Tex and Gil Brandt already had negotiations to have Jimmy Johnson replace Tom Landry. Jerry Jones just move the time table up one year.

The man (Jerry Dumbo GM Jones) gets a negative 10 or -10. He fired Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson, Bob Ackles, ran off Bill Parcells, ran off John Wooten, passed on Randy Moss, traded 3 no. 1 picks for one non Pro Bowl WR and a WR from a 0-16 team that the team was going to cut for the Hall of Fame WR Megatron to transform, let multiple players go to Super Bowl teams (see Ware, Hitchens, etc.) for free, and traded a 4 time Pro Bowl WR that led the team in regular season and playoff catches and TDs during his tenure in Arlington for a 5th round pick.

Was this a trick question?
No, wanted to see what the good folks on this board thought.
Thanks for chiming in.

Jerry did a great job his first 5 years, hired Jimmy , mostly stayed out of the way, signed players.
Did a great job.
Last 27 years has been in over his head with bad trades and bad drafts , hired the wrong HC's and then kept them too long (Garrett).
So looking at his whole body of work I would give him a 6 overall.
Mainly because of those 3 SB's wins.
PS: Hiring wrong front office personal like his son is also a major error.
You hire people because of their ability to get the job done, not just because they are your offspring.
This isn't the local grocery store.
Running a NFL Franchise is a complex operation.

Thoughts ?
He puts together a great roster....as a GM he is good in that regard.....he is very weak at hiring competent coaches that will crack the whip.....that's where the owner comes in....I think he a better GM than owner...

Jerry is so bad he won't even hire a decent coach. The Cowboys are run by a mom and pop business. The whole family works there. They can't compete with organizations where those people had to compete for their jobs.

That's really not a fair evaluation because he is in a very unique situation as both owner and de facto GM. Who else is in the same category that can be used in comparison? No one alive.

I would have to give him two separate scores.

As an owner I give him a 2. He deserves nothing better for his extremely poor choice of a GM as well as other important positions.

It is difficult to believe that Jerry Jones the owner scoured the countryside with countless interviews, investigative evaluations, and recommendations in order to find the best possible candidate for executive positions in the franchise while concluding that those valuable professionals were living under his roof the entire time.

Then there is the tenure of a GM that has won nothing in 26 years. How many other GM's would have survived a quarter of that time/ Zero! This is on the owner of that team.

It is not only his hiring failures that should be criticized as the owner but his betrayal to Cowboys fans in general.

His stadium was not built to feature the Dallas Cowboys and their longtime fans. it was structured to appeal as a neutral site that was more than inviting to opponent fans, a venue for non football related activities and a tourist attraction. During it's existence the Cowboys are ranked 2nd to last in difference between home record and away record. In other words, homefield advantage is a meaningless phrase

In addition, he has pushed the "regular Joe" fan out of the stadium as a regular attendee with the way he structures ticket selling and season passes. his strategy is corporate sales rather than to the individual fan.

As a GM, Jones scores slightly higher but not much. I will give him a 3.

As the GM jerry Jones has failed in just about every way an NFL GM can. His only real success are his ability to retain excellent evaluators in the scouting department and a few unique moves. I would say his high point was the acquisition of La'el Collins after he was not drafted.

However, despite superior talent Jerry has been unable to get the Cowboys to a conference championship game, much less a Super Bowl championship. In addition, he has used his GM position as a voice of authority in describing the state of the team in a way that increases sales in an obvious conflict of interest.

Jerry Jones the owner should have fired Jerry Jones the GM after the 1997 season, that team had no business going 6-10 only two seasons after winning it's 3rd Super Bowl in four years.

I could go on, in fact I could write a book but I will just conclude that the Cowboy have reached the point where, even if they do win one Super Bowl, they will just be satisfying the Law of Averages over that 27 year period. That tribute to mediocrity is on both the owner and the GM...

I'll give Jerry a 1 as an owner as punishment for picking himself as the GM ... o_O
As the GM, I'd give him a 1 for not knowing better as the owner! It's karma!!

4.

We have decent drafts. Decent coaching from time to time. Organization is screwed up. Lines of reporting is screwed up. Stepping all over coaches is screwed up. Second lowest playoff record over last 25 years is attricious.

Nepotism is just bad business period.
You don't get the most qualified person for the position.
We basically have amateurs running the front office which puts us at a competitive disadvantage
