The confusion is they merged in 1966 but didn’t officially merge until the 1970 season so the Rams/Viking was an NFL championship game in 1969 even though Minnesota went on to lose the Super Bowl to KC.

The merger was announced on the evening of June 8, 1966. Under the merger agreement, the leagues maintained separate regular-season schedules for the next four seasons—from 1966 through 1969—and then officially merged before the 1970 season to form one league with two conferences.

Yep, me too on how the years are figured. Minnesota's first year as a team was 1961 and they havent won a SB ever, so that would be 61 years. The first SB was 1967 so that would be 55 years.

I guess its like you said, they must be using the1970 merger date as the start date for the Vikings.
Either that or they just made a mistake.

That is what they are trying to say and that is incorrect. They maintain the history of the Houston Oilers.

At the same time, the Houston Oilers were AFL champions the first two years of the leagues existence, with George Blanda at QB and Billy Cannon at RB. However, this was 1960 and 1961 before the merger. The correct year would be the first time they were eligible to win an NFL championship, 1970. This would put them at 53 years.

But they lost. I'd rather not play in the Super Bowl than play and lose.

The Cowboys had gone to championship games in every single decade up to the 90's until Bozo took over GM duties and now going on their third decade of futility. At this rate, I think the Mavs will win an NBA title before the Cowboys win another SB. Maybe even the Rangers will finally win a WS before doofus does. But hey, Dallas is the most valuable franchise in the world. Yeah, baby...... :yourock:

That's the problem. We as Cowboys fans are spoiled by having 5. Now everyone expects them to repeat when in fact there's teams that never even seen one. If it were that easy, every franchise would have a Lombardi.

I'm more frustrated that we haven't made an NFC Championship Game. I think that's more of a sign of being mediocre than not reaching Super Bowls. In that category, we're fifth. In the NFC, only two teams (Washington and Detroit) have gone longer without playing in a championship game.

That was the fourth and last time the NFL and AFL Champions played the game. The following year (1970) the two leagues merged. The leagues were renamed as conferences, reorganized (expansion, teams switching over) - resulting in a larger NFL.
Even though the Baltimore Colts and Minnesota Vikings lost to the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs respectfully, the Colts are recognized and in the record books as the 1968 NFL Champions, as are the Vikings the 1969 NFL Champions.
So the Minnesota NFL drought is 52 years - 1970 through the 2021 seasons.

I remember watching the game. We had/have family in Minnesota and gave them tons of crap when they lost.

One member of that Chiefs team was Warren McVea - a legendary Texas High School player with the San Antonio Brackenridge Mighty Eagles back in the 1960s.
