The way to become mediocre is to pay franchise money to replaceable players.

Schultz had great numbers as the 4th or 5th option on the field. Easy row to hoe.

No one pays franchise money to replaceable players. Schultz was one of our most targeted receivers last season. He picked up some critical third downs for us in 2021. If he stays healthy he’ll likely have a huge season with the issues we have at WR.

You put Schultz on Tampa, Rams, GB, KC he is putting up big numbers. Those teams could care less if their TE is that great a blocker because he would be a mismatch for a LB to cover.

The problem is he shouldn't have been. That's not a dig on Schultz either. The offense fell apart and we were handing him targets on a silver platter. I believe there are quite a few TEs who would have been successful in such a perfect set up. As I said before if he can block better and come back to those numbers he will be worth a contract imo.

I want to see him do it again in an actual functioning offense without defenses accounting for Coop.

I'm glad he was franchised rather than giving him that big contract at this point. He's a nice wait and see player. I do like Schultz and hope for the best. I just need a little more convincing.

With Blake Jarwin’s injury and the loss of Cooper and Cedric Wilson we had to franchise him. We couldn’t afford to lose our starting TE along with our number one receiver and a key backup at receiver all in the same offseason.

The Cowboys cannot afford to pay Schultz that kind of a contract, not with Lamb coming up on the horizon. This is not a TE driven offense and paying your TE that kind of money makes no sense. Unless you are changing your offense, and i don't see them doing this.

It’s going to be tough for Ferguson to show enough to allow Schultz to walk if he has a great season. Although Schultz struggles as a blocker he’s gotten better as a receiver every season. His numbers ranked fifth amongst TEs last season. He’s become a very good security blanket for Dak and he moves the chains. Ferguson would have to have a terrific rookie season to allow Schultz to walk. We don’t want to leave ourselves in a situation where TE is a top priority entering the draft next year. The trenches are still going to be a problem and it’s going to take time to fix it. At some point we’re going to have to invest a top pick on a big nasty DT. We’re going to have to get more physical in the trenches or it’s going to be our undoing every season.
Shultz minumally impacts the game. Most of his stats much like the QB throwing to him are garbage stats. Any JAG backup we have could produce or come close to his production and wasting money on him is exactly a waste when it could be spent on a premium player at a premier position.

Not true.

Man, I just don't get how you guys don't understand getting open at the NFL level. Do you get all your news from TV, by any chance?

100% no freaking way. He's not getting that. If Jerry would to pay that he would be a moron.

I don't understand how our FO can be so cheap with FA and yet overspend on their own players. The Jones's are truly morons.

There's no guaranty that they leave him on the tag. They have until July to work out a long term contract with Schultz.

However, the sentiment here @ CZ - this thread plus the other two about Schultz - is for not to offer him a long term contract at all. (Running 80 - 20 against is my estimate. )

I would rather sign my own guy if they are good. Just dont overpay for your own guys. Which doesnt seem to work with Jerry. He winds up paying whatever they would have gotten anyway so whats the point? Might as well sign other peoples FA's as well.

Schultz is on the youthful side of things and won the job producing strong enough to push out the previous and strongly producing to oust Blake Jarwin.

The current tight end group may end up both strong and very good group at that.

Give him the 4 years and $64 M. He earned it while being challenged.
