Projected contract from somebody else. Cya Dalton
I will say this on behalf of Schultz credibility and that is the fact that he has shown growth and improvement other than 2019 because of the injury, but 3 out of 4 positive seasons and transcending seasons isn't a bad thing.
We have payed franchise money to far less talent with far lower ceilings, just saying.
Invest in what elevates, and we may not like seeing cap allocated for certain players at certain positions, but TE on this roster left this FO with their pants down, and if not for Schultz being on this roster they would have been completely de-pantsed,, is that a word :D
So say our franchised TE actually stays focused on the game and re sets his ceiling, Schultz is young at only 25 still so just maybe we havent seen his ceiling just yet, Witten got better with the mental understanding of the playbook and exactly where the soft spots would be in coverages.
So what Im saying is that we have probably already seen what the physical/athletic ceiling is for Schultz, but that doesn't limit him from refining his game, fine tuning.
Your best TEs' in this league all have refined the second half of the learning process, so I can actually understand and endorse the investment in Schultz.

so you study film on Njoku and evaluate his blocking skills? I dont think it is a dumb contract if they use him well. BUT, even if it is a dumb contract, that just set the bar for schultz. Dalton basically DOUBLED Njoku in rec, yards, and TDs and he just got 50 plus million. Let some team say .... but Dalton isnt really a great blocker when trying to justify giving him less than Njoku. Remember when people were saying how much Gregory was worth? it wasnt close to what he got. Same with Schultz. Someone will step up quickly and pay him if we dont.

can’t have a conversation with a guy that is ignorant to something like blocking or Njoku.

Pass catching is half the job. Obviously the new team understood it despite the lower numbers. They clearly understood he played for a run first team and joke qb like mayfield.

Pass catching is half the job? So tell me a great BLOCKING TE that is below avg at catching passes that is highly coveted? If you name the top 5 TE is NFL history, not one of them will be remembered for their great blocking. tony Gonzalez, Kelce, Sharpe,..... all of them were stud receivers... maybe decent blockers, but nobody cared about anything but TDs.

I'm a Schultz fan. He should get around 8.5 mil/season. This next guy up hoopla is silly.

Hey, I already said this!!!! Musta been drinkin' earlier!!!

Schultz is getting paid over 50% more than you think he should be paid.

Next man up!

I was just looking at the advanced receiving stats. QB rating when thrown at.

3 guys with decent sample size over 115 - Cooper, Schultz, and Wilson.

I maintain that
1) Cooper is that high because he's good, and despite getting the prime attention of defenses, still produced.
2) Wilson is that high because he's basically functional and was maybe the 4th or 5th threat the defense cared about, so had a very easy row to hoe.
3) Schultz is much closer to a Wilson than a Cooper.

I don't understand how our FO can be so cheap with FA and yet overspend on their own players. The Jones's are truly morons.

There is some sense to it. You simply *know* much more about your own players than players from other teams. and so are in a better position to make good purchase decisions about them.
Not that we do. But we're in a better position to do so.

That's fine, but a great TE does need to be able to block too. Jason Witten not only was a great receiving TE, but, especially in his prime, he was one of the top blocking TEs in the league. Also, I seem to recall that Anthony Fasano made a lot of his money for blocking.

Whether you are a fan or not he’s gonna get market value
Market value is not 8.5 and it’s not 16 either

Franchise tag. Not even close to what a contract means. Not to be evaluated in the same way.

I think it's lower than you think.
I think 12-13 mil is what he would have got had he hit the market
That’s online with Spotrac projections that are generally fairly close. The projections from heavy referenced in OP are a bit silly.
If you look at FA signed this year and what was projected by Sportrac they are very close estimates
If he hits the market next year and has a similar season he will get even more

I like Schultz and think he’s better than most fans do. Tagging him was the right move with the fact we lost cooper, Wilson and will be without Gallup for several games. But I’d rather replace him than pay him what it would take to keep him. I think Ferguson has potential to be a solid TE but I don’t think he will be a better receiver than Schultz so I expect us to be looking TE again next year unless McKeon can really show something. The staff seems really high in him but we haven’t seen him to really judge. Hopefully he can be a solid player. To me TE is very important but paying huge money to a guy who is not elite like a Kelsey or have the potential to be elite like Pitts, is not the best place to spend money
There are positions you have to keep players who are really good but not elite. DE and QB just because really good ones are hard to find and elite ones are rare. Most other positions are much easier to find a good player so those you don’t want to pay big money to.

Depending on how our season goes, he would be a good asset to trade near the deadline.

Wittemn.....1 TE that I would call a very good blocker/...... thats it? Thats all you got is 1? Face the facts. Njoku hasnt done jack squat even close to what Schultz has done the past 2 seasons. No way is Schultz not getting more than Njoku.
