And you could just let him go and save all that cap space.
I agree
I was simply pointing out what he’s gonna cost to sign as a FA
He gonna get 12-13 mil and you could tag him for 13
Which shows how salaries are exploding and why it’s so important to draft well and develop players
In a perfect world only an really good pass rusher or QB would extend. Those positions are so hard to find
The only other guys would be truly elite players like Martin
The rest you have to have another guy waiting to take his place

The Cowboys will have handled this correctly if they don’t extend Schultz at retail. They picked up his clone successor in Ferguson so we we should be good in 2023.

I wish they weren’t paying Schultz over $10 million this year.

They nickel and dime outside free agents but have no problem grossly overpaying ‘their guys’.

Can we really break the bank for a TE that can’t block? He’s great otherwise but dang, tough debate

After seeing the deal Njoku got, it's best to let him walk.

He'll definitely want more and deservedly so since it's what the market pays.
That’s not what the market pays. It’s what 1 dumb team paid. Njoku is also a more complete TE that is a good blocker.

What "if" he drastically improves his blocking and maintain his pass catching abilities?

I honestly do not think we are going to sign Dalton long term.

Good. He's a one dimensional TE. It's not like we are letting a Travis Kelce clone leave after this season. Guys like Schultz can be found in the draft every year. No sense giving him a huge contract when he is easily replaced.

let him walk after this season and draft Michael Mayer from Notre Dame.
Don't have to. His replacement is already on the roster.

If Schultz goes for this next man up stupid crapp, let him walk.

Right? I was fine with letting him walk after last season and getting a vet stopgap for a rook they drafted. Not that we would have done anything with the savings but oh well.

Is it a gross overpay when it is less than what he would get on the open market? We have already seen worse players getting paid more. I know we harp on the blocking but in reality the highest paid TEs are not being paid to block they are being paid to be a mismatch for defenses.

I smell a big contract coming for him next season from some other foolish team and a nice 3rd round comp pick for us.

13-14m would not be enough for a 3rd round comp. At best you are looking at a 4th round comp if he stays healthy and plays well.

How likely is Ferguson to take over the starter TE position in year 2?
