One of the concepts we hear and read about during draft season is “building through the draft”; how important it is, how it’s the key to success in the NFL, how dynasties are built off it, blah, bah, blah. But is ‘building through the draft’ still a relevant concept today, or is it more or less a relic from pre-free agency days? And what’s the alternative to building through the draft, “building through free agency”?

Teams that draft bad have to use free agency more than teams that draft good. You build a team by any means necessary, but every team would love to be a good drafting team. So every team would love to build through the draft.

Some teams sell their souls in free agency... Rams. Some teams sell their souls in the draft... Washington. Failure makes you look stupid. Success make you look smart. But at the end of the day every team would love to draft well.

The good teams know you can't build through the draft solely.

A fact losts on the two nitwits running the Cowboys.

Agreed. I'm on board with the idea of not spending freely in free agency, but with only a few exceptions the Cowboys seem to only use free agency to fill out the depth on the roster. A few key acquisitions in free agency could make a big difference. I hate they didn't make more of an effort to get Bobby Wagner. Even at his age he is still a truly elite player, and the contract he signed with the Rams seemed very reasonable.

Of course the Rams may have had a big edge because they are more of a Super Bowl contender and Wagner is from California, but I believe Wagner said the Cowboys would have been a strong consideration but never really showed a serious interest.

Two of the LA Rams' top five players (Ramsey and Stafford) are FA acquisitions and both are costing the Rams big money, while the three Cowboys FAs are fairly low-rent players. In total, seven of their top 15 are FAs.

Dallas uses free agency. There's just no tangible evidence that the Cowboys use it right.

Exactly. A key FA here or there that helps is the smart play. Spending like drunken sailors, however, is silly.

Ramsey and Stafford were trades not FA. Ramsey cost them 2 1st rd picks and a 4th rd pick.

Right. You need balance. I prefer building through the draft and filling big holes in FA. We got it half right. We build through the draft and sign cheap FAs. I wish we would open up the vault for a bug need like a run stopping DT. That would be the only thing I'd add this offseason.

Sorry but the devil is in the details those 3 free agents account for about 11m in cap dollars in total hardly excruciating cap numbers.

It is relevant when you can have 11 or 12 rookies make your team which is what should take place this year.

Why is it one way or the other?
It would seem a balanced approach where you obtain talent through the draft, free agency and trades would be the way to go ?

Rambo, I appreciate your optimism, but we have to wait and see what we have with the Rookies.
They are very unpredicable and counting on them is not wise.

This is a little misleading since only last year Amari Cooper would have been near the top of the list of our highest paid players. While not a free agent, he was an external player acquired by a trade.

It’s actually amazing they did all that through the draft.

but like they say in the article…. Other teams are lapping the cowboys by using both.

But a horrible trade
