Sensing the Naggar release might have something to do with this

They said he’s a prime candidate to be re-signed for camp. Seems like they needed to get to a certain roster number whether to sign someone else or to get under the 90 man limit.

Think it has more to do with Jonathan Garibay, and possibly even Simon Mathieson.

Kicking inside today at the rookie minicamp, Mathieson was reportedly 20 of 21 on FGs.

Perhaps. But one day's performance seems a bit over-reactionary, and Garibay is, for now, just as unproven... whereas the JAX ex-kicker has a catalog of work to go on, and the timing of his release, and within 48 hours Naggar's, of course, fits the theory.

You're right, it was to get to 91 players (Isaac Alarcon is still exempt). A spot will probably open up again for him after rookie minicamp since one of these players might not prove they belong this weekend.

Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part, but it would be reassuring to go into the preseason with a kicker with an actual decent track record that any of the competition would have to beat. At this stage of the off-season, on the other hand, his agent probably got multiple calls in the span of a few hours.

From my understanding, he was released to get the roster down to 90. So if we brought in another kicker, then we'd have to release another player. I think we're just satisfied where we are at the moment. If the tryout kicker proves worthy of a spot, we might sign him or we might bring back Naggar, but I don't think the fact that we have 90 players still means we want to sign a different kicker, it simply means we signed our draft picks and had to make room. Essentially, Garibay took his roster spot.

Who knows, we might only take one kicker to camp so that we can focus on finding out if he has what it takes. Usually, we have two when we have a vet so that we can rest the proven vet, but we need to see as much of a young player as possible.

I would love to see him signed by us

They won’t keep the QBs

Which quarterbacks? I don't think the tryout ones are considered to be under contract. If Dallas wants to re-sign Naggar it will have to cut a UDFA or a player who was already on the roster. The team essentially signed more UDFAs than it had room for once the draft picks were under contract. That's not uncommon as teams try to figure out which bottom-of-the-roster players have a better chance of competing for a roster or practice squad spot.

With Naggar, though, the Cowboys might feel they don't necessarily have to make a move at the moment as he's not likely to be in high demand right now.
