handles himself.

His floor got a lot higher for me after the PC. I don't see how he would be considered not coachable, but that was written.

It was also written that Micah Parsons lacked football instincts.

Potential is certainly there for him to be a great player.
How fast he can mature is the key
Mature as a player that is

He has got potential out the yang. My worry is those penalties. I have yet to see anyone who had that many penalties in college really reduce them all that much in the pros.

Cooper had a severe broken leg (Femur) and was never the same afterwards.

Warmack was already slow as molasses and then got way too fat in the NFL.
- He and the RT at Alabama back then were over-rated due to playing at Alabama.

I think Zion is more ready to play in the NFL but Smith has a higher upside. The Cowboys need a LG who can start right away. Can Smith make the leap so quickly or will he be a liability early on? I don't doubt Dallas had him rated higher than the two guards because he has position flexibility, which to Dallas is football gold.

Alabama players are like Patriots players. Some are great with other teams, but many only function well with Saban/Belichick. Similar to some Jimmy era players that moved on in free agency. Alvin Harper, etc..
