How many first round picks are not slated to start at their college position? I get the thinking just curious.

From what we’ve seen from McGovern and heard how bad he looked at OTAs, along with hearing that while Waletzko looked overmatched at times, Ball looked worse this weak and just doesn’t look strong enough, I actually expect McGovern will be released, and Ball May end up on the practice squad….just possibilities.

I think we will sign a couple of vets during camp or preseason unless someone steps up big time. We will bring in some experience at OG cheaply and most likely a swing tackle unless Waletzko proves he can handle it. I see no way we move Tyler Smith from Left Guard to tackle, nor move Steele from Right tackle to left due to any situation with Tyron Smith.

We need a capable swing tackle either way since we do not yet have a guy who can back up either tackle spot….time will tell. And our guard situation is really no better if Zack or Tyler get injured or moved…..unless McGovern can backup better on the right than the left. We will give our young guys a chance to prove they can handle it, but I have no doubt we will bring in another vet guard and tackle as backups if needed, and plenty of vets will become available as the preseason approaches.

Started a thread a couple of days ago on the idea of moving T. Smith to LG and having 1st round rookie Tyler Smith start day 1.

I was severely roasted by so many here that I had to take time away from this forum to let my feelings heal. It was brutal.

But just saw the news above that Smith is in a walking boot and experiencing tightness in his back at OTAs. Most likely this is just precautionary.

But what's the plan for oline if Smith misses games during the regular season?

Move Steele from RT to LT and Ball at RT?

That sounds more risky to me than having Tyler at LT and #77 at LG day 1.

What's the plan when Smith misses games?
what a surprise Smith trying to figure away out of training camp already we should have addressed this problem 3 years ago now it just keeps coming back to haunt us

Think they are still figuring that out, with a vet option possible. Right now, it's Ball and Waletzko competing to be the swing tackle/backup. I think we want to have Tyler Smith focus on guard for now, which is the right move IMO since we're expecting Tyron to play, even if it's not a full season.

Unless some steps up it will be Steele who plays LT for the games Smith misses. Hopefully there won’t be too many but there WILL be games missed

Where is the thread where a few posters were trying claim Smith is healthy now after his surgery and won’t miss games. Good times…good times :lmao2:

I prefer to at least wait until pads come one before I assume half our players can’t play. But I do agree with you 100% on the need to find a solid swing tackle, but I’m not ready to say he isn’t already on the roster in May. If we are willing to pay the price we can always find one if we need to. But this teams idea of a free agent veteran tackle is the vet minimum and a bunch of years in a row now we got what we paid for at the position. Crap.
