Jerry did a great job his first 5 years, hired Jimmy , mostly stayed out of the way, signed players.
Did a great job.
Last 27 years has been in over his head with bad trades and bad drafts , hired the wrong HC's and then kept them too long (Garrett).
So looking at his whole body of work I would give him a 6 overall.
Mainly because of those 3 SB's wins.
PS: Hiring wrong front office personal like his son is also a major error.
You hire people because of their ability to get the job done, not just because they are your offspring.
This isn't the local grocery store.
Running a NFL Franchise is a complex operation.

I believe that Jerry is among the top three to four owners in football. My evidence for that statement is the fact that no other owner puts as much of himself into his franchise as Jerry does. He has the passion & the money to make just about anything happen. Rating: 10

In other words, he puts his money where his mouth is & you just can’t knock him for that. I would take Jerry, the owner, over any other in the NFL. He brings in the talent. He builds stadiums. He keeps the Dallas Cowboys at the front & center of the NFL universe.

Having said that, Jerry also has a darker side that is beginning to emerge over the last decade plus. In a word, it’s ego. That's where the GM comes into play. Rating: 2

Hiring his sons? They have been there since day 1, including the SB wins.

And you nailed it. Running a NFL team is complex, so why do so many on here think they can run it any better. :muttley:

But a 6 is about right given the lack of playoff success the past 26 years.

It would be a lot easier if we could grade Owner/GM as different roles. Overall though there is more good than bad with Jerry. He's been one of the better owners in the league for his run. His roster construction actually hasn't been bad most years. I'd argue the bigger issue with Jerry has been around the culture hes created and handling of the coaching staffs.

Owner - 7

GM - 3

In terms of the business side of things, he's a 10 as an owner. He's made all the right business moves, increased the value and profitability of the franchise, etc. But because he's also the owner who decides to keep himself as GM, well then, he gets 3 points deducted from his score. But you can't argue the business side of this.

Sure, he helped build those SB teams. But the keyword there is "helped". Since he and Jimmy parted ways, Jerry and his son have assumed control of basically everything. And the results are what the results are. 4 playoff wins in 25 years. That puts them in a small handful of teams like the WFT and Browns in terms of postseason ineptitude. That kind of run, led by the same GM, is a real failure.

If jerry could have just kept the rest of the family out of his party and kept rolling after Jimmys departure in the direction that was there to be taken, but he didnt.
This franchise would have more Lombardis in the trophy shelf, and Jerry would be considered legendary, above iconic as an owner at this point.
Jerry wasted a lot of his legacy and this franchises opportunities by turning the Cowboys into a family business.

Good points. I just have a difficult time applauding him as an owner when he insists on making himself and his children the face of the franchise and key decision makers.....add on the refusal to change despite a large sample size of that not working.

On the flip side Jerry is the perfect businessman and the best salesman I've even seen. I have little doubt that the NFL is in the prosperous spot it's currently in largely because of him. Many wealthy people are indebted to him.

An absolute brilliant businessman. I truly admire him for that, but I wish he would allow more qualified football people to run our team. Yes, OURS. They are an institution, and many of us were here before Jerry Jones.

You don't buy the Museum of Natural History and turn it into a roller rink just because you have the money to do that.

Anyone with any reason at all understands that Jerry had zero to do with building the 90s teams, and things went downhill severely when he took full control.

So overall, as an owner, how does one grade the guy? I'm with you on the 2.

He has done the NFL some greatness, but I can't come close to saying the same for the Dallas Cowboys.

Agreed as a owner he has been overall great, but remember it's the owners job to hire quality competent football people then get of the way and let them do their jobs, so he gets a major fail there, AND that is being part of being the owner.

Today's Jerry...

A solid 9.

Could become a 10 if the team suddenly makes it to a Super Bowl...or at least an NFC Championship Game.

His sons have been there since day one , but were teenagers just hanging out like Spauding does now.
They had no real roles of responsibility until much later.
Nepotism has been a documented failure through several studies on the subject.
And really has Stephen's job performance given any of us a cause for confidence?

Agreed!
I did not even touch on the entertainment and entitlement culture issue.
VS a more football focused and accountability culture that more successful NFL teams have.

owner 10
gm 7
cap management 1

you average that out. i’ve got covid and don’t want too. but overall he’s great owner loves his players like family will over pay and screw the team because your now one of his kids. good at picking players can get overly invested in troubled people giving them a second and 3rd chance. if i was a player trying to get my life back in order i’d love playing for a owner like jerry even at the detriment of costing the team because uncle jerry will pay me to market the cowboys.
