What would have a healthy Romo done in 2016?

Being a huge Romo supporter, I have to say that there would be a catastrophic event to deny him the Lombardi. I’m not one to deny trends and historical context……something detrimental would have happened to prevent a Championship in Dallas during his tenure.

A HOLE that was there cause Dakko couldn't keep up and once again woke up in the 4th Q.
Now tell us this is not a usual occurrence with # 4???
When was the last time Dak was in a shoot-out game where both QB drive down and keep scoring???

…….happened 2 weeks ago playing Madden

And Stafford was a bum until he wasn't.

Dude was snake-bitten.

---only starting QB playing special teams in playoffs. Muffs snap. Nothing to do with him as QB. Drove team to winning FG as QB.
---throws apparent game-winning TD vs Giants, only to see Crayton stop his route
---throws a perfect ball to Dez. Who catches it inside 2 yard line....only to have it overturned. Was only incomplete pass entire 2nd half.

Those are three big playoff wins right there. or at least very possible wins.
Did his job on the final drive as QB in every one of them.

Not by those who knew QBs.
I'd say 90-95% of NFL players and coaches knew he was a stud.....as did the Rams, obviously.

Context, my friend. Those that KNEW football (not message board warriors) also knew Romo was fully capable of winning a SB as well. Same goes for Dak. All 3 of them are more than capable with the right circumstances. One of them just proved it.

Had Romo never gotten hurt in 2016, what would have the Cowboys done in 2016? A healthy Romo all season.

I dont think much changes. They probably dont go on an 11 game win streak like they did with Dak. Dak played well in the playoff game.

I don’t know but he damn well deserved the opportunity.

Also, the injury he suffered was completely a fluke and any other QB would’ve likely suffered the same injury if hit in the same manner. A previous post by a medical personality on this very site verified it.

Also, Tony throwing the game killing interception at the wrong time more than any other QB put into the same number or similar situations is another dumb myth, invented by the anti-Dallas Cowboys elements in the media and the fan base. Repeat a lie enough and emphasize it happening when it does and it becomes ingrained in memory as “truth”. It’s understandable from them. It’s not understandable from supposed Cowboys fans.

Who knows, but with Romo I think we beat GB. Although the refs did us dirty that game. Do we beat Atlanta? Possibly with a fresh running game with Zeke and vet savy Romo, we wouldve done some serious damage.

Years of grooming Alex Alarcon through the International Pathway Program pays off!

But seriously.....

I can't answer that but I hope it's someone that is already on the roster. Realistically, that's a really slim ho[pe

It may actually be Tyler Smith but I hope not.

I hope that if either starting tackles has to miss some games that they don't take Tyler out of his starting guard position and switch him to that tackle position. As you can see, the answer to this question will involve a lot of hope and not just by me.

Anyway, if their eventual answer is Tyler Smith, then the Cowboys have weakened two positions.

Tyler will be a future beast, I am sure of it, but would he be better at the tackle position this particular season than either starter? Also, you would have to replace him at Guard.....with who? Most likely McGovern. I think that essentially eliminates that scenario.

As far as the possibility being one of our most recent 3rd day draft picks, I shouldn't be Ball or Waletzko unless they turn out to be the absolute steal in their respective drafts, the 2nd coming of Rayfield Wright. Most likely, neither is even close to that and would spell real trouble to the point where it might effect the health of Dak Prescott. We don't need a "Chaz Green 2".

My guess is that they will wait to see how the young guys perform in the preseason and, if necessary, grab a veteran bargain at cut time.

A pretty unlikely scenario.

I don't know if he was completely healthy since the 2010 season. Many times after that, he was hailed for his grit and ability to play with pain. Then he got hurt again in 2015 and things got a lot worse. So, in the context of "healthy", those injuries effected him permanently, especially the most recent in 2015.

Therefore, the most realistic possibility would have been that Romo was healthy.....according to Jerry Jones.

So lets assume that he doesn't go down the first time he is hit. Here goes:

His mobility was gone by 2016. There were several occasions where Dak made a great play that involved a lot of running, plays that determined the outcome of the game, plays Romo couldn't make and shouldn't even try.

In addition, the offense would not have been as physical in the running game. This isn't really Romoi's fault, it's just a by-product of him being the starter instead of Dak.

You see, because Dak was an inexperienced rookie, the Cowboys had no choice but to place a heavy emphasis on the running game, which they should have, considering the RB and the O-line. Also, they placed an emphasis on ball security by instructing Dak to avoid risky throws. They limited their number of pass attempts, speeding up the clock and providing less time for opponent offenses. This turned out to be the perfect recipe for that 11 game winning streak.

Here is the big question:

Would the Cowboys young OC, Kellen Moore, be satisfied with a run heavy offense if he had Romo for each game? I think not. Moore is a disciple of Jason Garrett who would kill a running attack after the first 1 yard loss..

This would have halted the O-line's attack mentality that dominated defensive lines in 2016. Remember that was the year all three of those guys made 1st team All Pro. They were also excellent pass blockers but that wasn't the reason they were all recognized.as the best at each of their individual positions in the NFL

So the offense would have passed more. Romo would have had more freedom to make certain throws. He wouldn't always make them. There would be more turnovers which was Romo's trend during those times he did play in 2015.....4 starts.....7 INT's.

There would have been shorter, less time consuming drives which meant the opponent offense would have more time to bully a rather hapless defense at the time.

I don't think Romo could have inspired the team as much as the rookie duo of Zeke and Dak. It was a pretty special story.

They may have had a winning season, maybe. I don't think Romo would have matched or surpassed what the Cowboys did that season with their unlikely starter at QB, a rookie 4th round pick.

I'm not mad that they stuck with the hot hand,

This IS what bothers me about the decision because I know how many rookies have gotten to & won a SB. Since that number is zero, hot hand doesn't have the weight as if it were between two veterans.

Also, the cowboys had the opportunity to sub Romo in during the last 4 games (somewhere around 4 games that he had been cleared). They could have gotten him some playing time while not disrupting the flow of the team and at the very least had some actual info to make a decision for the playoffs. A good coach would have used those opportunities to prepare his team for a more sophisticated offense going into the playoffs. Leaving opponents with the added burden of not having much film on the team they were going to face.

But good coaching & organizational decision making hasn't been in vogue around here this century.

I wouldn't have been upset either way. It's one of the rare situations where, to me, whatever decision you make is okay to me.

You go with the veteran Romo, because of the experience and skill, but risk it messing up the flow of everything when were were rolling.

Or you stick with Dak, because everything seems to be working, but at the end of the day he's just a rookie and his numbers are basically below average in everything. Yeah, his numbers are great for a rookie QB, but compared to the rest of the NFL QBs he's average or below in a lot of important categories (TDs, yards, YPG).

Looking back they probably made the wrong decision. Because Dak was nothing but a bus driver, and if Zeke was slowed down we would need great QB play to keep advancing in the playoffs. Dak through 6 seasons has shown that he can't be that type of QB. That win streak was the worst thing that could've happened. Because had we lost a few games here and there the decision to go back to Romo would have been easier. I can't be THAT upset with it though, because Romo never done anything either and maybe a breath of fresh air was needed, but now we know Dak is Dak and isn't anything special.
