Doesn't matter. Bad negotiation. Bad contract. I would be able to stomach Dak's inadequacies and being avg if he wasn't paid like the best QB in the league. Team could put some pieces around him to prop him up.
Who did they put around him while he was on his 4th rd rookie contract?

Thanks for the clarification.
I am really nervous about our oline Depth.
We lost 2 starters and only drafted one potential starter.
We are paper thin, and don't have much proven depth.

Yes that is a concern. Maybe they are waiting to see what they have in TC, a PS game, then go from there to bring in a vet player.
Also waiting to see who gets cut from other teams as well. Not a lot of potential difference makers out there right now.

They are in all likelihood done adding to the OL.

Tackles : Smith, Steele, Ball, Waletzko are all locks
Guard : Martin, McGovern, Smith, Farniok are all locks
Center : Biadasz is a lock

That is 8 locks. Then you have several players grouped up and 2-3 will make the final roster.

Alarcon, Empey, Jones, Lindstrom a few of those should round out the final 2-3 spots

I had heard, and don't know how true it is, was that their were a lot free agents still available.
Now I don't know the quality level.

Not happy with this group.
A lot of ifs, hopes, not a lot of proven quality players there.
Smith has not played a complete season since 2015.
I think this is one area where the front office fumbled the ball.

Julio is toast now

Nobody is saying he's the 110 catch best WR in the league Julio Jones anymore.

But he's still very serviceable. Probably at least as serviceable as Amari Cooper is, at a lot lesser rate.

When your QB is taking 22% of the cap and his play is average that is even worse!

But here's the thing. It's not like he would be preventing the Cowboys from putting better pieces around him. He naturally fits under the cap. We don't have enough high paid players, or players that have big cap hits coming up for Dak to be a problem at the moment. Then consider how they approach FA, and all they need is money for the draft class.

My point is ....take a look around the NFL, salaries are rising (along with CAP allowance). There's no CAP issue in 2024, and even 2023 can be overcome with 'the carryover', release of Zeke (and maybe Tyron).
The Dak contract isn't an excuse for forthcoming years.

You're exactly right, there is no cap issue for 2023 or 2024. At least not one I can see. But all that means is he has no problem fitting under the cap. Which says something about the team around him. But hey, it's not like the Jones boys are being held back. Their SOP doesn't change.

Money to resign Nolan Carroll and lock up Noah Brown to a long term deal.

What I think is being overlooked is how much dead money is being added with the Dak restructures. It's not your normal situation as in a guy with a 10-15m salary. We are talking 40+ and dead money that we aren't used to from one guy.

That's why I'm not sure why they restructured him just to have available space that they intend to carry forward. Seems self defeating.

They kind of had to restructure him the last 2 years. It's this year coming up I am almost certain they aren't going to. Each time you do it, it becomes worse. I think they pushed something like 25M over the last two years. In order to get a cap hit next year similar to what we have this year, they'd have to push 30 million. They're not doing that. That would be insane. I'm thinking they're eating his entire cap hit next year. They have the room for it.

Alarcon gets an exemption so he is a lock too.
