I dont hate Brady at all. Wouldn't call myself a fan but his ability to consistently elevate the play of those around him and hatred of losing has no peer, I envy that, and I have been watching football since the 60s.
And that’s the thing . Don’t have to be a fan to want to watch the best play.

Many didn’t like Cosell or didn’t like Muhammad Ali. But you couldn’t wait to hear what Howard said next or see Ali’s next fight or interview. Polarizing figures.

Much like Montana or Brady. While I rooted against their teams , with two minutes left no greater talents to watch. I wasn’t a Laker or Bulls fan but enjoyed Magic and Jordan. But two of the greatest ever watch .

I think that’s what has happened over time and we are seeing more this era is that fans flock to these super stars and popular marquee names and become fans of their teams instead of just continuing to root for their old teams on and watching from a distance like we used to.

Some of my favorite players as a kid weren’t on my favorite teams . I enjoyed watching them but didn’t always root for them.

Maybe it’s because there’s more access to all of the teams and players . I’m not sure if all of this transformations are good overall for the game and how we end up with so much bias and hate for opposing teams great talents.

Really? I think the opposite. Interviews versus being excited about game action are 2 different things. The guy works his butt off at his craft and I have no doubt he'll make the same commitment in the booth.

Playing NFL football at a high level and broadcasting it are two different things. Both require a skill. Joe Montana gave it a try in the studio after his NFL career and he wasn’t any good. I remember Roger Staubach broadcasting a few games and his delivery was too slow. He didn’t last long.

Ha yeah. Madden was very different, but they always did the best games also. I'd have watched if it was Ernie and Bert calling the game lol.
For years I turned down the sound on Cowboy games and listened to local radio broadcast . That was always the best.

Even when I attended home games for most of 4 decades I brought radio and earplugs with me.

And so half of these seasons I rarely saw much of the second games as I was in transit either before or after Cowboys game. This was all before the technology of today. I used to bring a 2” Sony black and white with me to the games so I could see instant replay.

But until I started staying home with Direct TV did I really start listening to broadcasters as live radio was about 5 seconds ahead of broadcast. I’ve never liked it as much as radio.

What surprised so many about Aikman was his energy level when he tried out in Europe summer ball. He went to school on broadcasting just as he did QBing in high school. He nailed the basics and can still help with the energy level within a game.

That's the problem I have with Romo, he has not even learned the basics of not talking off mic and still talks to Nantz when he's supposed to be talking to the audience. He still doesn't get the ambient crowd noise is his competition in some of those broadcast booths.

Witten got thrown to the wolves with a first-time director/producer and Tessitore and McFarland as his partners. ESPN continued to do a bad job by letting Griese and Riddick fight for mic time with Riddick trying to out talk Griese.

If you get the chance to go back to games they did, Madden and Summerall understood that the audience needs a break from talking and time to be in the game. They really understood talking to the audience is different than talking at them. And they didn't need a 3rd voice in the booth.

The Gifford, Meredith and Cosell trio was lightning in a bottle with Meredith and Cosell already personalities to the audience. It wasn't football, it was Monday Night Football and that went away with them. Cosell wasn't there for the game, he was there to promote A B C in his own can't be imitated style. I can still hear that A B C delivery when he would promote anything related to them.

They probably don’t care if he’s any good they just want a big name in the booth. Listening to his interviews he doesn’t sound like he would be a very good broadcaster.
That's my take as well. Boring personality, and probably laughs at his own dumb jokes, but nobody else's.

As an aside Cosell was the greatest interviewing the greatest. BOTH men were unlike anyone today in their fields. I know it's not what you were saying but it just gave me a chance to say that without starting a whole new thread

You didn't hear Aikman calling out Randy Gregory for his dumb bear hug penalty in the playoff game? Also, it was Aikman who seemed ready to fight Mike Pereira when Pereira was backing those tripping calls on the Cowboys OL in New England a few years back. I've seen Romo call out players too, albeit softly.
Aikman only calls out easy targets.

He picks on the players who others have targeted by other people in the media or lesser known players, but he softens his criticism when it comes to star players to things like, "not sure what he was thinking" and "he normally makes better throws than that".

I think this is crazy. You don't even know how good he'll be. I have my doubts he'll be good.
Same. If I had to guess, I'd put his floor at Montana and his ceiling at Aikman. And if I had to bet, I'd bet on the floor.
