Sad to hear of Don Perkins passing away.He was an outstanding runner, consistent, durable, intelligent and had so many productive seasons year after year. Highly respected and highly and universally liked by his Cowboys teammates and held in great esteem by Coach Tom Landry who praised his excellence throughout his career.

RIP Perk and thanks for all those unforgettable nicknames you gave Your fellow Cowboys.

Man, I hate to hear this.
The traditional opening play during his heyday was “Perkins up the middle.”
Hate to think of it but you could field a darn good team with the Cowboys we’ve lost.
Love to his family and friends.

To all the young fans who don't know about Don Perkins: Don Meredith and Don Perkins were the second and third members of the Ring of Honor (Mr. Cowboy, Bob Lilly was the first).

There's a REASON they're both in the ROH. 'Nuf said.

The first great running back in Cowboy history. I recall seeing a large banner hung outside the football stadium for New Mexico when I went to Albuquerque a few years ago. Tougher than his size, underrated performer. Also had a silky smooth voice, and did some commentary and radio work post retirement. RIP to #43.

Perkins was really a good player. As I recall, he wasn't overly fast but had a lightning quick start and darted past the line before anyone could get their hands on him. He was just so consistent, that he'd routinely frustrate opposing defenses that couldn't stop him. A very respected player in his era. He was also an especially high character individual, who always gave his best.

Perkins would beat Bob Hayes in a foot race….for the first ten yards, then Hayes hit another gear.

Hayes had a notoriously bad start. You can tell from film of his 100 yd races (or 100m in the Olympics) that he was a football guy running track, not a track guy playing football.
