personally I think it was a solid season for his first real season as the starting center. But certainly not good enough to stop looking for a better one.
What is his real problem, strength? Or mental?

I agree, Smith has a very high ceiling, could become an elite player. However, we need to be patient and understand he needs development.

That's exactly what I was about to comment about. It's not like Tyler Smith is certain to be a "plug and play" guy, even at LG.

His pass protection needs work. Some members within the membership here aren't especially patient. They need work, too!

They aren't handing him the job this year. They brought in 2 undrafted prospects, where both were expected to be day 3 picks like Biaz and also have Farniok who they drafted last yr. Before you say, late or undrafted prospects aren't an upgrade, the Bucs Center was a former 7th rounder who just earned a huge extension.

If also helps when the future tackle is the only one still available.
Not true ther are over 200 players selected yearly and many undrafted that many turn into starteers.,no need for it to be a 1st rounder.

maybe if you meant THE last quality OT left with talent an upside that could possibly start game 1, sure ill give you that..

I'm talking about the three players mentioned. Which was obvious.

Good point about how Martin spoiled us. But I'd argue Fred did the same. I knew he was going to be great out of the box given Brian Water's comments about how Fred was teaching him the offense. A rookie teaching a vet. Wow.
Fred struggled a bit early with power and I think the team thought Connor W would be like that but instead he never got stronger the way Frederick did.
I was never a big CW fan because I saw him struggle some versus Texas Tech at a time when they had the worst defense in D1.

But sometimes you draft guys and thye are just maxed out. Happens with Bama dudes a lot. Elite college player but no room for growth as a pro. Connor just never got stronger.

I was listening to a podcast this weekend where Cowboys scouting, Chris Hall was on. He said that all 3 could play Guard now, but they viewed Green/Zion as future Centers, but saw Smith as the only future tackle. He says that you take the future Tackle 10 out of 10 times.
I wouldnt hire chris hall to be a cashier if he thought they were future centers lol

A few of you mentioned Erik Williams as a comparison. If Tyler Smith has an Erik Williams attitude and can back it up, he'll become one of my favorite picks in a long, long time.

He's got the glare down pat.

Definitely not mental. He's just a young player. I dont think there is a problem beyond that. His struggles were over exaggerated. I definitely dont think he has the promise of a Travis Frederick.

He has never been handed the job. They have brought in young players to compete at almost every position save RB and QB. Nothing knew there.

Last yr they did.

He beat out Farniok, McGovern, and even Williams for the job.

Now all of a sudden because they brought in a couple undrafted FA center rookies its going to be a tough battle?

Those three you mention as Biadasz “beating out” have almost no experience playing center at college level and have spent maybe an off-season cross training part-time at Center.

Those UDFA’s have actually have multiple seasons playing the position and Farniok now has at least had one off-season to improve where he’s presumably focused on Center. It’s definitely more competition than he’s had to beat out in the past although it’s still not much.
